April 11, 2012: Remembering Richie Teeter, with special guest Andy Shernoff

The Dictators are among a handful of bands that I discovered during my high-school years in the mid-'70s (thanks to my influential friend Jim McIntyre) and have remained an avid fan of to this day. I was still a little too young to have been aware of Go Girl Crazy when it came out, so the first album of theirs I heard was Manifest Destiny. I was hooked instantly by everything from the anthemic "Science Gone Too Far" to the (relatively) softer sounds of "Hey Boys" and the wistful "Sleepin' With The TV On." The lead singer on those last two songs, and the drummer on that whole album (and its even harder-rocking follow-up Bloodbrothers), was Richie Teeter. He passed away this past Tuesday at the age of 61. Hearing this news was like hearing that I'd lost an old friend that I'd grown up with... I was absolutely crushed. From getting into them in high school to moving to their hometown of NYC for college to the love I still have for their music, The Dictators are one of the bands that I've felt closest to for most of my music-loving life. I happened to meet Rich completely by chance several years ago, when I went into the Sam Ash drum shop on 48th Street maybe six or seven years ago. I noticed him behind the counter, and saw that his nametag read "Rich Teeter." I was dumbfounded. I asked if he was "THE Rich Teeter," and he laughed and said he guessed he was; this of course prompted an outpouring of assorted inane fanboy comments from yours truly. He then good-naturedly insisted that I inform the kids in the store who worked for him that yes, he was indeed famous! I was only too happy to oblige. A couple of years ago I bumped into him again, this time at a pizza place in Penn Station. I tried to buy him a slice, and he politely (but firmly) declined. In both of these brief meetings he struck me as a super nice and humble guy, and that sense has been borne out by several remembrances posted by his bandmates Handsome Dick Manitoba, Scott "Top Ten" Kempner, and my guest on this program, Andy Shernoff as well as by longtime fans. When I learned of his passing I knew that I had to pay tribute to his impact on my life musically; I hope you'll enjoy hearing some of his work on this edition of The Evan "Funk" Davies show. |

I love the interaction of the comments boards (obviously) but still like that there are a handful of shows that don't employ them, giving them a more old-school feel.

Dear friends,
My apologies for the intrusion, but I just wanted to let you know there is a new Brother JT album available.
It's called "THE SVELTENESS OF BOOGIETUDE". I don't know what that means.
If you're interested you can stream songs or get mp3's at:
http://brotherjt.bandcamp.com/
Or go to www.brotherjt.com if you prefer the usual handmade CD-R's. There is also a link there to get the album for free as a zipfile, for the more technically inclined.
And, in closing, just put together this video for the song "Brother JT": hope a chuckle or titter may be induced...
