I have been on a jag. Finally got the 1st 2 10cc albums on CD, and the Hotlegs comp, I didn't even know they put out a full-length.
Stop me before I buy the Neil Sedaka albums they played backup on.

I have been a fan of them since '76...

@cecile consider also that i expected a book reading, i was blown away. almost all the classic stuff you could ask for plus my favorites from her new album. and, she's funny. great time.

yeah, I saw her at a book reading and she ended up doing 5 songs!

Cecile, I never got a CD to replace my LP of that album because I fetishize that album cover. CD won't do. Is there even a decent remaster?
Avatar 12:26pm

Yes. Buy the UK version. It was also remasted for the VERY expensive UK box Tenology. It has Original Soundtrack, How Dare You, Deceptive Bends and Bloody Tourists.

Back from lunch in Central Park. Looks like I missed some goodies, especially early live Depeche Mode and Prince! (Can't wait for your premium.)
Avatar 1:56pm

I'm baffled by most remixes, it's like taking credit for someone else's song. If a great song gets better when you remix it, does the remix get better when you remix that?
Avatar 1:58pm
Cecile:

Rick, most of Hotlegs is great, and it's never for a moment not interesting. And they can SANG.
Avatar 1:58pm
Duane:

Well the Ron Hardy edits are signinficant because those were pretty much the foundation of House music

@Jennique - I am jealous of your ability to go outside for lunch. I am tethered to the phones here except on very rare occasions. Back when I worked in shipping/receiving, I ate my lunch in the park every nice day...took my shoes off and napped on a rock.
Avatar 2:00pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Ron Hardy!
Avatar 2:00pm
Cecile:

I can think of a bunch of songs that were better as remixes. Queen Latifah's Ladies First, the first Monie Love single, Madonna's Deeper and Deeper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm

Thanks for playing Ron Hardy, Duane. I've only read about him up to this point. It's great to hear.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm

It's the opposite here, Cecile. 80 and sunny. Very pleasant.
Avatar 2:06pm
Jennique:

If it makes you feel any better, I am beginning to get allergies and my head was thumping outside. Now it's thumping to Duane's beats.
Avatar 2:08pm
Droll:

I repeat _most_, not all, remixes baffle me. Once upon a time there was a creative and exploratory process associated with remixing that involved manual editing or beat juggling skills that required practice. Downloading a song onto your laptop then looping it and applying filter sweep is frankly pretty weak when compared to the great song being used.

Sunny in Seattle, supposed to hit 65F today! A scorcher!
Avatar 2:12pm
Cecile:

From my clumsy corn-weenie remix experience, I can attest it is really hard to do a great remix - even on a computer.

That is an art I have yet to master.

Cecile, If you think a remix on a laptop is hard, try being Prince and playing all the instruments on your songs. Prince earned adoration and respect I can never give to his remixers.
Avatar 2:17pm
Jennique:

My pet peeve about bad remixes is when they become more popular than the original and most young people don't know the original or care.
Avatar 2:18pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

I am just mad that things progressed beyond hitting rocks with sticks...
Avatar 2:19pm
Cecile:

I admire them for being collagists. It's not the same thing as being the original artist, but there is real skill and often genius there. It's just different and not entirely equal, which I'm sure the remixers would tell you themselves.

efd: while I have you on the line - have you ever explored a category of what I call "accidental songs"? Like Cheap Trick writing "Hello There" to test the crappy sound systems they had to play with in the early days. Or Hotlegs recording Neanderthal Man just to see how many drum tracks they could put on tape before their equipent overloaded. There have to be more out there.

@Cecile, that's an interesting category! Didn't realize the stories behind those songs... could make for a cool marathon premium if there are enough of them out there.
Avatar 2:44pm

Cecile: I think the most famous "Junk jam" that became a hit was Steam's _"Kiss him goodbye"..they did that in 1 night I think..the drum track was from another session..(that's why the drum rolls are off)
