Favoriting October 24, 2012: GAP DREAM live set! (31 Days Of October Silent Fundraiser ,week 4)

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Gap Dream started out as a bedroom psych project by Cleveland's Gabe Fulvimar, and after sending some of his homemade recordings to Burger Records they released a cassette-only album, as they are wont to do, at the beginning of this year. Fans of airy psych-pop that sounds something like Brian Jonestown Massacre meets The Byrds, with elements of Spacemen 3 and Sweden's Dungen thrown in, will absolutely not want to miss this live set! Gap Dream's album is now available on LP (Burger), and they've got a new single out on the Suicide Squeeze label. Don't miss this live set, and check them out on Twitter and Facebook!

This special show is part of the WFMU's 31 Days Of October silent fundraiser -- we're giving you a full month of special shows instead of interrupting our on-air programming for a second time this year, but we really need your support to help keep us on the air.

Listener comments!

  9:04pm
Danne D:

Hiya Funk Fans.
Hi EFD :) looking forward to a great show
  9:05pm
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Hey Danne!

Hello EFD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
efd:

Hi Danne, hi BadGuyZero, hi everyone else!
  9:08pm
john:

Hey Evan and folks....the best thing of all about tonight's show is that it drowns out the execrable McCarver (and even execrabler) Buck. Odd part is that we're three innings in and I'm still not sure who I'm rooting for. Go team!
  9:10pm
SteveL:

Hey there. Was there a recent cover of They Walk Among You, (or was this the song I've heard.?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
efd:

hey john! Honestly I'm not sure who I'm rooting for either!

@SteveL, New Math later changed their name to Jet Black Berries and I think they re-recorded the song -- and in fact I think they recorded it again for a new CD they put out last year. So, kind of!
  9:16pm
Danne D:

EFD with the wonderful channel-switch b/w songs :) One song ends in the right ear and the next one starts in the left :)
  9:16pm
PB:

Verlander getting rocked.
  9:17pm
john:

Nice call, Danne! Those of you who are quadraphonic are, however, screwed. Not to mention stuck in 1975.
  9:17pm
SteveL:

Ahhhh, that makes a bunch of sense. Cool to have two versions out.

So, you're warming us up for Gap Dream eh? This is what awesome radio is about!
  9:18pm
G:

Contrary to the cliche, good hitting beats good pitching tonight. 4 runs in 2-2/3 innings on Verlander, bullpen up.
  9:19pm
SteveL:

Danne D: I'm going to listen with the headphones more in the future. I'm on a small computer speaker, that I can take about anywhere, but I'm missing out on the channel-switch nuance.
  9:20pm
john:

If you've scored four runs in less than three innings, the pitching isn't good.
  9:21pm
G:

Verlander has a pretty extensive track record of good pitching this year. Don't take my word, check the stats :)
  9:21pm
PB:

Big question is whether Zito can hold the lead.
  9:22pm
PB:

Brian Jonestown Massacre meets The Byrds, with elements of Spacemen 3. Sounds pretty interesting efd, will have to check these guys out.
  9:23pm
john:

Well, let's see if the Giants will accept his track record in lieu of how he's throwing tonight. I'm betting the under...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
efd:

PB, they are G R E A T !! And good evening to you and to G as well,
  9:25pm
G:

Apparently they weren't intimidated by the track record, that's a fact.
  9:26pm
Danne D:

This article didn't help much.
http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/10/24/how-to-decide-who-to-root-for-in-the-world-series/

I think I'm going against the fan base that had a huge blind sport for Bonds rather than the team that beat the Padres in '84 (my rooting history is unfortunately complicated in baseball)
  9:28pm
SteveL:

Enjoying the dual musical/baseball threads. I believe that's one of the reasons this radio is Worth Paying For.

55% for now.
  9:29pm
Danne D:

Now it's Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime for the FUNK!
  9:30pm
SteveL:

"Crippled Monkeys" on Ed Sullivan? THAT was a night to remember. That Tommy James/Shondells was nice.

Time for the Funk indeed, sir.
  9:30pm
Danne D:

Holy Crap is EFD posting pictures of a performance from the Future?!?
  9:30pm
john:

Apparently complicated indeed, Danne! I sort of give Giants fans a pass on the Bonds blind spot; I think pretty much every team's fans would do the same thing for their hero, especially when he was hardly the only juiceman in the bigs.
  9:32pm
SteveL:

So, if the band photos are from the future, does that mean we know how the ballgame came out?
  9:34pm
PB:

What is a shondell?
  9:35pm
Danne D:

He also wasn't the only doucheman in the bigs, but he was pretty high on the list, John.
  9:36pm
Danne D:

@SteveL - EFD probably knows but he ain't tellin
  9:36pm
G:

Band to roadie: "As usual, have five nice shondells lined up for us by the stage door waiting, twenty minutes after the second encore ends."
  9:37pm
Devil's Advocate:

Burgers...
  9:39pm
PB:

Verlmader just gave up an RBI single to Zito. Oh my.
  9:39pm
john:

Point well taken, Danne. That being said, weird story. I was in Palo Alto in 2001 recovering from surgery, and one of my nurses, it turned out, was a friend of Barry Bonds' mother, who apparently had a bunch of buddies, or perhaps biddies, over to play cards a couple times a week. Barry would often stop by and was, apparently, a very friendly and most respectful and dutiful son. Interesting thing, perspective.
  9:40pm
Alex & Roger:

Juice? Huh?
  9:41pm
PB:

Should say Verlander. Typing in the dark.
  9:41pm
G:

Once the dam breaks, it damn well breaks. Psychology, I guess.
  9:43pm
G:

Stat: Verlander has thrown 35 "2 strike count" pitches already. Those Giant batters are not going down easy. Duh.
  9:45pm
G:

The Yankee $275-million lineup (aka the Antiques Road Show) would have struck out nine times already
  9:47pm
PB:

Sound a little like Apache Dropout to me. Good stuff. Always up for great garage rock.
  9:47pm
john:

G, they're probably waving in front of the TV.
  9:49pm
G:

Verlander out, his shortest start since June 2010.

@john: Their kids are probably striking them out in the back yard these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
efd:

I have to say, I'm surprised about Verlander. I'd thought the extra days off would have been good for him. The Giants make contact, though, more so than the Yankees or A's.
  9:52pm
Danne D:

At least Barry's not a douche to his mom and her friends - we need intel on the other 49 players now ;)
  9:54pm
john:

Well, we're still waiting for Verlander's first actually good World Series start. Got rocked in his first, gave up a ton of baserunners in his second and squirmed out with a couple unearned runs. Fortuantely, as a sort of statistican, I can say a sample of three is still a bit on the short side.
  9:55pm
john:

@G: grandkids, surely?
  9:55pm
G:

@john: Zing! :)
  9:56pm
Thierry:

Hi efd & everyone! Just tuning in. This band sounds great. Did you discover them during your 'scouting' trip in the rust belt a few months back? Also, I'm still missing baseball so much!
  9:57pm
Chop Scott:

Excellent engineering work Mike Sin! Sounds great...
  9:58pm
john:

Just call Panda Señor Octubre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
efd:

Thanks again for tuning in, everyone!

If I may interrupt the baseball chat with a different sort of pitch, I'd just like to remind you that WFMU's Silent Fundraiser has just one week left, and I've still got a ways to go to reach my goal.

If you can, please pledge to support my show and WFMU's Silent Fundraiser by using the pledge box at the top of the page! We're not interrupting our programming a second time, but we DO need your support. Thanks! And thanks especially to everyone who's already pledged!

3rd homer of the game for Pablo in 3 ABs, it's getting brutal for the Kitties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
efd:

Hi Thierry! Good question, and not too far off! A friend who lives out there slipped me a digital version of their LP way back at the beginning of the year, and I was instantly smitten.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm
efd:

What's the score?
  10:00pm
G:

6-0
  10:01pm

this band is good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm
efd:

Someone just called to ask what the song was that I played two songs ago, before Magnetic Fields.
  10:03pm
john:

Maybe the best live set I've heard in the several decades I've been listening to the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
efd:

I don't think he was listening to WFMU.
  10:04pm
Devil's Advocate:

Lot's of good bands out here lately... Hozac, Trouble in Mind, and Drag City seem to be finding good people. Puffy Areolas from Cleveland, in particular
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
efd:

john, good to know I wasn't overselling it! These guys are so great!
  10:08pm
Danne D:

whoa, G, you mean Pablo did the Reggie? was it the full Reggie (i.e. 3 straight pitches)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
efd:

"I don't want to keep you too long" is your clue that the interview is going to be even longer than usual.
  10:09pm
SteveL:

Hell of a good band. Mike Sin is a GREAT producer. really sounded great.
  10:09pm
Danne D:

amazing this is Pablo could get 2 more at bats!
  10:10pm
G:

@DD: Yes, and how many ABs does he have left? Hids 3rd HR was in the fifth. Only Ruth (twice), Jackson, and Pujols have hit three in a postseason game...
  10:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Evan Funk Davies, take me AWAYYYY!!!
Hi Evan and all Funk Fans!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
efd:

Hey MfS! Thanks for stopping by!
  10:13pm
Danne D:

Pablo is getting at least one more.
They have 9 outs left and he's 7th (and thus 16th) in the lineup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
efd:

Let's see if we can get that pledge meter over the 60% hump (and beyond!) during the show! Please make a pledge if you can! Thank you :)
  10:15pm
G:

If the Giants score enough more runs, he could get two or even three. But we'll see. Cabrera just batted in the first Tiger run.
  10:15pm
Devil's Advocate:

Couldn't make the Burlington Bar tonight, so thanks for this.

Hola, question! :)
@Danne: Yes, I did see that ad, but wasn't thinking of it at the Arby's mention! I do like how the Daily Show used to have interviews with Bo Dietl, and so much of it was always bleeped as Bo went on in a typical New Yorker fashion! :)

Shoes ... from Zion, IL, I think. Or maybe Rockford, like Cheap Trick. Off Broadway ... Pezband ... what a wonderful power pop heritage Illinois has given us.

G, It may be spelled "Ticket Salad Sandwich", but EFD is definitely pronouncing the Canadian way (Le Pweson Rooj).
  11:16pm
Mrs. Horn:

Trevor Horn. Now THERE was a bitch magnet. {sigh}

Red Fish:

What the hell is so funny. ;)

This one goes out to Joe McGasko, for his "Do the 45" premium! And Singles Going Steady and his "Single File" segment in general!

Holly in NC:

Sharpees! Thanks to Peter Guralnick's exhaustive & pre-internet index in the superb Sweet Soul Music, I spent years tracking down that 7". Now it's just a click away (think Mick now: oooh, children, it's just a click away, click away) Julie if you're here think Andrew Eldritch! ;-)

Subsonics. Great.

Thanks to Henry in California and the comments board's own bbob for getting me a little closer to my goal for this month's Silent Fundraiser! Greatly appreciated!

Can we get to 70% by midnight? It's up to you!

Glen Burtnick's daughter was for several years in a super-fun art-punk-facepaint band from New Brunswick called We Are The Seahorses.
  11:34pm
Cynthia:

Burtnik is in Liverpool now, and is great. That cancels out the Styx!
  11:40pm
Cynthia:

holly in nyc, you do realize Maxwell's is right across the river in Hoboken, I'm sure? Lots of lucky NYC people make it there regularly! Come on out! And don't miss Holmes ( i'm shameless) or Wyldlife (they're great).
  11:41pm
Red Fish:

That's Holly in NC, as in south of Virginia ;)

Hey, Cynthia! Thanks for the Glen Burtnick update!

Also, Holly is in NC, not NYC. :)

Bruce Campbell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm

Different Bruce Campbell! But interesting coincidence.
  11:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

I would pay top $ to see a 2 hour, full length Broadway version of that Jobriath rock opera!
  11:42pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Cynthia - while born & raised in southern Connecticut (not the nasty commuter trail I hasten to add) I now hang my hat in the fine state of North Carolina, which is a bit of a drive :-)
  11:44pm
john:

Nasty CT commuter trail represent!
  11:44pm
Rickwaukee:

how 'bout a lozenge instead?
  11:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah, this is the Jobriath EFD did a show on: "Jobriath (Bruce Wayne Campbell December 14, 1946, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – August 3, 1983), was an American country rock and glam rock musician and actor.[1] He was the first openly gay rock musician to be signed to a major record label, and one of the first internationally famous musicians to die of AIDS."
  11:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

And HI Julie!
  11:44pm
Holly in NC:

I need the Jobriath medley!
  11:48pm
Holly in NC:

Hi John! I guess my hometown is now part of that nasty ole trail, but it surely wasn't back in the day. My trailer-sized house (with an amazing yard) -and in fact my entire block - was razed some years back to build some NASTY "executive condos".

just joined post baseball
EFD--there's a misspelling in the playlist--Glen spells his name Burtnik
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
efd:

Michael, it's funny you mention that - it's spelled "Burtnick" on my single, but I noticed in his Wikipedia entry that he's used both spellings during his career.

Holly in NC:

ZZ Top repping with perhaps the best cover ever!!!
  11:51pm
john:

Nasty executive condos repre--oh, wait. Holly, unfortunately, I know exactly what you're talking about!
  11:51pm
Droll:

Ha! As Hot Lunch Was playing I was thinking about how the only thing that could make it sound better would be the ZZ Top "Bass On Top" mix, and BAM! There's a perfect example!
  11:53pm
Red Fish:

this ZZ Top is the official Silent Fundraiser track.
  11:53pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--he currently uses Burtnik and I'm trying to remember what he used when Heroes and Zeros was released here but I can't remember (but I think it was without the C)

@Red Fish, yes indeed! Thanks so much to everyone who's pledged - I really appreciate it! I'd love to see that pledge meter move just a little further tonight if possible!

Fantastical jams, Evan! Thanks!
Everyone have a good night!

Oooooh...we'll miss you Holly! Great show as usual, Evan!
