	10:09am Cecile: I think when artists get paid, they don't have to take jobs other places. Then they can make more art. I try to pay whenever possible because I have done free-lance writing and art, and i know what goes into it. I commission small works from artists when I can. I think there should be freedom, but too many people cop out of honoring the work of artists.

	10:26am glenn: well, here in the great white north, every statistic shows that crime rates are falling, and have been for years, but our current right wing regime says " we don't listen to evidence, we listen to what our voters want". that's a direct quote. this is the justification for new laws and many megaprisons being built.

	10:35am Cecile: yup Most Americans are either in favor of or don't give a rat's ass about gay marriage/partnership. Polls have shown this over and over again. But it still seems to be a hot button issue. Most Americans don't mind higher taxes - IF they are being spent wisely. but it keeps getting turned around and around.
	10:35am glenn: politics is about who gets the money, and that's all. right wingers think corporations and rich folks should get it. liberals more or less think the same way. socialists, like me, think that the working folk should get most of it, since we create most of it.

Where in this society do the people have access to direct dialog with power? The political apparatus of the state has been completely purchased by the corporate tyranny. Blocking access to any dialog or meaningful criticism of their abuse has been a first priority. Direct action is our only option and it thankfully, works.

	11:20am earwax: The US constitution seems to make a point that copyright is not just to promote corporate profits but to promote social utility by promoting useful arts and sciences. Copyright is a legal issue not a moral one. Current copyright laws are one sided and support corporate middlemen over artists and society in general.

	11:21am JT: What does the guest think of the fact that the big content companies are themselves persistent copyright criminals? Even the politicians supporting SOPA have turned out to be illegally using copyrighted photos on their own websites, several times. When SOPA hits the real world, a company with lawyers on staff or retainer have more rights than the rest of us. They get a call to their lawyer. The rest of us get shut down with no recourse. Even something the size of WFMU could get blacked out with no due process.
	11:22am Nathan: He sounds a bit contrarian to me simply for the sake of being contrarian. The MPAA and RIAA and the Chamber of Commerce did essentially write this bill. It was a poor bill, with very wide ranging wording that removed some traditionally legal traditions such as presuming innocence until proven guilty under a court of law. The Megaupload shutdown only proves that the gov't has all the tools necessary to do what it needs to do without creating more laws which could stifle a very young and rapidly growing technology. We don't need further legislation to prop up legacy industries that can't or won't adapt, we need innovation.

The most ominous aspect when considering the affects on our society created by the "war on drugs" is just how much of our freedom and how many of our rights have been compromised over the last 30 or so years under the excuse of the drug war. SOPA has the potential to open up a whole new chapter of the abuse of our rights in the largely untamed digital realm just as the war on drugs has been used to abuse us in the physical realm. Piracy of copyrighted material is simply the new pretext.
	11:30am Dom Chico: One should never underestimate whats capable of a determined soul, and in the end theres more people determined to keep P2P file sharing ALIVE then there are those that are trying to stop it. Money has absolutely no bearing on this issue at all.

There is an issue of copyright violation weather we like it or not that is the fact though, but there is also the fact that others who don't feel the need to create under the larger system that exists are being indirectly effected in this process and it seems that those that are in the "game" for commerce purposes (which is there business) are having there needs taken into consideration more so then others.

While the internet high-fived itself over last week's successful SOPA/PIPA blackout, Chris Ruen protested against the protest. In An Elegy for the Piracy Wars, the Slate Magazine, NY Times and NY Press contributor lamented how sensationalism trumped informed discussion because these proposed laws might not have inherently evil intentions. Even the politicians supporting SOPA have turned out to be illegally using copyrighted photos on their own websites, several times. When SOPA hits the real world, a company with lawyers on staff or retainer have more rights than the rest of us. They get a call to their lawyer. The rest of us get shut down with no recourse. Even something the size of WFMU could get blacked out with no due process.
	11:22am Nathan: He sounds a bit contrarian to me simply for the sake of being contrarian. The MPAA and RIAA and the Chamber of Commerce did essentially write this bill. It was a poor bill, with very wide ranging wording that removed some traditionally legal traditions such as presuming innocence until proven guilty under a court of law. The Megaupload shutdown only proves that the gov't has all the tools necessary to do what it needs to do without creating more laws which could stifle a very young and rapidly growing technology. We don't need further legislation to prop up legacy industries that can't or won't adapt, we need innovation.

The most ominous aspect when considering the affects on our society created by the "war on drugs" is just how much of our freedom and how many of our rights have been compromised over the last 30 or so years under the excuse of the drug war. SOPA has the potential to open up a whole new chapter of the abuse of our rights in the largely untamed digital realm just as the war on drugs has been used to abuse us in the physical realm. Piracy of copyrighted material is simply the new pretext.
