	11:08am Caryn: All about Adidas, Pumas & Reeboks here! Of course, since Adidas and Puma were both founded by the Dassler brothers, I always consider those two brands to be kin to one another.
	11:08am Cecile: Yep. that's why I loved them. They, the Meat Puppets and 'mats made me embrace my midwestern thrift store aesthetic.

	11:11am Cecile: it really wasn't a real aesthetic. It was mostly dressing for warmth. I remember wearing a collared sweater with a turtleneck under it with an ancient black cordurory trench over cause I was too poor for down coats, and a couple of people freaked out over my "vintage" style. FOTC had a running joke on their show what their vintage style was: "clothes."
	11:12am Cecile: I was shocked at the 'mats because they actually looked like me and my friends. Everyone bought flannel shirts cause they were cheap and warm.

On the other hand, we are all computer-adept, we have self-appointed (comments board) monikers, we have a uniform (WFMU t-shirts), and many of us believe Yo La Tengo will come hidden in the tail of a comet to lead us to freeform radio paradise, so...

	11:17am Cecile: yeah, sbp. I think I had a problem with the "Our Band Could Be Our Life," cause the author wasn't from the Midwest. So much of getting Big Black, the 'mats, etc came from as the mats put it being stuck in the middle. And you could be in the middle on both coasts, as long as you were stuck somewhere you didn't want to be.

	11:26am Caryn: @Adam: damn straight. If you can do "disturbingly androgenous" well, it's magic. Todd Haynes & a university lecturer of mine both once made the same point: it is much easier to handle someone being clearly other in an easily definable way. But keeping things ambivalent is often much more disturbing for people, but also way more interesting. Todd Haynes said it about Bowie's androgeny, the lecturer about The Smiths' androgeny and ambivalence.

Todd Haynes & a university lecturer of mine both once made the same point: it is much easier to handle someone being clearly other in an easily definable way. But keeping things ambivalent is often much more disturbing for people, but also way more interesting.
