Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am
Amanda:

Look! My show description is new!
  11:55am
listener james from westwood:

ah, spring, the perfect time for new descriptions!
hello and good wednesday all!
  11:58am
glenn!:

holy moly! it is! excellent!
  12:01pm
SteveL:

Its too beautiful outside to work today. Good thing I don't have windows in my office. All the better to Nazario by.
  12:02pm
Lizardner Dave:

Since I still can't listen to the alternate streams at work I am going to listen to the archive of last week's show while having this week's playlist in my browser. I may do this every week until I can figure out how to listen live again. Trippy, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm
Amanda:

Good morrow to you all, lJfW and "glenn!" and Lizardner Dave and SteveL! And everyone else. Yes, windows definitely important today. Liz. Dave, that is pretty far-out and you are blowing my mind.
  12:03pm
Carmichael:

Good morning Amanda and alternate-ers. The Count Bishops sound like something Lula and Sailor would jump around in the desert to.
  12:04pm
glenn!:

nyah nyah. i got quote marks and youse guyses didn't. nyah nyah.
  12:04pm
SteveL:

Carmichael: "Rockin' good news!"
  12:05pm
SteveL:

glenn: Does that make you"ironic" [finger quotes]
  12:06pm
Carmichael:

Dave, you can listen to FMU but not the alternate streams? If that's the case, it's probably software related, i.e. you don't have Quicktime or WinAmp. See if you can download something without the administrators knowing.
  12:06pm
glenn!:

ummmm yes? i don't know?
  12:09pm
Carmichael:

This sounds like the Spanic Boys or Dave Edmunds. Pretty neat. Didn't think the Fairies had it in 'em.
  12:09pm
Lizardner Dave:

@Carmichael - tried downloading software, can't do it. Don't have admin rights on my machine since the office gave us new ones about a month ago. Been listening to Amanda on archive ever since. Figured listening to an old show during a new one would be fun especially since I will get confused every time I look at the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Amanda:

@Carmichael -- you can see the appeal that Pink Fairies would hold for the likes of me, then...
  12:13pm
Doug S.:

@Lizardner Dave
If you have an iPhone, there is a special Drummer Stream option on the WFMU app...
  12:14pm
Carmichael:

Maybe Doug can put up an alternate stream type for the software-deprived. pls files aren't really the norm for IBM computers anyway. I listen to FMU on the windows feed or flash beta. This is the only time I use Quicktime, which I loaded from a CD.
  12:14pm
glenn!:

well, they're pink and they're fairies. is that about right?
  12:15pm
Carmichael:

I just mindlessly volunteered Doug for extra work: "Wouldn't it be nice if Doug would ..."
  12:15pm
SteveL:

Hey, if Doug isn't here then he's fair game.
  12:17pm
Winston Smith:

He's ALWAYS here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
Amanda:

He's here! Look busy!
  12:17pm
Danne D:

Hey everyone :)

@Dave - I actually listen on my computer via itunes of all things believe it or not.

Hey Amanda :) Looking forward to your usual excellent show
  12:19pm
Rich Z., Nutley, NJ:

Snap…my Nazarialarm clock is still set to Eastern Standard Time…what did I miss?
  12:19pm
Doug S.:

Doug is here, Carmichael. Doug is unemployed with no life. Other than endeavoring to make you happy, of course.
  12:19pm
Danne D:

SO GOOD! SO GOOD! SO GOOD!
  12:20pm
Van in DC:

@Danne - iTunes, really? "Radio" or "Apps"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Amanda:

Best job ever, Doug -- and you are overqualified for it!

Danne, my sentiments exactly.

Hi Record Rich! Don't worry, you can catch up. Hope you were catching your lost hour of sleep just then.
  12:21pm
Carmichael:

As I said, Doug, it was a "mindless" suggestion. Hitting Enter causes that realization.
  12:22pm
Lizardner Dave:

Thanks everyone. I live a Jobs-free existence. No iTunes account, no iPhone. I do have a Droid with the WFMU app but the speaker on the phone sounds even worse than my work PC speakers and it wouldn't be good if I wore headphones in the office. I'm kind of digging the time warp thing actually.
  12:24pm
Danne D:

@Dave - can you rig the speakers to work with the Droid phone? :)
  12:24pm
listener james from westwood:

Question to those running the iPod/Pad WFMU listening app: Does listening live use up your data plan minutes/credits/whatever? My phone is slowly dying, and the ability to listen to FMU sans blasting thru my monthly allotment would be nice while away from the bunker.
  12:25pm
glenn!:

huh. has jerry lee lewis ever done an elo song? that's your answer right there.
  12:26pm
Carmichael:

James, maybe you could find a wired homeless guy to hang around your work. That would solve everything. Even your employment status.
  12:26pm
Doug S.:

@Listener James from Westwood
That is an excellent question. I have always wondered and refrained from streaming WFMU on my iPhone unless absolutely necessary. Please, someone answer LJFW's query!
  12:30pm
listener james from westwood:

That SXSW story def. fell into the "not an Onion piece" category.
  12:30pm
Danne D:

@Dave - I am otherwise Jobs-free myself. It was from a desperation to hear this exact show that I flailed in desperation and came upon this solution :)
  12:32pm
mchuge:

Aww, reggae and fried plantains!
  12:33pm
efd:

Hi Amanda and Amandites! I'd think that using the iPhone app would definitely count towards your data usage since the stream is basically data.
  12:33pm
Danne D:

@James - I'm not one of the pad/pod-people - I'm using the itunes program on my pc - sorry I can't be more helpful.

I have sprint so the limit wouldn't be an issue but my increasingly obsolete palm pre is more the obstacle ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
Amanda:

Hi mchuge! I know, it's definitely time for fried plantains and coconut water. And hi efd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Amanda:

Now that you can play Angry Birds on Facebook, I really don't need a smart phone for anything. The WFMU mobile app excluded, of course!!!
  12:41pm
Eugene:

The WFMU mobile app was the first thing I downloaded when I got a smart phone.
  12:43pm
SteveL:

Ooo, learning stuff. Never realized "Black and WHite" dated back to Brown vs. Board of Education. Neat! (and great version by Greyhound.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_and_White_%28Three_Dog_Night_song%29
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
Amanda:

SteveL -- I know! I was just on that very wikipedia page last night.

Hi Eugene! It may prove to be the same with me, if I ever get one. Which I know I should.
  12:46pm
listener james from westwood:

efd, you're probably right. i can't imagine vz or at&t giving away a free lunch like that.
  12:50pm
SteveL:

OK, its getting harder to work. Too much bouncing means bad typing form.
  12:51pm
Danne D:

I love your radio bumpers Amanda :) a nice way to roll into your back-announcing
  12:56pm
Danne D:

A 3rd funky thing: Evan "Funk" Davies
  12:57pm
ndbob:

afternoon Amanda and everyone!
  1:04pm
SteveL:

OK, really. How am I supposed to get any work done while jumping around the office? My co workers don't seem to understand mosh-pit etiquette.
  1:07pm
mchuge:

This New Order cover is completely spectacular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Amanda:

Hey ndbob!

SteveL, I'm not saying you need to look for another job, but...*

*Please don't actually look for another job based on this comment

I saw them a few times in upstate NY. Good times.

was never a huge TMBG fan, but i bought "Lincoln" on cassette when it came out and played the stuffing out of it.

pgw -- Certain of their songs always kill me, and that is one!
  1:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey EVERYBODY!!!!
AND THANK YOU CARM!!! I was cut off from streaming at my work for like a year now, Winamp disabled. But when you mentioned QuickTime, I found there WAS a copy on my computer! So now I can LISTEN LIVE!!
  1:26pm
pgw in mntclr:

yeah, that's a good one... and i appreciate it more now because i'm old enough to enjoy jim beam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Amanda:

Fortuitous indeed, Matt from Springfield! Welcome!!!
  1:27pm
mchuge:

Speaking of TMBG, what happened to Ween?
  1:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

Glad to be here, Amanda!
This opens up not just this show, but all the GTDS programs and stream music! A wonderful day indeed!
  1:32pm
Hillary:

They'll Need a Crane is what made me get my sister to buy me my first TMBG album when I was 10.
  1:32pm
listener james from westwood:

not usually a video-type guy, but the vid for "someone to love" has a truly depressing (but entirely fitting) ending.
  1:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

Pop On Top! The Cream of Australia's Power Pop Crop! Sounds so much better when you say it out loud!
  1:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Windows Media streams were horribly unreliable at my work, so I "not-so-licitly" installed Winamp on my computer. Then network policy disabled that, and other streams. Ike pointed me to the Flash player, that's been the only thing that works...but since QT is already installed, I've found my workaround!
  1:35pm
glenn!:

wouldn't bat eared be a more apt avine / hearing analogy?
  1:40pm
Danne D:

dang it :( I missed a good set - gotta time these lunches better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Amanda:

Hillary -- haha, good job on the sibling manipulation!

glenn(!), yeah probably. Eagles have good ears too, I'm hoping.
  1:42pm
Danne D:

Hooray Matt :)
  1:44pm
glenn!:

from baldeagleinfo.com -
Hearing
Eagles are not distinguished for their hearing, but this does not mean that they have poor hearing. Diurnal (active by day) birds of prey like hawks and eagles use their hearing to locate prey or other birds, but the sharpness is not as essential as in some owls, which can locate prey in the dark only by their sound.
  1:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yes, Danne! Great karma--I pledge to this show, suddenly I can hear it! :)
  1:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

Esther Phillips was great--first I heard of her. Come to think, the type on this playlist is a dark, Bing cherry red. Any reason for this color scheme Amanda? I like colors, and the first time I saw your selection I think of silver and red wine. Chalicey, goblety...
  1:53pm
listener james from westwood:

must nick out to the gym; loved the 1st 2/3 and looking forward to listening to the final third of the show later on! have a fabbo day, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Amanda:

Interesting question, Matt -- I think I just went for favorite colors. Grey, burgundy, blue are all colors I like to wear, if that sheds any light on the subject.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Amanda:

I don't go in much for chalices, I have to say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
Amanda:

See ya, Listener James!
  1:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

Grey and blue can look drab and frozen--perhaps the burgundy makes it a warmer feel, and the bits of blue in hyperlinks provides some variety to the picture.

As a cartographer I see these things everywhere I look!
  2:00pm
efd:

@Matt, interesting that you mention the frozen aspect of grey and blue - I switched my playlist colors to that scheme for the winter schedule back in December.

Also, you're the second cartographer I know of who's a regular WFMU listener.
  2:02pm
Danne D:

@efd I envision the cartographers camping out at the marathon map during the marathon
  2:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

Short and sweet from Christine McVie. Very nice.
Also wonderful Strawbs, I don't normally listen to mid-70s era Strawbs but that song was so lush and mysterious, loved it!
  2:03pm
Danne D:

@EFD - I may be picking a new name for my team (though New Jersey Knuckles is a classic so it'll be something good). I will resist the urge to call them the Hub City Hunks though :D
  2:04pm
Danne D:

Depends on the strands of life how inclined I'd be to get them together - really not inclined to mix the day job with anything else.

Yay for Amanda singing :)
  2:06pm
ndbob:

i need to go - excellent show Amanda - and great to hear you sing!
  2:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Evan: Yes, that's a frozen combo indeed--dark blue and light bluish grey. I'm trying to remember which colors you had before, the background was darker than the text, right?

Cartographers slowing lining up behind WFMU! Who is the other one? I may have chatted with him/her before.
  2:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Found at least one of them, Aaron in Chicago!
"aaron in chicago: you too, matt? you wouldn't happen to have better mozambique gazetteer data than what's available on the NGA geonet names server?" Geography. Hardcore. :)
  2:17pm
efd:

@Danne, do what you feel!

@Matt, check out carticulatemaps.com - the listener I was thinking of is one of the co-founders. My summer schedule playlist was a combo of yellow and orange, in keeping with the season. :)

@Evan: That's right, yellow text on orange. And the same slightly different font.
And that's a cool site, visualizing information is their focus, and that's basically what we're all about.
  2:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

Also it was fun to hear about your past, Evan "TMBG" Davies! ;)
  2:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Amanda: Monkees' "I'm A Believer"! Urge Overkill's "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon"! Altered Images' "Song Sung Blue", quick, pull more out! 35 more minutes!

the skydiggers do a great caroline. oh, and chris isaak's solitary man.

Wow, I imagine Chris Isaak would do a great "Solitary Man".
  2:28pm
glenn!:

you've never heard it?
  2:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

@glenn!: I assume you're still excited about Amanda's new show description from earlier? :)

I know Neil D's version well, haven't heard Chris Isaak's.

i'm just excited about amanda's show in general! there was a playlist a few weeks back where every comment was followed by an exclamation mark!
  2:33pm
Danne D:

I agree, glenn!
  2:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks glenn(!)!
Apparently that was a hit in '93, I was only 8 at the time and probably missed that one. I'll watch it. Later, obviously. :)

they don't play that song at the games anymore, unfortunately.

'Psychomania' is a great movie starring George Sanders and featuring a frog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm

Whoa. I wonder if the Strawbs owe something to this movie for "The Golden Salamander."
  2:44pm
Danne D:

LOL - D'antoni resigned from the Knicks. Isiah Thomas already trending on twitter :)
  2:46pm
Danne D:

@glenn! :( maybe they'll bring it back since they went back to more retro-ish jerseys? :)

My next band will be called The Cartographers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm

Pleased to see you, Brian! Thanks for popping in. What, this? No... are you listening to the other webstream? Or maybe (more likely) making a joke that's going over my head? :-)
  2:52pm
efd:

And some former Strawbs members made a pretty decent quaisi-satrical punk album under the name The Monks (no relation to the better-known '60s band).
  2:55pm

I'm confused Amanda. No joke, just been making cakes badly, in a bad humour.

The Kool & the Gang bit confused me. I'm sure someone else can fill me in though! Is there any way to make a cake badly? (Actually, I remember trying to make a cake in my dorm's oven in college, so don't answer that)
  3:00pm

uhhhhh. mistaking salt for sugar is a pretty good way to make a cake badly.
