a live set from Balboa! Wilco's Mikael Jorgensen and tech genius Travis Thatcher fill WFMU's Love Room with an ungodly array of vintage, modern and homemade synths, sequencers, filters, triggers, drum machines, and patchbays, and they do it with style, sensitivity and major know-how. From EMS-synthis to iPad apps, it's 1971 meets 2012 and a thrilling master class in electronic music history in between. All songs are from their forthcoming release "Songs For Sexting", and the titles are indeed ACTUAL SEXTS! See if you can decipher them.

Matt from Springfield:

Let's get it ON! I'm in the Moog!
  3:07pm
BSI:

ah! That lovely Tonto sound... I can see this show may hurt in the best possible way. Discarding crash helmet...

Hi guys !
I'm right in the middle of a battlefield (my room) and this couldn't be more appropriate.

Hi Scotty, hi folkies. Excellent musical topic for today!
  3:24pm
Cheri Pi:

Hey you!
  3:24pm
Chris from DC:

Yes!
  3:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, interesting Silver Apples!
This song almost sounds like a Jesus & Mary Chain, with synth pulses instead of guitar feedback.
  3:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oh, bonjour pierre! Bonsoir, rather.
  3:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Good ol' square waves! It's hip to be square.

The last time I bought video game tokens, I was playing Defender.

BSI:

Still wrapping my brain around that zombi double LP (spirit animal) after Steve Moore played a solo set down here - it's a beastly wonder of an album, gawd...
  3:41pm
J:

Gear Curious. Is that an ARP 2600 in the back? Identify the rest, please. From left to right: Boss xxx?, Moog xxx?, xxx?, xxx?(below), Akai APC 20, XXX?
  3:43pm
Thomas Edison from West Orange:

The music from Gelbart reminded me of Scary Monsters by David Bowie. I had to look it up so see who was first... Seems Gelbart is more current so I guess his influence was Bowie.
  3:44pm
BSI:

well that's a Critter & Guitari "pocket piano" foreground-left (behind iPhone), a very fun little thing. Desperately interested in that pegboard synth dealie to the right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
Scott W:

J, yes indeed it is an ARP panel; and what BSI said re: the pocket piano. The battleship grib dealio is the world famous EMS Synthi-A!
  3:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

NOOOOOOO!!! IT'S A SINNNNNNNN! IT'S A SINNNNNNNNNNN!!!!
  3:50pm
BSI:

ah, of course. The Synthi-A, which made the between-song segues in Space Ritual so..... god-blessed wonderful...
  3:51pm
Ken the Scientist:

Yes.
  3:53pm
Chris from DC:

The glorious ninth.
  3:53pm
Carmichael:

Just above the Guitari device is a standard floor unit "stomp box" normally used by guitarists. I'm guessing its for adding effects to the button piano.

this man lies! that wasn't an ARP, it was a Lowrey organ
  3:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ah, this was a Baba O'ARP.
  3:56pm
Carmichael:

I'm just now reading Townshend's biography Who I Am. He describes Baba O'Riley in great synth detail.
  3:56pm
J:

Ha, Ha! ARP promotional 7"! That was a good one! I guess the moog is a Moogerfooger 12 stage phaser, comparing the pic with their website.

ah, I gotta get that Townshend book...
  3:59pm

I always thought the organ in question on "Baba O'Riley" is the Lowrey TLO-K, just like the one I learned on in the 70s and 80s.

Another great synth tune is "Charm" by Tony Banks, but I am waaay biased - I bought all his solo albums.
  4:04pm
Refuse to Google It:

Roger Powell ... hmm. Wasn't he in Utopia?
  4:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

Cool, "Baba O'Riley" was a Lowry organ--"treated" or processed I suppose with an ARP.
  4:06pm
Carmichael:

According to Townshend, he used a Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 organ using its marimba repeat feature.
  4:08pm
Carmichael:

More from Townshend: "I used gated Lowrey organ via EMS VCS3 gated filter. No sequencer. I got my ARP 2500 system (huge) just after I’d recorded the first few demos for Who’s Next. Baba O’Riley was a cheat. I couldn’t get the sequencers and mix-sequencers on the ARP under my fingers fast enough so I emulated sequencing and tape delays using the Marimba Arpeggiator effect on my Lowrey Berkshire."

Many thanks for the clarification, Carmichael. My TLO-K looks even less valuable now...

Hey Pidge! Oy, I'd sure love to see some pledgey love rolling in now. Hey C#, that 1st rig was Mikael's. The one illustrating PIR is Travis's (joined by Actual Travis!). I used to have an ARP Odyssey. It was broken, in fabulous ways. Also used to have a Synthi-A, and a Micro-moog, and a Moog Source. Ohhhhhh...... all usedtabees.

I have a $5 yard-sale mini-synth with a sampler you scream into. Luv it! This is stuff, Scott. I hope people realize how hard it is to organize bringing artists like Balboa into FMU with all the elaborate, sensitive gear. You've gone above and beyond for this. On a side note ... wonder what the first use of synth was in pop? Dick Hyman? Here Comes The Sun? Daily/Nightly Monkees? Fascinating. Listening in Roxbury, NY.
  4:22pm
Pigeon:

*good stuff
  4:22pm

  4:28pm

Thanks for the reply, Scott. Ah, the "usedtabees"... I never had an ARP, but sometimes I miss my Sequential Circuits SixTrak, my Realistic brand Minimoog knockoff, my Magnus organ, and the days when all the keys and switches on my Lowrey worked. The TLO-K is pretty much just used for bass pedals now, and most of my synths are software these days, but I keep an SY-77 and a SPD-20 around for input.

An aside that I must get off my chest - it just isn't fair that a TG-77 lacks a disk drive.
