Favoriting October 10, 2012: LP Mayhem In The PM: 3 hours of power-pop, post-punk, new wave and punk from 1978-1982! (31 Days Of October Silent Fundraiser, week 2)

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Tonight it's another one of my "Mayhem" shows, where I return to my college radio roots and play nothing but power-pop, post-punk, new wave and punk from 1978-1982. The last few years I've done this during WFMU's Singles Going Steady week, so I'm turning the tables this time and playing nothing but LPs!

It's part of the station's 31 Days Of October silent fundraiser -- we're giving you a full month of special shows instead of interrupting our on-air programming for a second time this year, but we really need your support to help keep us on the air.

P-U-M-P-E-D for this evenings show!
  9:04pm
Mike East:

I'm here!
  9:05pm
will:

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that this is the greatest punk song ever written.
  9:05pm
SteveL:

I like Ready Steady Go better every time I hear it. I'm pretty stoked. I already have a feeling I'm going to be hitting this show a lot in the archives.
  9:06pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

How do you go from the splendor of Ready, Steady to the dreck of White Weddin'?
  9:06pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Evan & friends! I know this show is going to be stellar. Sad can't tune in 'til ~ 10:30. Y'all have fun in the meantime.
  9:06pm
john:

Please tell me these guys are from Pixburgh.
  9:07pm
Danne D:

Hi Funk Fans :)
Hi EFD :)

  9:07pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

The jags? Wowzers i'm ancient.
  9:09pm

Hi Evan and familiar names! Sounds like a great upcoming show to be back.
  9:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

EFD! Tonight's "Mayhem" show sounds extremely promising!

Hi MN Jeff, Mike, will, SteveL, Barkevious, Holly, john, Danne, Joe B, Thierry and all other "Funk Fans"! :)
  9:10pm
will:

Was that "relive your youth" of "relieve your youth"?
  9:11pm
Caryn:

Damn, missed "Ready Steady Go"! Well, it's not as if I wasn't going to listen to this in the archives too.

  9:12pm
Neal Adams:

Confusing White Wedding with The Jags, Barkeviius? Why you, I oughta....
  9:12pm
SteveL:

Barkevious S. I believe the answer is, Fame. The different paths of Idol, Siouxie Sioux, Sid Vicious are fascinating. In the end, they all wanted to be on stage. Billy hit it big, and didn't even die. Always enjoy his bit in The Wedding Singer.
  9:13pm
Cal Zone!:

Mayhem in the PM! It's the New Afternoon Show for Night Owls! Like 32 years never happened!
  9:14pm
john:

What Cal said. Making me wish I'd gone to NYU. Or at least listened on the internet between school vacations.
  9:15pm
will:

Fast answer to Barkevious's first comment: Very easy--gimme money!!
  9:15pm
Caryn:

@SteveL: very true. I actually wonder what would've happened if Idol had played the T-1000 in "Terminator 2" like he was originally supposed to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
efd:

Now now, Neal, Barkevious meant no harm! I think was strictly referring to the career arc of Mr. Idol.

Hi everyone, thanks for listening! Let's get those pledges coming in, especially you lurkers who I don't even know about! :)
  9:16pm
Minnesota Jeff:

Neal Adams is here?! I loved that Beast falling page in X-Men #57, Neal!
  9:16pm
Thierry:

a gem, this 12''
  9:16pm
Billy Idol:

];,] (Does that look anything like my lip sneer, or have I been drinking again?)
  9:17pm
Neal Adams:

Not me Jeff, sorry.
  9:19pm
will:

I will pledge again, just because I must, the EFD show is the nazz, and got me back into listening to FMU shows live, for the surprises they contain.
  9:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Shoes! There's some classic power pop right here! :)
  9:21pm
Oh Evan:

I go back to those days stateside hearing this barage of exciting fresh ,beautiful music ,much of it from the uk but my youth was filled with the joy of being alive during a most unique time in history. and you sir were the pilot for a good part of the radio , round here . thanks for still being here evan .
  9:22pm
Chowder:

You are killing it EFD, keep up the good work!
  9:22pm
Neal Adams:

And sorry Barkevious..
  9:22pm
Billy Idol:

Caryn: I didn't know that about Terminator Idol. That would have been interesting. Robert Patrick sure worked a lot (just looked it up of course.)
  9:22pm
Cal Zone!:

@John. There was no 'internet' in 1982. It was a magical time when we listened to post punk on the radio, danced at clubs, and waited for imported vinyl and tiny indie punk 45's to turn up at boutique record stores. It's too easy to be a hipster today...we used to have to work at it!
  9:22pm
Edley:

This Bill Nelson song RULES. One of my faves :)
  9:22pm
SteveL:

Caryn: Er, I just outed my Bill Idol alter ego.
  9:23pm
Mike East:

Hey Matt - looks like Marco Benevento is getting around. Doing a live spot on WNYC today as well.
  9:23pm
Cal Zone!:

I've got this Bill Nelson on a 2x45 gatefold set!
  9:24pm
john:

@Cal: I was at school in rural Connecticut in 1982. It was damn near impossible.

I've got the 12" of Flaming Desire--the double-7" is way cooler.
  9:24pm
steve:

hi evan!
  9:25pm
Caryn:

The breaking news on the tv is that archaeologists believe they've found the exact spot where Julius Caesar was stabbed to death. Kinda fits the mayhem show!

@SteveL: I promise to ignore it and move on, if you so want :)
  9:25pm
SteveL:

Matt from Springfield: If you like The Shoes, get their new stuff. Heard it yet? Pretty damned good.

(Midwest pop REPRESENT, please, thank you.)
  9:26pm
Kat in Chicago:

Forgot what a glorious synthy mess "Flaming Desire" is.
  9:26pm

Caryn: Nothing to see here.

New Shoes record is my fave rave album of the year, for what that's worth.
  9:27pm
Holly in NC:

@john - I was in school in suburban Connecticut in 1982 - no better. I was no Legs or Thurston, that's for sure!
  9:27pm
Danne D:

e tu cnn?
  9:28pm
SteveL:

efd: Watch your language!
  9:28pm
Danne D:

Interesting about the Julius Caesar news. Actually they had a thing on Caligula on History last night which kinda threw me, cuz, that was like actually someone from history and not an alien
  9:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

@SteveL: Really? Sounds like I should look into some "new Shoes" then! Thanks john too.
@Mike: That's great! Must be the NY leg of Marco's publicity tour.
  9:28pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Jaz came home!
  9:30pm
Mike East:

@Matt - looks like he didn't bring Joanne, though. FMU gets the good stuff.
  9:30pm
john:

@Holly, I lived in suburban Connecticut then, but at least unlike school, at home we were just barely in range of WNYU--another town or two over and it was gone.
  9:31pm
SteveL:

Got my Martha swag from last marathon. If you've never pledged won a WFMU DJ mix, you really haven't lived.

  9:34pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Oh, I missed Flaming Desire (and the 12 inch too)
  9:34pm
SteveL:

I'm going to play old man for a moment: Remembering when band names like Killing Joke, Dead Kennedys, Throbbing Gristle, were damned near frightening to even hear. It was a very unusual time in music history.

OK, I'm not old any more.
  9:35pm
Cal Zone!:

Question for Evan. What percentage of tonight's vinyl was purchased from 99 Records vs. Bonaparte Records?
  9:35pm
Danne D:

Why can I see Ozzy covering this song somehow?
  9:36pm
Minnesota Jeff:

"Lots of pizza and ice cold cokes!" Ha!!
  9:36pm
SteveL:

Danne D: I can see that very clearly.
  9:36pm
Minnesota Jeff:

Danne D - Whoa! Yeah, totally! I can see that as well.

Trying to think who I'd have seen in New Haven round that era. Stranglers comes to mind first.

Vibrators. (anything but "Pogo Dancing" Talk about a sell-out attempt.)

I saw Siouxie and The Banshees play at the Malibu nightclub on LI in 1980 or so. I was at the club early and watched her puke her guts out on stage during the sound check. She came out a couple hours later and put on a magnificent show! A real trooper!

@john - see, I'd never even heard of the Stranglers in '82. My other high school era New Haven shows = Neil Young, David Bowie, the Police (with REM opening) & Rush. Rush X3, actually :-)
  9:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

This is early early U2, watching Joy Division record era U2.

I did NOT see U2 during this time period--twice. I believe that was an error.

I LOVED the 1st 2 U2 lps. High school, people - & efd's right - they were absolutely not mainstream.

U2, Kat?
  9:45pm
john:

@Holly, sounds like I may have a few years on you, and just to lose my hipness cred, I saw Tom Petty at the New Haven Coliseum in '81. Split Enz opened. And I took some crap about playing the first couple U2 records in the dorm, yeah.

@Danne: Wow, "Heat Of The Moment"! Had to look that up. (So a new "arena rock" supergroup actually touted the then-current view that the discos hold no charm for you! True for many people, but such a trying-to-fit-in lyric! :)

@John - And pre-show Adam ate at the Post Road HoJo's, a friend of mine may still have his spoon.

I remember (gonna have to ban that verb here soon) when U2 were written about as spearheading a [ahem] new psychedelia along with Echo and the Bunnymen and Teardrop Explodes. Probably still have the mags that promulgated that nonsense, though the writers and editors have presumably been too embarrassed to emerge from their bunker in a quarter century.
  9:50pm
Danne D:

@M_f_S That album is #GHS-2046 I believe. I'll double check when I get home. Didn't see 'em live until the 25th anniversary tour though (gotta love a 25th anniversary for a band-lineup that last 2 years).
  9:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Really, did Adam & the Ants wear costumes like band uniforms? Like George Clinton said, you could tell the hardcore fans at Parliament shows because "they dressed even crazier than we did"!
  9:50pm
Danne D:

(a little hard to get to the arena on my own when I was 12)
  9:51pm

@Kat - lots of gold braid. And epaulets. They don't make band uniforms like they used, at least not in public schools.

@Matt - Yes. Yes, they did. And of course I had the makeup, also.
  9:54pm

@Cal: Nice score! I wish colleges (and especially comm. colleges!) still booked the kinds of bands they once did!

@Danne: Well a 25th anniversary lineup "is what it is". Might not last too long, but if you enjoy them it's your chance to see the band. If you think you'll have fun, enjoy it! :)

Matt from Springfield:

Recreation working! I noticed right away you didn't have the "American Woman" riff as your bed music (from a hip hop song from after '82 you know! :)
  10:00pm
Thierry:

Didn't The Pretenders release the first single of the 80's, in January 1980?
  10:00pm
SteveL:

How long have those records been sitting on the shelf?
  10:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

KEILI!

  10:05pm
Minnesota Jeff:

The bass on this song sure ain't hungry, its farting all over the place!
  10:05pm
Caryn:

Too bad I was too young to enjoy these at the time. The latest songs played so far came out when I was 3. At that age, I was just listening to classic rock, Zappa and Sha Na Na.

thanks efd--I will contribute to the pledge drive this week by the way

Caryn: Zappa at three? Nice.

Yes. Pledge! Where the heck else are you going to hear this!

Got any coke?
  10:08pm
Cal Zone!:

Eddie Tenpole! Where's he at now?
  10:09pm

@SteveL & Matt: well, my dad was a record collector and my mom was a rock journalist, so me and my brother were raised on lots of music.

I can think of a couple other bands that were kind of soundtracky for me from the New Afternoon Show, but there's no way I'm going to remember if EFD played them or it was someone else. But what came to mind was Human Switchboard (you did play them, if I recall) and (are you all seated comfortably?) Urban Verbs.
  10:12pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

This Senders song is exactly the same as Crawl Up and Die by Stray Cats

I'm back! I feel like I'm living a 'Losing My Edge' scenario, got held up talking with a Mtn Goats fanatic who freaked when I told I had the Shrimper cassettes ;-) THEN in car local dj played Trans-era Neil Young - spooky given that was 1st Neil show I ever saw.
  10:44pm

Couple of those Rats elpees still hold up well. Not all of them, but Tonic and Surfacing both still sound great!

  10:54pm
Holly in NC:

@John - 1/2 show was Trans, 1/3 was acoustic. Actually a better & less disconcerting show then when I saw him many years later in Chapel Hill with Sonic Youth opening. Oh and, and, and I have a Sonic Youth at Hampshire College concert tee shirt ca 1986-87, that is some cred right there, I think ;-)
Disclosure - I didn't see the SY show, I chose to stay in and write (gulp) an econ paper & finish a lighting design project, , a good friend brought me the t shirt. Cannot tell a lie. I've never been cool.

do you have comateens? "cool chick", perhaps? chin chin? It's funny how much this resembles the radio show I did nearly 20 years later. It didn't even occur to me that it was pretty much a throwback show at the time, but it was.
