Listener comments!

  12:03pm
Cecile:

I think I heard this once or twice back in the day.
  12:03pm
robyn:

yesssssssss!
  12:03pm
Greg from Bloomfield:

"Cheaters Never Win." Funny, because I just paused a podcast about faking scientific results to switch over to Duane...
  12:04pm
Cecile:

yayayayaya!
  12:05pm
Duane:

I Love that Greg! Hi Robyn..Cecile, you amaze me with you random radio recollections:) bless you!
  12:06pm
Caryn:

Hello all! Hi Duane! Promising to be another stellar show.
  12:07pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Mighty sweet beginning! How is everyone?
  12:09pm
Cecile:

the people at WHDF and WMPL back in the 70s would still spin a few things just because they came in the mailbox. Even though the satellite cart blight was just beginning to start.
  12:10pm
Eli:

Good morning my friends
  12:10pm
Duane:

Happy Gibbons Day Eli!
  12:11pm
Cecile:

I remember doing a paper on being a DJ for career day, and predicting in '77 that "radio would become constrained and boring." I was 16. hahahhahaha. I was a dork.
  12:12pm
paula pc:

nice key change!!
  12:12pm
paula pc:

and nice segue!!
  12:13pm
Caryn:

Well, Cecile, you were kinda right about a lot of radio. Certainly as far as highly restricting playlists are concerned.
  12:14pm
Duane:

How are ya Jeremy? Great to hear for you
  12:14pm
Cecile:

yeah. The regional hit slowly started to die in 80s.
I wish I hadn't been right.
But then I discovered free form and that made things better.
  12:16pm
Cecile:

that drum beat sped up is house music.
  12:17pm
still b/p:

I DO want to partay...but have to jump away for this and that, dammit. Could use a full shot of this show.
  12:20pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Hanging in. Drove in from Boston in that mess last night so I'm a little zonked. A little Duane & some coffee and I should be back to it!
  12:23pm
robyn:

interestingly, most pictures of walter gibbons online make him look like kind of a dork. which is endearing.
  12:29pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

It is your show that i blame Duane for getting my house so sparkly clean every Wednesday! Thanks!
  12:30pm
Eli:

Happy Gibbons Day, all!
  12:30pm
Duane:

He was a big dork! A big spacey gay christian dork
  12:32pm
Greg from Bloomfield:

Some of my best friends are spacey gay Christian dorks.
  12:32pm
Duane:

Mine too Greg! God bless 'em
  12:36pm
paula pc:

me three -- viva BSGCDs!!
  12:38pm
Caryn:

Don't have any friends that are the full quartet (or quintet, if we count the "big" part), but do know quite a few lovable combos of 3 or less of those characteristics.
  12:39pm
robyn:

lol, "huge fan for months" MONTHS I TELL YOU!
  12:42pm
Cecile:

Greg and Duane, I was going to make a crack about my love for Kaskade, but he seems like such a nice guy that I can't even joke about him.
  12:43pm
Cecile:

please feel free to tease ME my about my love for Kaskade, though.
  12:46pm
Cecile:

me and Snooki :/
  12:48pm
Greg from Bloomfield:

Honestly, I had to look up who that is. What I don't know about DJs and disco could just about fill Giants Stadium. But that's why I'm here!
  12:49pm
Murphy Kat:

GREAT Show!
  12:49pm
Cheri Pi:

Hey Duane! So glad to be hearing this.
  12:51pm
Eli:

This is wonderful
  12:51pm
paula pc:

really really really great
  12:52pm
Cecile:

Kaskade filled up Staples Center for a show, Greg, so you might be even.
  12:53pm
Cecile:

good stuff, wow. Love it.
  12:53pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Hey Duane! On the iPhone, so it's gonna be intermittent....
  12:53pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Hey Duane! On the iPhone, so it's gonna be intermittent....
  12:55pm
Duane:

Hi Ja! Thanx for checkin in bro!
  12:56pm
Duane:

Jan!
  1:01pm
Cecile:

hey, jan!
  1:01pm
Caryn:

Had to google Kaskade. Hmm, Mormon DJ/producer sensation... Interesting combo.
  1:02pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Duane! Everyone!
  1:03pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Hi Cecile
  1:06pm
Mike East:

Alright alright alright alright!
  1:07pm
Cecile:

how goes the teachin'?
  1:09pm
Cecile:

OK, i have to find everything Love Committee ever recorded. This is crazy - it's like Marvin Gaye and Bobby Womack and the Temptations decided to make disco records.
  1:19pm
Cecile:

STET!
  1:20pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Intermittent, Jan? That just makes it a new remix.
  1:20pm
monica:

sorry to say that daddy-o wasn't a fan of this mix. soundin' great, duane!
  1:22pm
Duane:

Doesn't surpise me in the least Monica..so happy you are tuned in!
  1:23pm
Murphy Kat:

this mix kills it
  1:27pm
Cecile:

loleatta...
  1:28pm
monica:

duane, have some pre-disco 7"s from walter's personal collection. he wrote his name on the labels like so many djs did. shirley at rock&soul put them in a box in the corner of the store after walter passed. he was storing some of his belongings in the store's basement. he'd been working there towards the end of his life.
  1:30pm
Duane:

Thats incredible, Monica! I think you might've told me that a long time ago..Wow!
  1:32pm
Caryn:

Hah, was wondering when Loleatta was going to be played! Because she's the one I always connect with Salsoul & Gibbons.
  1:36pm
bb:

duane did you or daniel make me buy the jungle music set? i still owe one of you for that
  1:36pm
monica:

They're in storage now but one that I remember is "Something We Got" by Minx (Mercury). So happy you're doing this trib, Duane! He was a sweet guy.
  1:41pm
Duane:

BB: That was probably Daniel..who is a HUGE Gibbons enthusiast!
  1:43pm
monica:

duane, unfortunately it wasn't a memorial. shirley (Rock&Soul owner) just wanted to make $$$ on the stuff that had taking up room in her basement!
  1:51pm
Duane:

It is now monica:)
  1:54pm
paula pc:

this track is a monster
  1:55pm
Neg-guh-tor:

This tribute reminds me of the reason why things are so shitty these days. AIDS destroyed our cultural leaders and spiritual guides! So many. What we have left is no less than the dark ages. I mean it. Someone needs to do a study on the impact that disease has had on our art world. Devastating......
  1:57pm
?:

DUANE YOU ARE MY FAVORITE DJ I LOVE YOU
  1:57pm
Neg-guh-tor:

Not trying to be a bummer. I have thinking about the hole left by the massive loss in the 80s and 90s. These people were supposed to bring on the new; curate the future, you know.
  1:58pm
Neg-guh-tor:

Good thing we have Duane and WFMU! Cheers!
  2:00pm
monica:

you guys are killin' it, duane! great show.
  2:01pm
Duane:

Neg-Guh-Tor; Fran Leibowitz spoke about this a couple of years ago at BAM. Dedicated a whole 40 mintues to it. Sad but true! The good things is that the art remains..we can't let it be forgotten..and we're not! :)
  2:03pm
Duane:

Thanx Monica :)
  2:06pm
Neg-guh-tor:

It lives on, indeed! I think we have had to start over in a way though. The artistic frenzy in the late '70s was an apex, I believe. Then poof! I think a serious study should be done on this absence. Great show! Made me think....
  2:22pm
Brass Knuckles:

Hot.
  2:24pm
common:

great fucking set duane
  2:27pm
Duane:

Thanx Common!
  2:28pm
Caryn:

Don't know whether I should salute the Orchestra or Gibbons, but this is kicking it. I'll salute both and add a salute to the set's DJ.
  2:32pm
Blooie:

break it down!
  2:33pm
Duane:

Wow! This is the recreation of one of Water Gibbon's 2 Pigs in a Hog cut up he used to do live. He use to cut two copies of this 90 second track back and forth for ten minutes back in '75..Crazy!
  2:34pm
Eli:

Look how short the playlist is this week. LONG JAMS
  2:34pm
robyn:

awww i was waiting for arthur russell! i love this song. let's go swimming
  2:36pm
Eli:

so good.
  2:41pm
Brass Knuckles:

These mixes just don't have enough cowbells for my taste.
  2:42pm
Caryn:

Plenty of cowbell in this one, Brass Knuckles! :)
Also: awesome track.
  2:42pm
Duane:

Brass Knuckles: Wanna start a Gibbons all cowbell tribute band? Cowbell and vocals..thats it!
  2:44pm
Brass Knuckles:

NEEDS MORE!!! Yeah, sounds good. Like to keep it real though and have the bells actually attached to the cows.
  2:46pm
Greg from Bloomfield:

http://harikarirocks.net/images/CowbellCartoon.jpg
  2:49pm

  2:53pm
Eli:

  2:54pm
Mark, Don, and Mel:

*Mark, not arc (Damn. Minimized my Accu-Impact by at least 40%)
  2:55pm
Beastie:

Hey Ladies ... (cowbell thingy)
  2:58pm
Eli:

They could start by listening to this radio show
  2:59pm
common:

Wild Combination is a great doc about arthur rusell...was that already brought up?
  3:00pm
Eli:

  3:03pm
