The word "legend" gets tossed around a lot, but few people are as deserving of this label and yet as unheralded as the brilliant songwriter/producer John Carter. The man sang backing vocals on "I Can't Explain," and co-wrote "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat," "Little Bit O' Soul," and "My World Fell Down" (to name just three). He also enjoyed success with the bands The Ivy League, The Flowerpot Men, and perhaps most notably with The First Class, whose hit "Beach Baby" -- co-written and produced by Carter, with frequent collaborator Tony Burrows on lead vocals -- is an unassailable pop classic. John Carter is also responsible for my favorite summer song of all-time, "Sound Of Summer" by Starbreaker. Listen to the archive and hear how all of this happened from the man himself, along with heaping helpings of music from throughout his career!

scratches give it character, i still hear the music --

and someone could take this as a music file and clean it right up these days, if they want clean. we "tapetraders" have done that with more shitty sounding 60s-70s concert cassettes than you can shake a stick at
  9:16pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD, you playing the Troggs tapes in memory of Reg Presley tonight?

I think I've made mistakes relative to the John Carter/Tony Burrows lineups of the Ivy League in the past. Living and learning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
efd:

That's understandable! There was a lot of shifting going on, not to mention the fact that John preferred not to tour so before Tony Burrows officially joined the Ivy League (after John left) he was performing the songs on the road.

Forgive me for tooting my own French horn here: www.spinner.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
efd:

ooh, very nice Gaylord! I'll look forward to reading that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Uncle Michael:

@Julie I really felt that Journey's End was a Moodies simulacrum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Gaylord Fields:

@efd: I'm so inspired by this incredible show that I'm actually making reference to my life outside WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
efd:

AND you gave yourself an avatar! I will be taking full credit for all of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
efd:

also, thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
G:

I remember that darn Brit Cal ad, if it was broadcast in UK only that must have been 72-74 somewhere
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Uncle Michael:

This is why I come to WFMU/Ichiban/GTDR. I can actually learn cool stuff here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
efd:

yeah, that would have been the timeframe G.
Avatar 11:29pm
Holly in NC:

@G - nice link - & sadly true.
I have found a still-warm squirrel leg (one, hind) in my attic.
I have left the house to allow nature (read cats) deal with a hapless, fatally wounded bird, getting only regurgitated beak & claws back next day.
And many vole lips on my doorstep.

When these beasties pass I think I'll keep all future cats inside only.

Julie:

HAHA Gaylord has a life outside WFMU?
Avatar 11:30pm
Holly in NC:

@Gaylord - that's a great article, thnx for link!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Uncle Michael:

We've Only Just Begun...Williams & Nichols did the commercial to hit record thing too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
G:

Dare I hazard a hypothesis: Even better than JERRY MUTHAF*@%ING SHIRLEY!!! (April 2011)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
efd:

oh yeah, good one Uncle Michael! I think that started out as a bank ad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Uncle Michael:

Correct, efd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
efd:

Oh my gosh, thanks G! I wish I could have done as much post-production on the Jerry Shirley interview, but I recorded that one the night before my show so there just wasn't any time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
G:

Both great, this even better :)
Avatar 11:33pm

As I said on Facebook, it's an hour and 36 minutes of foreplay leading up to a "Sound Of Summer" orgasm.
Avatar 11:36pm

I just want to relisten to the ~minute leading up to efd's orgasm. Girls come first ;-)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
efd:

They're the Hungarian Abba.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
G:

@Julie: They wish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Uncle Michael:

I like Carter's slightly crass, Tin Pan Alley approach to trying to make hits. It's so filled with guile that it's guileless. It harkens back to before the dreaded concept of "cred" infiltrated pop music. Long live *craft*.
  Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
12539:

Döbbenetes! (Google translate tells me that's Hungarian for "awesome")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Holly: Aw shucks -- thanks!
@Julie: To quote Archie Campbell -- pfffffffft!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm

He is an unabashed pop songwriter.

daveB from Oakland:

holy moly ... they sure do sound like abba.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Uncle Michael:

But he doesn't seem to confuse sales success with creative success. He doesn't disavow something as "bad" just because it didn't sell. I think of that as Gibb Syndrome.
  11:44pm
Ryan Braun:

Dude awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm

Very nicely done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm

You really cooked my noodle with The Other Ones! I instantly remembered Jayney Klimek from Tony Banks' solo album, but totally forgot about this single. It took me almost the entire song to remember/figure it out -- that was a trip!
