When I lived in southern Michigan, there were many people from KY and TN whose parents had come north for auto work or general economic opportunity. That's how Chicago became a distant offshoot of Delta culture. :-)
In the 1800s, settlement went east-west from the Atlantic. In the first half of the 20th, it went south to north. In more recent decades, it's shifted to north-south, as southern cities have caught up on all their lost time by growing much more rapidly than older northern ones.
