A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

he's not as versed in art history as he thinks - I believe that Southerners black and white made junk sculptures long before there was a Kurt Schwitters. And I can see some people being threatened by solidarity - women artists get this all the time. At least he was honest about it. I felt it was an honest statement.

And if you want to rag on "black artist copying white artists" techno came from Kraftwerk. And nobody questions it as a valid expression of African-American art.

would you have a different reaction?
Some politically-charged art is like that.
I didn't think anything I saw in the article or just Googling around made me feel that way, but maybe Mr. Johnson is kind of insecure.

and maybe not every expression of identity is akin to Mary Daly kicking guys out of her religion class. But a lot of people are like that. Too many, maybe.

Great interview, love it:
"Also, most writing about art these days is so bad that my secular readership has disappeared. Nobody but professionals and grad students even look at it. So no more e-mails from civilians, no more notes from John Updike or Steve Martin, no more crazy hipsters from Berkeley knocking on my door."
