Favoriting July 4, 2012: Disco Indepen-dance Party!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Summertime always reminds me of listening to Ken "Spider" Webb and Ricky Ricardo and, of course the Chief Rocker Frankie Crocker on WBLS. In that spirit, I present the Evan "Funk" Davies Disco Indepen-dance Party! You'll hear old-school classics, along with some lost gems you'll wish you'd heard 30 years ago! Watch the fireworks reflect off your mirror ball while you celebrate life, liberty, and the pursuit of the perfect beat

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Disco disclaimer! I'm keeping the lines blurry and using "disco" as a catch-all term for my take on fun dance music from the mid-70s to the early '80s, expanding the boundaries of the traditional disco era (and sound, for that matter).
Weems! Awesome bit of info! Great to have you here.
Curious, and not trying to provoke controversy by any means, but in light of your comment on my Facebook page - is there a song (or songs) that you consider the "last" disco song?
  10:01pm
Weems:
Good Times by Chic was a game changer in the summer of 79. Remember not liking it at the time. Less bpm than your typical disco track. Stripped down, less produced.
Then DiSco Demolition night. By the
fall of 79, rappers Delight came out, sampling Good Times, and the world changed forever.
  10:11pm
Weems:
Used to go to a record store every Saturday in Rochester, because they carried Billboard magazine. I'd always review the Disco chart. Makes me wonder when Billboard changed it to the "Dance" chart
  10:12pm
steve:
hi evan! got home just in time for your show. explosions, car alarms and cheers on all sides of me in greenpoint.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
efd:
Weems, interesting question - I'd guess sometime in the early '80s as rap came more to the forefront.
Hi Steve, glad you made it back in time!
  10:16pm
monica:
do it, frankie! do it to it!
  10:22pm
Tom - In Gravesend Brooklyn:
I still love the pre-disco funk .. although the early so called Disco classics like from around 1975ish -- wouldn't admit it at that time ,, but I liked it.. but once Rod ie... Do you think I'm sexy .. kinda - nay but '78 79--- Disco is cool fun .. but one beat and like George Clinton once.. said about most latter disco tunes got kinda like after a while making love with just one stroke...
  10:22pm
steve:
any listeners ever make it to any of david mancuso's disco loft parties, past or present? i finally got to one last year, fun time.
  10:24pm
Mike VL:
Didn't know "Devil's Gun" was the first song played on the opening night of Studio 54...at least that's what Wikipedia tells me.
  10:24pm
monica:
  11:30pm
Holly in NC:
  11:31pm
Heatwave was probably 3rd on the bill of 6 acts. All the R&b shows had A handful of acts. That may have been a Kool & The Gang Show. Or the Jackson's. Saw Meco! Wild Cherry too. Trammps. Of course the Take Funk to Heaven in 77 Pfunk show, but that ain't disco! But you could play UndiSco Kid
  11:31pm
You'll have to petition Station Manager Ken to get an EFD dance channel stream.
I don't think this Shannon classic is out of place at all. To me it falls between disco and house. Danced to it a zillion times back in the day.
