Really digging this song Irene, thanks.

I gather not all FMU DJ's are raving extroverts, judging by last night's Hoof and Mouth performances. All pretty gutsy, though.

Hi everyone.
just read Jason Molina (of Magnolia Electric Co and Songs:Ohia) died. bummer pitchfork.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
Irene Trudel:

No, a lot of us are quite introverted... except when we're not. ;D

Thanks, by the way to everyone who made our Marathon fundraiser such a success. Love you all!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
Irene Trudel:

Oh, that's sad news, Yair! Maybe I'll have to play something by him. Do yo have a favorite?

Hi Sean, and everybody waking up late! I'm barely here, but floating on a nice musical cloud.

KP, nice to see you and the missus last night at the Hoof & Mouth performance.

We were very happy to see and especially hear you. MJM now has one foot firmly in the WUFMU field. but you know these uptown types.

I saw Flash. They sounded exactly like yes but with guitar as the mainstay instrument instad of keys.
Avatar 1:33pm
Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Ah, the jazziest of Yes.

Irene, thanks so much for paying tribute to Peter banks. He never got the credit he deserved. His work with his post-Yes band, Flash is excellent. RIP Peter Banks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm

Thanks Clay! I heard a few days ago and with all the Marathon hubub I wanted to make sure I mentioned Peter Banks' passing.

I'll always have a smidgen of respect for Yes because they covered this Byrds song.

Thanks for the Peter Banks -- he's the original Yes guitarist here, and died last week... Sad situation. Here's a message from the fansite "Notes from The Edge" last week, FWIW:

"Notes From the Edge
Nic Caciappo asked that we post the following regarding the state of Peter's remains, and how you can help. If you have any questions Nic advised to send him or George Mizer a message via Facebook. More updates as this develops. Thanks.

Friends of Yes & in particular Peter Banks. It has been since last Thursday Mar 7 that Peter passed away. He found at his home on Fri Mar 8. His body is still in the morgue and not being claimed because he has no family, and only an ex-wife who doesn't wish to assist. He may be cremated by the morgue and his belongings taken into custody by authorities. His ex needs to at least to tell the morgue that his friend(s) can take over. Then, they will want fees for cremation and delivery of his remains. Peter's belongings are still safe. But, there will be a need to sort this out with helping hands. "
  1:37pm
Clay Pigeon:

@KP, Banks has been called an "Architect of prog," and really formulated part of the Yes sound. If you want a complete Yes sound-a-like, see Starcastle.

Sean in Bristol, UK:

Great Yes track, Irene, a fitting tribute to Mr Banks. Hello Mr Pigeon

Very nice to be able to catch your show live for once, Irene. So pleased WFMU hit its marathon target - we get a bargain service whatever we pledge! (even if I'm not much of a Yes fan ;-) )

I suopose people know about the famous interview that Peter gave years ago about the early 90s Union tour, when he was invited by the group to play a show, but as Peter recounted in rather vivid detail Howe supposedly had him locked in his dressing room with a guard so he couldn't get on stage. Howe denies that, but we all know Yes is a mess, personnelwise.
  1:42pm
Clay Pigeon:

@KP - Starcastle's debut on Epic is really good. Kind of like the missing Yes album. but in a loving, fan-worshipy way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSZepYc219Y

Hey all, Congrats Irene. Clay ,glad you're here for some Prog support. Us types need to stick together 'round these parts! Of course Irene's show is a safe harbor for many of the things we love.

I wish we could all go on this Yes "Cruise to the Edge" with tons of great prog bands ... even Zebra! Though, no without Jon Anderson, it doesn't feel like Yes ---- http://cruisetotheedge.com/

G:

@Clay: FMU tie-in to Starcastle -- My college roommate did management work at WCBN (where Ken and others here also did college radio), and told me if I liked Yes I had to come to down to the station with him to listen to this new totally Yessy album. It was Starcastle, duh.

"Crusie To The Edge" sounds fun... until you consider spending a week aboard a ship with 5,000 prog rockers. If they did it in Vegas we'd have a deal.
Why no Starcastle reunion for that cruise? Their manager's asleep at the wheel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Irene Trudel:

Yeah, Tome, "Two Sides of Peter Banks" has long been a favorite of mine but does get a bit noodly, as in the track I played. Features Phil Collins on drums and Jan Akkerman (Focus) on 2nd guitar.
  1:53pm

I'll be listening, Irene! By the way, Flash (Colin Carter, Ray Bennett) are making a new record. Here's a rehearsal glimpse. ---- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDInU0FmCGM

Cool! Looking forward to a new disc. Always like Flash. It appears to be out in sometime in May.

I'd like to stowe away like Leonardo DeCaprio in Titanic on that Cruise to the Edge. Stand at the front of the ship with my arms outspread. Just to see Bozzio with UK and Zebra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
G:

@Clay: I'll wait for the ROIO's (boots) :)
Avatar 2:00pm

CP, I saw UK w/Bozzio last year. They've still got The Goods. Zebra is a band I never got to see live, can Randy still hit the high notes?
  2:02pm
Clay Pigeon:

@G - I'd iron Chris Squire's sweatpants for a boot of that tour.
@Droll - Randy can still hit those notes. --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXCubq-YxH0

This is all making me think that I'm 16 and in high school again. What a ghastly thought.
Avatar 2:06pm
Droll:

I'd iron Chris Squire's sweatpants...
Yep, that pretty much ended the conversation and the prog rock set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
G:

@Clay: There are recordings of virtually every Yes show out there since the mid 90s. (Only of some before then.) Trust me on this. I must have about 150 (?) myself.

There are always multiple digital recordings made by audience members since the late 90s, and people remaster them and whatnot. They sound practically like official releases. We checked with the band years ago, and they are ok with it as long as the heavy traders buy all official releases, and people just trade shows (no money). The band's even gotten old show recordings they didn't have from the trading community...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
Parq:

Gee, G, that's something. Who'd ever think that the Dead and Yes would have something in common?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm
G:

Yep lmao
Avatar 2:12pm

G, Fripp has sometimes officially released a live show to undermine a popular bootleg. I own at least one boot that became an official release decades later.

I like Rick Wakeman's Criminal Record. Especially "Birdman of Alcatraz" and "The Breathalyser."

Avatar 2:14pm

Great set, irene!
Avatar 2:14pm
Danne D:

@Droll (1:52) agreed - it's too scary of a journey to consider taking
  2:15pm
Ralphine:

That Yes cruise isn't on a Carnival boat, is it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
G:

@Droll: It's just another part of the great Prog Retirement Program :) That's what got Anderson booted, he didn't want to tour as heavily as Squire and Howe, while they still can...

About the USB idea -- traders tried to get them to do soundboards of the shows and sell them, but they are just oldschool and do not think along lines like that. They want their share of the gate and merch, that's what has always worked for them...
Avatar 2:16pm

@Ralphine - those cruise stories in the news add an even more horrifying dimension.
