Billy Jam:

First up a moment of silence for those victims of this morning's senseless mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Conn. - the latest in a seemingly never ending stream of senseless mass shootings in this country. When will it all end? When guns are not so readily available - i.e. never, unfortunately. In a sad coincidence Charizma (pictured left in photo at top of playlist - one of the many guests on the Feb 1993 KUSF show being featured in this flashback edition of PTNOTR) was himself victim of senseless gun violence. Less than ten months after this KUSF radio interview photo was taken (by Timi D…) Charles Hicks (aka Charizma) was tragically shot and killed on the streets of the South Bay while sitting in his car - another victim of senseless gun violence. He was 20 years of age. Consequently he never made it back to KUSF for that second interview we had planned on having with him. Nor did Hollywood Basic (who had signed him) ever release his album. In fact that was one of the reasons why his producer/friend Peanut Butter Wolf (pictured center in photo at KUSF) went on to set up his own label, Stones Throw Records, so that he could years later release Charizma's music. Today's "flashback" show features many other guests on that radio show from almost 20 years ago in February 1993 I did on KUSF during the (radio industry magazine) Gavin Convention - a time when record companies would bring artists to San Francisco to perform at showcases and do radio spots like this one. In addition to Charizma and PBW, for this one 3 hour KUSF show my guests included Masta Ace, Diamond D, The Pharcyde, Da King & I, Y'all So Stupid, Funkdoobiest, Nasty Nas, Freestyle Fellowship, and The Goats. On this edited down WFMU flashback show I include interviews with all but the latter four acts (they were on tape one of the two 90 minute tapes of the show I recently uncovered. Note that the original tape with the Pharcyde cut off/cut short their interview - hence why it ends abruptly - sorry). In the house at the time as well as the guests were producer KC, photographer Timi D…, and friend of the show Big O from Master P's The Real Untouchables (aka TRU) outta Richmond.
