It's OK to be a little late for work on a holiday, no?

Haunted House up for grabs for a minimum pledge. So so killer, I want in.
  3:17pm
pierre:

How can I pledge through an smartphone? Is it possible?
  3:18pm
jonathan:

great scotts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
Scott McDowell:

Yeah, if it has a web browser on it. Head on over to WFMU.org and put in your info. Alternatively you can email your pledge to me scottm@wfmu.org with the amt and I'll write up a pledge card for you and announce it on-air.
  3:19pm
KP:

Call in i guess. My iphone would allow me to make the web browser big enough but it would be difficult.

if you don't support wfmu, you support child pornographers.
  3:31pm
dc pat:

well said glenn...
  3:31pm
Caryn:

Love the Scotts talking about pledging, while the "people who need people are the luckiest people in the world" point of the song plays in the background. Does that mean WFMU are the luckiest for needing their pledgers? Or that the listeners are the luckiest for needing their WFMU fix?
@glenn: oh, please don't morph into a politician...
  3:33pm
kat330:

Question: On the mouse pledge is it either adopt a DJ or select premiums or?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Scott W:

Hi everyone!!! There will be a goal amount on the page when we figure out what the goal should be. Sticking our toes in now, sit tight...
  3:37pm
kat330:

Hello?
  3:38pm
Mary Wing:

kat330, you get it all!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Scott W:

Mouse pledgers definitely get the 7 DJ premiums -- only 1 person can adopt me, and it;'s gotta be a paid $365 pledge, I'm still available! www.flickr.com...
  3:40pm
kat330:

Ohhh, thanks, Mary! Hm, so if we mouse pledged in December and didn't adopt a DJ, did we lose our chance? [as newbies at that level, we hadn't known about the "adopt-a" program. :)
  3:41pm
dc pat:

great cover..
  3:42pm
glenn:

it's a great song, full stop.
  3:43pm
Bas, NL:

That's going to be a great Premium :D
  3:44pm
dc pat:

glenn: just coming to that realization. I just heard it so many times it kind of goes in one ear and out the other.
  3:44pm
Mary Wing:

kat, the adoptions only occur at marathon time, so I'm not sure if a December pledge would qualify. Perhaps you can negotiate something with Joe McGasko, our Listener Services Director. Thanks for your pledge, no matter when you made it!
  3:46pm
kat330:

We just wanted to do it as soon as we had it available. Live and learn! :)
  3:47pm
glenn:

jimmy webb is sublime.
  3:47pm
Bas, NL:

Happy, happy, happy!!!
  3:48pm
Caryn:

@kat: Did you divide your mouse pledge among a lot of DJs? Or not mention a DJ at all? Since if you actually pledged it all to one DJ and that DJ is still available for adoption, negotiations with Joe might be easier...
  3:50pm
kat330:

Hey, Caryn, long time no type. It was a case of I got a small inheritance in mid-December, immediately made up a donations list of worthy recipients, and FMU was near the top, of course. We got all the premiums -- most excellent! -- but didn't know of the DJ dingus.
  3:52pm
kat330:

And, nah, I don't want to "negotiate" about it, just wondering if we should have "adopted" instead of the premiums. Maybe another small ship will come in for us by the Fall marathon -- there are adoptions then, too, yes?
  3:55pm
Caryn:

@kat: yeah, I spread my October donation between as many DJs as I could (somewhere between 8-12, I forget). There were no adoptions available then, and I suspect there won't be next fall, either, since all the adoptions are for one year. I'm with you on the "if only I had realised" matter, since I'd love to adopt a DJ, and didn't even realise that would be possible during the marathon. Dagnabbit!
  3:56pm
roman david:

well, that rangers track was super pleasent. does wfmu take british pounds?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Scott McDowell:

Of course roman. I think that works in your favor as well.
  3:57pm
Caryn:

@kat: They might come up with some new fixtures to adopt in the fall, maybe? Unless there are some new DJs introduced when the schedule changes, I suspect no DJ adoptions will be available.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Scott McDowell:

I'm sorry "favour"
  3:58pm
kat330:

New fixtures? Like adopt a new lamp?
  3:59pm
glenn:

+1 for proper spelling, eh.
  4:00pm
Caryn:

@kat: well, looking at the adoption page, there are turntables, paintings etc. up for adoption. Maybe if there is a new addition to the station pets, the pet might come up for adoption?
  4:01pm
kat330:

I wouldn't paws at doing that. I'd spring for a cat.
  4:02pm
PB:

One of the FMU hosts played a version of David Thomas "singing" Sloop John B the other day. It was truly bizarre.
  4:02pm
glenn:

can i adopt andy breckman's nipple piercing, or did he get rid of it?
  4:04pm
kat330:

Though I could have had some fun with this DJ adoption business, I'm glad we pledged as much as we could as soon as we could. Now, you folks who haven't, YOU still have the chance to get your Jay, so go for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Scott McDowell:

Good prizes up right now RANGERS LP and ALVARIUS B. CD for a minimum pldege of $15 you too can be in the running.
  4:06pm
dc pat:

what is this? the super marathon, amazing cover show?
  4:08pm
Mary Wing:

The adoptions are a bonus "prize" tied to this marathon, not the fundraiser at the end of the year. So now you can plan for next year, when *I* may be up for adoption as well. :-)
  4:12pm
kat330:

I'll put that in my daybook for February 2013: Possibly up for adoption, The Wind Cries Mary Little Wing. :)

  4:28pm
kat330:

Yes, a quite wonderful flick, Night of the Hunter.
  4:29pm
Night of the Iguana:

You just keep telling yourself that.
  4:30pm
Caryn:

"Night of the Hunter" is a fine example of a first-time director hitting it out of the park. Of course, when that director is Charles Laughton, you can expect greatness, but still.
  4:30pm
Scuttle:

WORST hiding spot for money though.
  4:30pm
Night of the Living Dead:

Bite me.
  4:31pm
kat330:

Okay, sure, another wonderful film.
  4:34pm
Caryn:

Plenty of fine "Night..." movies, but if "A Night at the Roxbury" dares pipe up, it's gonna get smacked upside the head. Because that was crap.
  4:34pm
kat330:

I meant that for NotI, but I'll double down on NofLD.

Wendy O. Williams Bobblehead + Criterion DVD Night of the Hunter up for grabs right now.

I like this Apocalypse. What other Israeli bands come to mind worth checking out?

Missed train because of holiday sked but also due to that another came along quickly. I'm "in" so can relax. Scott is great for train rides.
  4:46pm
glenn:

the churchills are an israeli psyche band from the late sixties.
  4:49pm
kat330:

Speaking of Night of the Hunter, J.T. just arrived home and announced it's the 7th anniversary of Hunter S. Thompson's death. [and we just viewed Rum Diary yesterday]
  4:51pm
Mike East:

Hey kat330, how was Rum Diary?
  4:53pm
kat330:

Um, what's the "if you've nothing nice to say?" The trailer spoiled the most humorous moment, but don't they always?
  4:54pm
kat330:

Oh, I know: It was very colorful - bright Puerto Rican colors.
  4:55pm
dc pat:

FUCK! oh well...
  4:56pm
Caryn:

Other fine "Night" movies: "A Night at the Opera", "La Notte", "The Night Digger", "Night Ambush", "Night Nurse", "The Night of the Shooting Stars", "The Night My Number Came Up", "Night Train to Munich" and "Nights of Cabiria".

Also worth a watch: "Night After Night", "Night Gallery", 1956 "Nightfall", 1937 "Night Must Fall", both "Night in the City" films, "Night Moves", "Night Club Scandal", "Night Creatures", "Night, Mother", "Night on Earth", "Night Monster", "A Night to Remember", "The Night Walker", "Night Sun" and "Night World".
  4:57pm
Caryn:

Oops, forgot "It Happened One Night" from the good movies.

  4:58pm

@kat330 - the trailer did not look great, to me- so I've been prepared to be dissappointed. I shall wait for the DVD.
  4:58pm
dc pat:

jeezus H. keerist, how do you make enough time to see that many movies with the word "Night" in the title? Not busting, just jealous...
  4:58pm

Night of the Hunted, Jean Rollin. Crazy.
  4:59pm

  5:00pm
Caryn:

@dc pat: and those are just the good ones I could come up with. Plenty of bad and middling "Night" movies too...
  5:00pm
dc pat:

ah, ya see? I knew there was a reason.. I use to work in the media department of a local university library and I watched films on every lunch break.
  5:01pm
Caryn:

@MK: ooh, how did I forget that?!?
  5:02pm
dc pat:

mike in dc: same here. Scott always pulls dough outta me.
kitty: oh yeah, just watched HDN with my daughter and she claimed it was the best movie EVAR!
  5:03pm
dc pat:

another great cover...
  5:03pm
kat330:

@Caryn: You stayed in the N's of your reference source? :)
  5:04pm
Caryn:

Has anyone ever seen the remake of "Night of the Hunter" starring Richard Chamberlain? I suspect he wasn't as creepy as Mitchum...
  5:05pm
Caryn:

@kat: stayed in the Ns in my list of DVDs I own?
  5:05pm
Roee R:

Hi, Scott - the Apocalypse song from your premium is actually titled "Under the Eucalyptus Tree." Like all the songs on this album, music was written by eccentric drummer Zohar Levy, shortly after he contributed the music for the most controversial play in Israeli theater history, the biting political satire "The Queen of the Bath-Tub" by playwright Hanoch Levin (who wrote the lyrics for some of the songs on this truly unique album, though not this particular song, the words of which are by the poet Haim Heffer). The guitar player here is the same as the lead guitar of "The Churchills," Yitzhak Klepter (whose nickname was Churchill).
  5:06pm
KP:

Wow who's doing dear god? And where am I?
  5:07pm
dc pat:

ach! Why does anyone need to "remake" an already perfect movie? Mitchum was fantastic in that film.. My wife refuses to even look at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm

  5:09pm

hey!!
  5:10pm
kat330:

Unfortunately our filing system isn't alphabetical here -- more what we have seen and what we haven't yet had time to, and that's grouped in genres.
  5:10pm
KP:

Caryn, since you like Irene and Scott it's obvious you know of the finer things in this little world.
  5:10pm
kim:

just forgot to write that my pledge is part of a "mousy"
  5:11pm
Caryn:

All the tracks I've heard from "Scottify" so far have been awesome! Dammit, now I'm gonna have to dig up some money over the next 2 weeks.
@KP: thanks! Have you seen "Night Sun"? It's from the same directors. Not as good, but still very watchable.
  5:12pm
kat330:

Gotta love the Chilton!
  5:12pm
KP:

I noticed in a book of movie reviews that Night was by far the most first word in a title.
  5:14pm
KP:

Now does a mouse pledge also count as an adoption? Asking for a friend.
  5:15pm
Caryn:

@kat: yep, physically, the stuff is organised alphabetically, by genre and by whether or not I've watched it already. The list is just alphabetically and by genre. It's very incomplete, though. Need to add later purchases. But I'll probably do that once I actually have shelves to organise the stuff on, and they're not just in boxes and piles around the apartment.

  5:22pm

ah, c'mon you can get porn for free.....oops, I said too much..

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
Scott McDowell:

Listen to Kat!
  5:31pm
Caryn:

@Scott: no, but based on your description, they do seem to be spending large amounts of money on a regular basis on porn, which seems to suggest a habit

@KP: well, some have been taped or DVR'd off the TV, some are bought. If you saw my apartment, you would not be surprised. Tapes, DVDs, records, books and movie & music magazines cover almost every inch of available space.

Lessons to learn from "Hausu":
1) never leave your watermelon anywhere
2) pianos can be dangerous
3) if your fridge breaks down, get a repairman, STAT
4) it's best to avoid visiting relatives if you are single
  5:56pm
Caryn:

Biggest lesson to learn: deal with your step-parent issues instead of running away from them, because that decision will come back to bite you in the ass.

@G: that does tend to be a common thread in Japanese horror. Nasty pieces of work often get no come-uppance. They just keep on going.
