Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am charlie:

Greetings, friends. Pick up your can and we can begin communicating!
  10:56am jill:

"Watson -- come here -- I want you."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am charlie:

reading you loud and clear...
  11:02am listener james from westwood:

my desk has a red can that leads directly to the president.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am charlie:

"excuse me, i've got to take this can from the president"
  11:23am Wendy del Formaggio:

My can has cheese in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am charlie:

Does it have a spray top, Wendy?
  11:36am Alf from Upstate:

Welcome back Charlie!
  11:37am Wendy del Formaggio:

Of course it does, Charlie. Only the best for me!
  11:38am listener james from westwood:

rumor had it that lbj had the red can installed in the can. when asked why, he said, "just because i can."
  11:39am glenn:

i am not talking about my can. never, ever. (although it's not bad, if i do say so myself)
  11:41am Erella in toronto:

hello all
  11:41am Doug S.:

@Listener James from Westwood
LBJ did much of his best work whilst sitting on the can. He would force staff members to stand in the bathroom with him while he sat on the toilet.
  11:48am listener james from westwood:

egad! i thought they were at least able to stand outside and listen thru the door while he ruminated.
  11:50am Doug S.:

LBJ in the bathroom: http://bit.ly/HVOECb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am charlie:

Has this chat devolved into a bathroom discussion so soon? It's not about that kind of can! Look at the picture! :)
  11:54am Michael:

Hello charlie and all - I've got tin can in hand and I'm folding Aluminum foil to make a helmet for better reception.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am charlie:

Yes, a tin foil hat will aid reception. Also a belt. Of whatever you've got.
  11:55am ndbob:

morning/afternoon Charlie and everyone!
  11:56am Van in DC:

I'd like to say howdy to Charlie, Doug, and all, if I can
  11:57am listener james from westwood:

anyone have a guess on the language of the pic's caption? danish, possibly? the circle diacritical mark is usually a northern european thang.
  11:58am listener james from westwood:

a fine thursday to all and sundry, fiber optic, wireless, or the finest string!
  12:00pm Dervish:

Those that CAN, do radio, those that can't...listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm charlie:

Howdy to those here already -- Jill, James, Wendy Alf, Glenn, Erella, Doug, Michael, Bob, Van and Dervish -- and those about to join in!
  12:04pm still b/p:

Halloo? Glad to be here to explore string theory!
  12:05pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I hope you'll at least play some CAN. Or some movie clips of James Caan. The extra "a" is for "awesome!"
  12:06pm Van in DC:

I'm busy watching the Masters online today. Strange mashup in my headphones right now between that and this :)
  12:07pm Dixie:

So woman B says to woman A, "What's your cup size?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm charlie:

hi still b/p!
maybe I should play some really quiet music to accompany the golf...
hello dixie...
  12:09pm jan:

Sounds good so far!
  12:09pm Carmichael:

With all the voices in my head, I don't need a can to communicate with anyone. I just yell, especially in public.
  12:10pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I guess it's better than asking the size of her can. "Well, I never!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm charlie:

That was a canny remark, Wendy ;)
I do have a song I might play by someone with a double "a" in his last name, but not James Caan.
Hi Jan!
  12:13pm still b/p:

Speaking of sound transmission technology and volume level...I re-comment that the founding Marshall of Marshall amps just died. Family says it's "happy in the knowledge that he is in a much better place which has just got a whole lot louder!"
  12:16pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Aww, that's sad about the Marshall guy. Rest in peace and thanks for the tinnitus! :-D
  12:18pm still b/p:

At the bottom of the Rolling Stone item on Marshall, there's one "Related" link:
"The Who's Future Uncertain as Townshend's Tinnitus Returns"
  12:20pm Michael:

Saw this company mentioned in the Sunday Times - these are definitely not tin cans -

http://www.oswaldsmillaudio.com/Products/loudspeaker.html
  12:21pm glenn:

to be honest, if i could afford a marshall, i'd buy an orange instead.
  12:22pm listener james from westwood:

that "monarch" model has a venture bros. vibe to it.
  12:22pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I probably shouldn't joke about tinnitus. It sounds like such a horrible, maddening condition. Times when I've temporarily had a ringing in my ear, it's bugged the heck out of me. I haven't had it since I was a teenager, though.
  12:23pm Michael:

b/p - great now we get another "farewell" tour - like the one I saw in 1982 and again in 1989.
  12:24pm Cher:

Farewell. Farewell. Farewell. Farewell. Farewell. Farewell. Farewell. Farewell. Farewell. Farewell.
  12:25pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Michael, a former co-worker of mine used this line to describe another co-worker who kept threatening to quit: "She's had more farewell tours than The Ramones!"
  12:29pm listener james from westwood:

if losing entwistle didn't stop them, tinnitus won't!
  12:30pm ndbob:

I saw The Who only once - in 1970
  12:34pm Van in DC:

Joshua Bell plays a wonderful violin rendition of this tune on "Voice of the Violin".
  12:34pm Herb L.:

So gorgeous. Kenny G usta open his show with this.
  12:34pm listener james from westwood:

this is one of my very favorite operatic performances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm charlie:

i saw the 'oo in the 70s, at madison sq garden ... sat all the way in nowebleed territory -- very loud!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm charlie:

I will look for that, Van
Yes, I looked for this after hearing Kenny play it :)
  12:35pm Laura L:

I always think of Kenny G when I hear this beautiful Gigli performance--Kenny G's old intro song on his show, remember?
  12:35pm Van in DC:

Yeah, I heard the opera performance of this I think just this past Saturday, on local WETA, on their live-from-the-met network live show
  12:36pm jan:

Just looked at the link for Oswald's mill Audio. It's a kind of steam punk audio fetishistic marketing technique- looks expensive. Not very convincing.
  12:37pm Michael:

I saw them in MSG back then too charlie - did you see 'em with Moon?
  12:37pm Doug S.:

Ages ago, the old Tower Records annex at Lafayette & E. 4th had a huge sale on those Gala opera discs. Scarfed 'em up, I did. Yum.
  12:37pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Wow, what a stunning voice Gigli had. So beautiful.
  12:37pm listener james from westwood:

@laura: i did not know that about kenny g. i always think of the "mud kids" rod mckuen intro he had. (miss hearing that, actually. hell, miss hearing him!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm charlie:

(scans thru comments): Is Cher breaking up?
  12:38pm Brain in KU:

Hello Charlie & folks. Is it Swedish (rutabaga)

Woman A "Does my bottom look big in this bustle"
Woman B "Ass"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm charlie:

Hello Brian. The word of the day is "Can" :)
  12:42pm still b/p:

Woman B to Cher: "I can't hear you. You're breaking up."
  12:43pm ndbob:

Yep I did.. the played all of "Tommy" except the Underture.
  12:46pm Carmichael:

I'm trying to remember when I saw the Who. It was in Candlestick Park in SF ("Day on the Green"), back in a previous life. I took an exceptional picture of Daltrey swingin the mic with a crappy Kodak Instamatic.
  12:48pm kat330:

Hi, Charlie, and listeners! Hey, Doug, about 15 mins. ago JT came home for lunch and got GTDS on our magical audio box, yes! I'll be outside now and not at the keyboard, but know I'll be thinking only good things about the show. So delightful so far!
  12:49pm ndbob:

Indeed ... Office Naps is terrific.
  12:50pm Brain in KU:

Saw The Who two weeks afore Woodstock. Weekend of Sharon Tate killings. Prime Tommy time. Then when filming 'The Kids are Alright' at Shepperton Studios. Best live three piece + singer EVER?
  12:52pm ndbob:

One of my favorite Mamas and the Papas songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm charlie:

Hi Carmichael!
Welcome, Kat!
  12:54pm Van in DC:

Wonderful show so far Charlie - thanks! Gotta run, work calls (conducting a technical interview). Hopefully I can fire up my can again later in the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm charlie:

Me too, Bob
Thanks Van, see you later
  12:57pm Carmichael:

I just found out about Office Naps. It's a great site.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm charlie:

got a few Morricone-related numbers here...
  1:07pm don:

elated
  1:07pm seang:

too many choices on FMU these days--and it's all good
  1:10pm Carmichael:

I just recently noticed the total Morricone-ness of Scott Walker's The Old Man's Back Again.
  1:12pm jan:

Charlie- what are we to make of this music featured in the Times. The D.J. Deadmau5

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/05/business/media/electronic-dance-genre-tempts-investors.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&ref=todayspaper&adxnnlx=1333645845-amT7gt8R2h6oeorPSaBg2A
  1:16pm northguineahills:

Actually around for Charlie's show today! Good stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm charlie:

Hi northguineahills!
Well, Jan, I know I'm not tempting any investors here!
  1:19pm Laura L:

The inimitable Bob Dorough--thanks, Charlie. Anyone know if the docu film that was in the works on Bob D. came to fruition?
  1:22pm Vicki:

herro
  1:23pm Vicki:

I heart Dim Dim
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm charlie:

hulloo!
  1:24pm Vicki:

first heard him on YOUR show!
  1:24pm Michael:

Came back to my desk to Dim Dim - love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm charlie:

Yes, I'm his biggest fan :)
I love the way he manipulates those wordless vocal sounds, among a hundred other things...
  1:26pm Vicki:

I can listen to his album Kiwi all day back to back
  1:27pm Katya:

Thanks! Smiling ear to ear. Love this record -- and all Blondie albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm charlie:

Hi Katya!
Kiwi is one of my fave albums!
  1:29pm jan:

I lost your signal! did the string snap? I listen using Sonos and it just went dead.
I tuned in on my iPhone and got Diane's Kamikaze Fun Machine....what gives?
  1:30pm Katya:

Sorry so late. Jumped into work and forgot the date! Here's hoping you folks are all well.
  1:30pm northguineahills:

This Yo La Tengo Song destroys me.....
  1:31pm jan:

receiving now on iTunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm charlie:

ok, good, Jan, glad the iTunes string is hooked up!
  1:33pm Carmichael:

Is this a play on the Pynchon book The Crying of Lot 49?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm charlie:

Yeah, northguineahills, me too
  1:39pm ndbob:

I was thinking that it was Carmichael... I'm currently rereading V.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm charlie:

must be, Bob. Did you ever hear the Insect Trust song that takes its lyrics from a lyric in V. -- "the Eyes of a New York Woman"?
  1:41pm ndbob:

Yep Charlie.. from a great LP.
  1:43pm ndbob:

There's also a Mimi and Richard Farina instrumental called "V" .. wasn't Farina Pynchon's roommate at Cornell, or an I thinking of someone else?
  1:46pm Carmichael:

Correctamundo, Bob. He mentioned it in the dedication to Gravity's Rainbow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm charlie:

Yah, Bob, I believe Pynchon wrote an introduction to one of Richard Farina's novels
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm charlie:

Ladies and gentlemen -- Nels Cline guitar solo!
  1:56pm northguineahills:

Great set Charlie, see you next week!
  1:57pm Carmichael:

Thanks, Charlie!
  1:57pm Katya:

A good mix for Braodcast to make an appearance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm charlie:

Thanks everyone for dropping by today -- see you next week!
  1:58pm ndbob:

excellent show Charlie!
  1:59pm still b/p:

Enjoyed the show from Cannes Phone Festival.
  2:01pm Michael:

I CAN only second what everyone said - great stuff charlie!
  2:02pm listener james from westwood:

didn't want to leave the room at any moment during this show. really hit the spot.
  2:08pm Van in DC:

Rats. Just got back.
  6:43pm Dino Dave:

Wow Charlie, this is GOOD radio! I've just been turned on to you by Shaun Deane.
