My junior year of high school the swim coach was my English teacher. I had study hall and lunch before his class. One time when he was late coming back from lunch I set the clock in the classroom five minutes ahead. He came in, looked at the clock, looked at his watch then back at the clock and then set his watch to the same time as the clock. I had a tape recording of the bell so five minutes before class should have ended I played the tape and got my class dismissed. I would have gotten away with it except for this one goody two shoes kid who didn't leave class and ratted me out. I got a week of on-campus suspension. At my high school graduation the principal pulled me aside and told me that that was the funniest thing any student had ever pulled on a teacher during his years as a principal.

The short of it: middle/high school is such a nasty place because adults don't know what to do with adolescents, and keep them there off the streets rather than educate them. So just like PRISONS, and among REAL HOUSEWIVES Bs, they're mean because there's nothing productive to do.
