	1:25pm Nathan: @Duane Oh that makes sense then. That's a lot of digging. @Kat330 I was raised on it and therefore it's always going to have a place in my heart. I was only 3 when the Kaminsky Park 'disco sucks' thing went off but I remember watching it on the news asking my dad why people were so upset over a 'type' of music not realising the homophobic / racist undertones to the whole fiasco. I also agree with the 'message' of inclusiveness and love in the face of adversity. Not to mention the outright if sometimes cheesy eroticism. Fun, uplifting music for the downtrodden. You don't really get those messages coming across in music nowadays... and I think they're still important.

	1:33pm Cecile: I think the problem was that while there was a racist/homophobic segment of the anti-disco people, there were just as many old-school soul and rock people who were tired of it and they got swept up in the wave. When the heartland went disco, they went all out. And the backlash was just as heated. I was a teen when disco came 'round, and while there are gobs of tracks I loved then and love now, it would have been nice to hear something besides that on AM radio. Legs McNeil even said in an In the case of disco, the baby got thrown out with the bathwater. A lot of singers and musicians had more to offer, but since they got tarred with that brush, it ended things for them.

I'll admit, i was solidly in the "disco sucks" camp back in the day, and the recent resurgence of it on FMU has made me do a lot of examining my attitude those days, and now. Still not my fave kind of music, but if I can make room for skronk and for murder ballads, I can surely make room for this.

It did take me about 15 years to be able to listen to Fleetwood Mac's Rumors again.

I'd only thought it had been given a very wide mass appeal through the white and straight "Saturday Night Fever" vehicle. But I'm also not one for "house music" as a listen -- it's for movement.
	1:38pm Cecile: I remember people talking about "discos" in the 60s, but references to disco music didnt' start showing up outside NYC til late 74, early 75.

	1:40pm Parq: 'Cile, true. When Hurrah first started advertising itself as "The Rock Disco", lots of people thought that was a contradiction in terms.
	1:40pm kat330: The "disco dancin' fool" era for me was 4-5 months in the beginning of 1978 in L.A. Glad to have had that life experience (even if I was hassled by the doormen almost every time for wearing ballet shoes and their liability concerns :).
	1:41pm Parq: Not for nothing, but even Tom Wolfe took note that the homoerotic roots of disco music were rather lost on "Mom and Dad and Buddy and Sis climbing into the Bonneville" to go to Disco night at their local Episcopal church.
	1:43pm Cecile: I liked the way dance music was really mixed up from around 81-85. There weren't enough records to wall off genres so you'd hear pop records, rock records, danceable experimenting, New Wave when you went out dancing.

	1:47pm slugluv1313: YES YES!!!! in the 1960s, one would always read references to these fabulous discotheques! places where people would go dancing to all types of music -- but the disco "style" of music really did not start to happen until maybe 1974? and from what i have been told by those who hung out at the time, originated in the gay male discotheques -- and yup! this was TOTALLY lost on middle America!
	1:47pm Cecile: Parq, isn't it funny how both rabid music fans and angry censorious moralists both tend to know the roots of music between than the average listener? Both know that jazz was born in bordellos, that rock was a soundtrack for sexing and disco was born out of the gay movements. The former think it's cool, the latter not so much.

	1:55pm Caryn: Went to see the Village People movie at the movie archive some years ago. Sitting in the audience, I was reminded of John Waters' words about one of his movie screenings: "You could tell who was gay in the audience based on who got which joke and who didn't." Exactly the same experience.
	1:58pm Nathan: I was/am also into the Circle Jerks. Seen them live more than a few times when I lived in SoCal. I could see in hindsight that disco reached the point of over-saturation. There was a long stretch where I wouldn't even touch the stuff. But I've started collecting it again in the past 10 years or so... and it's become a staple in my diet amongst several other genres.. @Kat330 If anything I only get offended when other people get offended. I'd love to chat more with you guys but I've gotta date to get ready for!
	1:58pm Parq: What I remember about the VP is how, aside from the homphiles who dug them and the homophobes who reviled them, there was a large middle group who simply put on blinders about their "gayness" because they thought they were cute. They now routinely play "YMCA" at every heartland wedding reception and grade-school dance in the country.

	2:04pm Caryn: @Parq: a newspaper columnist wrote about a year ago about his country childhood, and about how he and his best friends would fight in the schoolyard about who got to be which member of the VP in their games. No-one was aware of any "gay" connotations. Watching old Hollywood movies, it's fun to spot the gay innuendo that the average viewer missed. As well as the gay innuendo that people got back in the day, but is not understood today.

And that the problem is that we have a bunch of old white guys trying to legislate how contraception should be available, when these same guys are making it clear they don't understand how the thing they are trying to control works.

Knowing women who use the pill to keep their frigging cancer at bay, not to mentions slews of other women who use the pill for other serious medical problems, it infuriates me to no end. Yeah, let's see Rush have a period for 3 months straight, and consequently lose his hair and develop severe anemia, because taking a prescribed pill would apparently make him a "slut".

The insurance companies actually want to give free contraception because it saves them money by avoiding unwanted pregnancies. Talk about a no-brainer. The people who oppose it are also no-brainers.

	3:05pm Caryn: @kat: actually, our female president was known more as a mother figure. They nicknamed her Moomin Momma, after the children's lit character. Then again, she was also an experienced politician and lawyer, the former head of the Finnish version of GLAAD, and a single mother when she took office. But I do think with the "mother" image, they just used a part of the virgin/mother/whore trio to brand her. So the cultural paradigm remains.

	1:25pm Nathan: @Duane Oh that makes sense then. That's a lot of digging. @Kat330 I was raised on it and therefore it's always going to have a place in my heart. I was only 3 when the Kaminsky Park 'disco sucks' thing went off but I remember watching it on the news asking my dad why people were so upset over a 'type' of music not realising the homophobic / racist undertones to the whole fiasco. I also agree with the 'message' of inclusiveness and love in the face of adversity. Not to mention the outright if sometimes cheesy eroticism. Fun, uplifting music for the downtrodden. You don't really get those messages coming across in music nowadays... and I think they're still important.

	1:33pm Cecile: I think the problem was that while there was a racist/homophobic segment of the anti-disco people, there were just as many old-school soul and rock people who were tired of it and they got swept up in the wave. When the heartland went disco, they went all out. And the backlash was just as heated. I was a teen when disco came 'round, and while there are gobs of tracks I loved then and love now, it would have been nice to hear something besides that on AM radio. Legs McNeil even said in an In the case of disco, the baby got thrown out with the bathwater. A lot of singers and musicians had more to offer, but since they got tarred with that brush, it ended things for them.

It did take me about 15 years to be able to listen to Fleetwood Mac's Rumors again.

	1:40pm Parq: 'Cile, true. When Hurrah first started advertising itself as "The Rock Disco", lots of people thought that was a contradiction in terms.
	1:40pm kat330: The "disco dancin' fool" era for me was 4-5 months in the beginning of 1978 in L.A. Glad to have had that life experience (even if I was hassled by the doormen almost every time for wearing ballet shoes and their liability concerns :).
	1:41pm Parq: Not for nothing, but even Tom Wolfe took note that the homoerotic roots of disco music were rather lost on "Mom and Dad and Buddy and Sis climbing into the Bonneville" to go to Disco night at their local Episcopal church.
	1:43pm Cecile: I liked the way dance music was really mixed up from around 81-85. There weren't enough records to wall off genres so you'd hear pop records, rock records, danceable experimenting, New Wave when you went out dancing.

	1:47pm slugluv1313: YES YES!!!! in the 1960s, one would always read references to these fabulous discotheques! places where people would go dancing to all types of music -- but the disco "style" of music really did not start to happen until maybe 1974? and from what i have been told by those who hung out at the time, originated in the gay male discotheques -- and yup! this was TOTALLY lost on middle America!
	1:47pm Cecile: Parq, isn't it funny how both rabid music fans and angry censorious moralists both tend to know the roots of music between than the average listener? Both know that jazz was born in bordellos, that rock was a soundtrack for sexing and disco was born out of the gay movements. The former think it's cool, the latter not so much.

Sitting in the audience, I was reminded of John Waters' words about one of his movie screenings: "You could tell who was gay in the audience based on who got which joke and who didn't." Exactly the same experience.
	1:58pm Nathan: I was/am also into the Circle Jerks. Seen them live more than a few times when I lived in SoCal. I could see in hindsight that disco reached the point of over-saturation. There was a long stretch where I wouldn't even touch the stuff. But I've started collecting it again in the past 10 years or so... and it's become a staple in my diet amongst several other genres.. @Kat330 If anything I only get offended when other people get offended. I'd love to chat more with you guys but I've gotta date to get ready for!
	1:58pm Parq: What I remember about the VP is how, aside from the homphiles who dug them and the homophobes who reviled them, there was a large middle group who simply put on blinders about their "gayness" because they thought they were cute. They now routinely play "YMCA" at every heartland wedding reception and grade-school dance in the country.

No-one was aware of any "gay" connotations. Watching old Hollywood movies, it's fun to spot the gay innuendo that the average viewer missed. As well as the gay innuendo that people got back in the day, but is not understood today.

Yeah, let's see Rush have a period for 3 months straight, and consequently lose his hair and develop severe anemia, because taking a prescribed pill would apparently make him a "slut".

	3:05pm Caryn: @kat: actually, our female president was known more as a mother figure. They nicknamed her Moomin Momma, after the children's lit character. Then again, she was also an experienced politician and lawyer, the former head of the Finnish version of GLAAD, and a single mother when she took office. But I do think with the "mother" image, they just used a part of the virgin/mother/whore trio to brand her. So the cultural paradigm remains.
