Favoriting April 29, 2013: Radio Free Culture #12: App-Based Storytelling with Francesca Panetta

Tonight on WFMU's Radio Free Culture, multi award-winning producer and sound artist Francesca Panetta joins us to discuss Hackney Hear, the winner of this year's Prix Europa Radio Production Award. It's a smartphone app that asks you to put it in your pocket as you explore London Fields and Broacway Market in London. As you travel, the app scores your journey with a blend of location-specific interviews, archived audio, music, and poetry.

We'll discuss the future of app-based storytelling, the challenges of GPS accuracy, and learn how Franchesca pins two lapel mics to her left and right ears to capture a wide stereo sound.

Then, later in the show, listen back to this past year's Radiovision Festival, where Francesca spoke on a panel with Pejk Malinovski (East Village Poetry Walk) and Ellen Horne (RadioLab). The three super-producers will discuss how they're pushing the boundaries of audio with walking tours, immersive apps, and live events. Plus, the significance of taking risks and experimenting with new methods of storytelling. Jim Colgan (Soundcloud) moderates.

Hi Matt! Hi Fredericks! Unfortunately, Cage never came up. But if you're ever standing outside my apartment my wifi password is cage422. Hope that makes you feel better.

Hi Andrea!
So, atmospheric silence, with a few seconds trimmed off?? ;)

Matt from Springfield:

I'm guessing the Hackney app is like an audio tourguide that plays you stories based on the locations you walk to?

Andrea Silenzi:

ah, typo! cage433.
Avatar 6:22pm
Andrea Silenzi:

Yes, exactly like that. But it won big deal awards, and is more artsy and musical than just your average tour guide stuff.

You will all soon learn what a giant radio nerd I am. I am about to ask her what podcasts she likes!

Matt from Springfield:

@Andrea: Makes more sense. But, 4:22 would be somewhat original! ;)

Although I imagine the quality of similar apps would vary heavily, based on who's organizing it for an area--whether they seek out a variety of people with interesting stories like Hackney, or just upload the first stories they can find.
