Rev. TD: LOL puns...Would 'kerning' be the Left-Right space? This a nice font we got here - but lowercase C-L looks like 'd'...Would like to see FMU Comments get to where you could choose Fonts, use Emoticons & Post Graphix & other BrowserBustin' rubbish...

- Just watched PBS' 'There But for Fortune' about Phil Ochs again:
- The Creative temperament is prone enuff to the Manic-Depressive (yer either On or yer Off)
- never mind alloying it w/ a fiercely Political Temperament as well...

- & I think the Coltrane Quartet in early 60's had much to do w/ the kind of Jamming that would become de riguer for PsychRock - ? (Direct link - '8 Miles High' by Byrds - & people like 2/3rds of Cream - w/ an 'A' - came right oughta Jazz...)

- Giving Credit Where Due makes a difference...
Caryn:
Rule 2: If you directly borrow from someone else, be upfront about it. Don't e.g. change one note and claim that the melody is now completely original (I'm looking at you, Vanilla Ice).

And if money is owed, who gets to decide the amount and form of payment (credit or cash royalties)? I'm sure the record labels do not accept attention in lieu of payment, the SCotUS upheld a case against file-sharing music just yesterday.
Cecile:
I think they should just see samples like guitar picks or violin strings or guitars and figure out a way to ensure a steady, fair payment. Like when you buy photos from a photo service.
northguineahills:
Cecile:
and the SCoTus shouldn't be deciding about file sharing when their grandkids probably set up their "DVD machine" for them.
Droll:
I wish artists used their creativity to help teach their audiences how "downloading" and "borrowing" affect everyone.

And YES - I think I may give a impromptu speech in my class telling people to stop grabbing pics off the Internet w/o permission and get them from a cheap photo service. They don't have to go with Getty Images, but they need to realize that photographers are trying to make it, too.
We can't ask others to support our craft or art if we aren't willing to do it ourselves.
RevolutionRabbitNov63:
- It made point that Folk & Bop Traditions were always about Reinterpretting & Quoting - nothing new to Sampling @ all.
- A difference would be that then you still were Quoting - not actually Cutting & Pasting someone's stuff.
- *Then again* - Collage is perfectly Legit Art...It usually doesn't try to hide what it's doing though (on the contrary)...
- Been many cases of Musicians humming tunes to bewildered Judges trying to show Copyright infringement...long before Sampling...
- Funny how 'Record Label' seems like an outdated term!
- They kept CD's @ $16 & tried to stem the tide of changing technology - as if Popular Music & Technology could ever be seperated - pretty much until Steve Jobs took them ny their little hands & lead the way to them (the Corporate people).
- I maintain that History shows that if the means of Music Production - & the means of Music Consumption - are affordable & accessible - Artists make great stuff & People buy a lot of it - !
