Row, row, row your boat, gently down the STREAM.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.
Welcome back, Amanda.
  11:54am
Matt from Springfield:

Hooray hooray! Amanda's back!
Hope you enjoyed your vacation!
  12:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

AND on time for steel drum "Sweet Caroline"! Love that intro!
  12:00pm
Carmichael:

Hi, landlubber Amanda.
  12:01pm
joe:

'ello folks
  12:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Carm! 'Ello joe!

This Richard & Linda sounds interesting--has some of that Cajun feel Richard likes, but kind of arranged like the B-52s and the other new alternative rock of that time.
  12:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Are you at sea, may I ask? ;)
  12:04pm
listener james from westwood:

good wednesday, all! welcome back amanda! mike lupica held forth with aplomb during your trip!
  12:06pm
Carmichael:

@Matt: you mean, emotionally??
  12:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Perhaps. Since you used "landlubber", anyway :)

Hi LJFW! I was glad for the opportunity to catch Mike Lupica live, since he was here before I found WFMU. I hope he comes back for more fill-ins!
  12:09pm
kat330:

Starting off your last for a month with a wonderful bang, Amanda! R & L are special faves of mine. Thanks for bringing your A. game! :)

Hi, good people!
  12:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi kat! And, lest I forget...hi Brian, firstie today!
And, hello to all good people yet to post!
  12:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

All right, Lene Lovich!
I bought that Stateless LP this RSD--not great condition, but only a buck!

Hey, Mathyou!

Good Wednesday afternoon to one and all! Thanks for treating Mike so nicely last week, he deserved it. Now back to the old grind...
  12:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

John Barleycorn just made me think that covers are great for a personal demo--what better way to showcase your "style" than to show how you handle various known songs.
  12:22pm
kat330:

You here, NGH? A quick alert that for some moments there, the Amanda and Duane streams had a *very* nice thing going at the same time. A bit off now though.
  12:25pm
listener james from westwood:

matt, in addition to mike's radio-show archives, he also did a podcast for a while. quickie little 3-track-long shows just right for a commute or gym trip. check the anti static archives via the fmu podcast page here: http://wfmu.org/podcast
  12:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

I remember this (orig) Bow Wow Wow song from my old Living In Oblivion CDs, didn't know what it was about until I learned about the "home taping" movement and the cassette lengths (C-30/60/90).

Hey thanks james! That sounds like a cool podcast.

NS,
sound has disappeared?
  12:33pm

Today is a nice island stopover, before Amanda goes on sabbatical to Vermont, and we set sail over the mysterious sea again.
  12:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

@CC: Are you listening to the GTDR stream? Going fine here.

http://wfmu.org/wfmu_drummer.pls
  12:36pm
COSMIC CHARLIE:

no its not working on that channel you gave me Matt.

The WFMU channel is ok though.
  12:37pm
COSMIC CHARLIE:

got it now - my mistake volume control at zero!
  12:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Working in QuickTime here--try another media player, or else refresh your current one.
  12:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

NM CC, I've done that before too! The only way to "mute" Winamp for example is to turn the volume to zero, and sometimes you forget that! :)
  12:39pm
kat330:

Matt, could you invent the program for Doug's stream discussed last night, then go back in a time machine you've already invented to Monday morning? The vocalist I was fascinated by that I heard on GTDR cannot be pinned down -- no needle in the haystack could be found. :|
  12:42pm
Carmichael:

Matt, you can mute QT by clicking on the speaker icon to the left of the volume control. I have to listen to voice mail messages occasionally through my speakers, and found that method to be handy.
  12:44pm
COSMIC CHARLIE:

thought that was Billy Idol's White Wedding starting then!
"nice day for a white wedding"
  12:46pm
listener james from westwood:

kat, way back in analog-radio land, my mom heard a classical tune on the radio that she dug but didn't recognize, and then canvassed manhattan asking record store employees what the tune was, whistling it for each clerk. i forget what it eventually turned out to be. you might have to record a quick mp3 of you whistling or humming the tune (or link up on skype and whistle it!) and email it to doug!
  12:53pm
kat330:

@LJfW: Great idea, but it wasn't that kind of song. Not a catchy melody -- a very long, languorous pop song with a power vocalist, lo-fi sounding (either demo or live). I can't reform a single word or musical phrase from it. Ah well, it will get back to me if it's meant to. :)
  12:54pm
Carmichael:

kat, if you can nail down the time, Doug should be able to tell you who it was.
  12:56pm
kat330:

Carm, we already tried that and agreed it was a lost cause. My very bad not to ask within the first hours of hearing it. He can only research about 10-12 hrs. worth, and it was already around 30 hours when I asked him.

In good news, however, I won my match with the second bank yesterday! Two for two.
  12:58pm
kat330:

Where'd Matt go? Somewhere in his time machine??
  1:01pm
Carmichael:

I remember seeing Nick Lowe a long time ago (went to see the headliner, can't remember who ...), and Brinsley himself was playing with Lowe. Pleasant surprise!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm

@Carmichael -- so cool!
  1:05pm

With this set, wouldn't be inappropriate to play Lowe's

Hi, Doug! Again thanks for going above and beyond in the haystack!
  1:10pm

Best premium I never got. I am not smart (although I did get Amanda and efd's great comps.)
  1:12pm
northguineahills:

I need another cup of yerba mate before I can comment... (and I've actually been listen to WFMU streams since 8:40.... not used to being productive so early.)
  1:14pm
kat330:

Yay, NGH!! Gainful employment, or toward such?
  1:16pm
Brian in UK:

Amanda, got anything by The Root Canals?
Who is doing your fill-ins?
  1:17pm
kat330:

@Brian: Doug's probably feeling no pain if that's why you were aiming for. :)
  1:19pm
kat330:

What? yes, not why...sigh.
  1:21pm
Brian in UK:

Oral Hygienist? Old wax pressings. Think it's beer o'clock.
  1:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Stepped out for lunch! Returned now, but not in a time machine. The WFMU webpage has what seems to be the world's only functioning time machine, but I don't have one for physical travel :)

Just remember to email Doug ASAP if you hear something you absolutely need to know about; or use Winamp, that tells me the artist name and song.
  1:23pm
Doug S.:

Nope. No drugs for Doug. I am lucid and ready to pogo my fillings to the floor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm

@SteveL -- Two out of three ain't bad.
  1:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Speaking of which, hi Doug!
Chompers keep on chompin'?
  1:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

@LJFW: Fascinating story about the Classical tune, though the entire Classical repertoir is by definition pretty established, and in theory anyone skilled enough could recognize an old piece if they're knowledgable about music.
  1:28pm
northguineahills:

Just perusing various "employment" agencies, that aggressively guarantee results in 90 days, or your money back (10%-25% upfront, the rest after hired). Been talking to many making sales pitches to me. My friend in the Upper Midwest wasn't able to convince his boss to switch employees mid-campaign, so, now I need to look at more immediate money makers.
  1:30pm
COSMIC CHARLIE:

Doug,
got a temporary crown in at the moment, gonna have the permanent fitted next week.
In pain every so often with it and feels like a load of plastic in my mouth!
  1:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Raspberries Preserved"! A tribute album I presume--I oughta check that out, sounds cool!
  1:31pm
kat330:

Since I'm on a self-correction kick here: OK, now *my* memory was telling me "SwitchBOX Susan," but these days I second-guess everything in memory, so I go to my iTunes playlist: It was *there* the info is input as "SwitchBOARD Susan" -- and those titles arrive automatically. Hm.
  1:34pm
kat330:

Welcome back, Matt. Yeah, I don't need no stinkin' drugs at the dentist either, Doug. NGH, still sending out positive thoughts for your job search, my friend }}}}}}}
  1:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Danielson Familie! I think I've only heard them on the Scenario, but what a band!

Dental drugs, I've never had anything except very local meds, which they pricked in with a needle anyway. When I had all my wisdom teeth removed I chose to just be knocked out for a short time, like 30 minutes.
  1:39pm
Carmichael:

This is a great Beach Boys-ish comp Gaylord put together. BTW, The Blue Vans do some great Beach Boys sounds as well.
  1:39pm
Lewis:

how the heck did I miss Gaylord's premium this year?
  1:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Love this one! Love Gaylord's whole premium, any fan of Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys will like the parodies and tributes from the 60s to the present contained therein.
  1:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: The Blue VAN, from Denmark, or "Vans"?
I have one song from them I heard in a commercial, but didn't realize they had BBs like tunes.
  1:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Lewis: There's still time! This fall during stealth fundraiser, pledge and get any premiums from this year you wish you had gotten! Can't wait? You can even do it now!
  1:46pm

Thanks @Matt = I believe I will partake!

Matt from Springfield:

Jeff Mullen is great. And Mike Sin, he RAWKS!
  1:51pm
kat330:

Yeah, and conveniently, I always get an e-mail from Sin whenever he fills in for anyone.
  1:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: I as well. Also for PGB--it's good idea to get on mailing lists for fill-ins you love, but who come in irregularly. Love Bill Zurat, wish he had a list, but he's only filled in 1/2 times a year, and always announced ahead of time.
  1:56pm
listener james from westwood:

i've been lucky not to need dental drugs for anything beyond a shot before drilling. but i did take half a codeine tablet once when a sinus infection hit me with a headache so strong i felt it in all the fillings in my upper teeth. good thing i was still living @ home b/c that half tablet knocked me on my ASS. had to crawl upstairs to bed. scary shit.
  1:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ya see people, THIS is what happens when you try to compress MP3s too much!!!

Seriously, love experimental electronics. Is this new 2005 or re-issued older stuff?
  1:59pm
kat330:

@LJfW: Say I had that sinus infection, massive face cavity / headache just at last week's end. Know exactly what you mean, except I have no fillings. It was a struggle, but I managed to ride it out sans painkiller.

northguineahills:

I always love Carlos Giffoni, and his acidey house noise project is really fun.

Kat & Matt: How did you get on Mike Sin's email list? I follow him on Twitter. His sets are as sharp as they get.
  2:01pm
kat330:

@SteveL: I'm sure you can send him and email and ask to. I didn't sign up for anyone's lists, but sometimes if you comment during a DJ's show, they have you on a compiled list.
  2:03pm

I never tire of seeing Leo Kottke live. He's a marvel to watch, and he is a quirky guy to boot.

He'll be happy to add you to the list, I'm sure.

  2:17pm
Skirkie:

Well shucks. That was nice of you.
  2:19pm
kat330:

I can empathize with that, Steve, but I'm more concerned about poseurs using my handle and figure the absence of my email address that the various DJs have routinely seen will clue them in to a ruse. Also, this has always seemed a safe, anti-spamming community.
  2:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Skirkie: Here's to a swift bike homecoming! Welcome to JC indeed...
  2:22pm
john:

wooooooooooooooot! stopping by late, leaving early, but good to see The Shams on the playlist. That album does not get enough love.
  2:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: They can ID you by your IP, though that frequently can change. Using different "pseudonyms" for conceptual humor quite frequently, my email is my hidden "signature" for DJ purposes. I never make any comment I wouldn't sign my name to (and besides, they can easily figure out it's you anyway).
  2:24pm
SteveL:

Oh man. Had a crush on a girl named Tracy when this song came out. Sad to say, she never held me close.

Ron Dante! The man behind the Archies and The Detergents (Leader of the Laundromat). Great recording; that's him on all the voices.
  2:25pm
SteveL:

Ba, ba ba bap ba baaa!
  2:25pm
Skirkie:

That bike was abandoned and rusting away in a friends garage and I gave it TLC and made it rideable again. The only monetary loss was the fancy pedals I put on it.

It was a project bike, I still have another.

Still... it was mine.
  2:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Wow, didn't know the Cuff Links were a project of his!
  2:28pm
Carmichael:

Skirkie, this is for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m68-oWBh9Ow
  2:29pm
kat330:

@Matt: If it's as easy as that, then why don't they boot the fake DCE's and fake you, too, wasn't there? I think they only get a general region from most IPs, which leaves the NYC area wide open. For whatever reason, Google always thinks we're in the Indianapolis area, which is frustrating with Louisville actually the closer metro area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm
Amanda:

Awesome john (I am late saying this) -- I agree about the Shams album!
  2:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: There's several one-off spoofers though; it's prob at the DJs discretion, but generally they only block IPs that are consistently harassing, like week-to-week or several comments in a row. Besides the regional only aspect, it's another reason they're not IP trigger happy.
  2:35pm
john:

Always found it weird how that one went under the radar. I guess it wasn't in sync w/ the times. I still have my copy of it!
  2:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

Greg Kihn Band catalogue track! And Flesh For Lulu!

Is that Turntable 2 giving you trouble again??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
Amanda:

Indeed, TT #2 is the culprit.
  2:44pm
kat330:

Aptly named then.
  2:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

Our equipment can sometimes have minds of their own--and #2 seems disgruntled! Or perhaps just misunderstood...any phonograph psychiatrists out there?
  2:48pm
kat330:

Maybe it's feeling needled.

Have a great month in VT, (I was too busy eating corn-on-the-cob Mexican style to type w/ my gooey fingers). Thanks for the great set. Forgot to mention I've always like that Teenage Fan Club track.

I am familiar with 'dingus'. Years back, my wife, (we were both photojournalists at the time,) covered a Russian-roulette death (yes, really,) where the surviving friend's surname was Dingus. It provided many bad-karma laughs.

We all hope you have an enjoyable sabbatical, and get a lot of stuff done!
Warmly awaiting your return, but thanks for arranging great fill-ins! Even though it's Web radio, it makes us feel like you won't forget us!

Amanda, you will be missed of course. Enjoy your away time. Certainly you have earned it, if only from your efforts on this show. Marry me. (Did I say that out loud?)

I will not be entertaining any proposals of marriage from already-married people! Not even Mike VL! Have a great September, everyone, and I'll be back with you soon enough.
