Good morning to you, Duke! I'm afraid our young singer is too bashful (and too anonymous) to appear on today's programme.

I think jazz is a good barometer of understanding and appreciating multiple genres of music. If you don't get jazz, you won't get improv, avant-garde, noise or appreciate the song craft 'more structured' genres . Just my opinion.

Ohh, this is DJ Duane's relative, right? [not sure whether father, uncle or brother]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

Is that true (about Duane), kat330? I didn't know!
  11:34am jessie:

thanks hon -- my nose and I are dancing along at our desk
Avatar 11:34am kat330:

Matt will know for sure. :) Just waiting on his response.
Avatar 11:35am northguineahills:

Seeing Sam Rivers live was my gateway out of the indie rock ghetto. I'd had always been into classical music since I was a little kid.
Avatar 11:36am kat330:

I found it, Doug. Derrick's Duane's uncle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Matt from Springfield:

@kat,NGH: Classical/jazz are both mainly "intellectual" vs. "popular" genres today, but it depends too on whether the listener is more into structure or deconstruction/free form, and that would further separate which types of jazz they prefer.

I'm more into Classical and know about that. I like jazz and love the master "curating" Doug and other DJs here do to bring us great tracks--though I couldn't call myself a "jazz person".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

Happy Birthday to you and your nose, Jessie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Matt from Springfield:

@kat: You broke the news to me this time! That's awesome, Duane's uncle is pretty great!
  11:39am Paul Sherratt:

Happy Birthday from all north of Watford and on behalf of those in Watford too..

Avatar 11:39am kat330:

@Matt: Find a track on one of Duane's playlists after Thanksgiving 2012 where he recorded the Harriott family sing-along. It was sublime harmonizing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Matt from Springfield:

Of course they would all come through--hearing that it's for Jessie's birthday! :)
HBD once again!
Avatar 11:40am kat330:

@Paul: TY for that adorable animation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

I love the ears on that kitty, Paul Sherratt!
Avatar 11:43am northguineahills:

I remember Duane talking about Derrick Harriot a while back.
Avatar 11:44am kat330:

@Doug: Yes, they appear to be acting as ailerons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Thanks for the rec!
Anthropologists have found that families really do sing together better than with non-relatives. Explains all the great "Family" vocal groups from country, folk, doo wop, soul to the present.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

Now I've never figured out if Derrick Harriott (and thus Duane) is related the genius Jamaican sax player Joe Harriott. (One of my all-time faves.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

Doesn't Sachiko sound like Laura Nyro on this track?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Jeff Golick:

not to rain on this parade, but was just alerted to this: www.citypress.co.za...
Avatar 11:45am kat330:

@Matt: wfmu.org... The 3rd track from the end of that show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: YES!
Can't remember if other commenters have compared Sachiko to Ms. Nyro before, but I remember a favorable comparison someone made to some Western singer on a playlist before.
Avatar 11:47am kat330:

@Matt: My fondest childhood memories were Thanksgiving at my maternal grandparents' home when my uncle played guitar and we all sang in at least 3-part harmony, occasionally 4-part. :)
Avatar 11:49am kat330:

@ngh: Yeah, me too, and rather recently either earlier this month or late January. But the Harriott name stuck out because of that family at T-giving track. My family sure never sounded that swell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Jeff Golick,
Any sneak previews for your upcoming D:O RADIO on Monday (noon-3pm, right here on Give the Drummer Radio!)?

Occasionally Harmonious Families
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Matt from Springfield:

Ah, that would be myself! I called her "the Japanese Joni [Mitchell]" after "Running Away on a Road of Snow" was played on Surface Noise:
wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:52am kat330:

Oh, Fabio played a track off this I believe. It's lovely! And what pranksters at the label to name it that "pray" on words.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Doug Schulkind:

You only quote the really smart listeners, Matt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Matt from Springfield:

@Artie,kat: So nice to bring out an occasional harmony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Smart listener you are! :) You know that I have quoted yourself before, then? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

Artie!
Avatar 11:54am kat330:

Our on-rare occasion harmonious family lacked most all the soul the Harriott family demonstrates. But then we were singing such "standards" as "Whispering Hope," "I've Got a Mansion Just Over the Hilltop," etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Jeff Golick:

Threadgill...Butch Morris...Braxron...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Jeff Golick:

Braxton!
Avatar 11:55am glenn:

pass this on to mrs. drummer some, please doug. www.youtube.com...
Avatar 11:58am kat330:

Actually it was that very same Fujii & Fumica track: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

I will copy all good birthday wishes and links into an email for Jessie and send.

@Jeff Golick
Braxron is "Braxton" as back-announced by Scooby-Do.
Avatar 12:00pm kat330:

Matt goes around requoting himself unawares, and now I go around favoriting a track I already favored, just in a different incarnation. ;)

Avatar 12:01pm kat330:

GREAT show, Doug! I'll catch the earlier sets in the archives. Have a great birthday weekend!

Bye everybody -- be safe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm gonna quote Matt about you favoriting your favorites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: The more favoriting/quoting, the merrier!
Avatar 12:02pm Shaun:

Scrappy-Do would only listen to Wynton-approved tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for another great episode Doug!
Have an enjoyable weekend, everyone!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: SMOASP, house band of KITH. Enjoyed their surf rock sound!
