aw, cool, they sang in Sami. I have some records of Wimme - that's how I first learned about the Sami singing style. There are actually some people who are trying to bring back joiking in Upper michigan.

Joiking was big for a couple of years in the late 90s/early 2000s. Big joiking acts and chart-topping records... Then the trend went away. Of course you still hear it, but mostly in the folk circles and of course in Sami society.

Cecile, if you like that & Korpiklaani, you might enjoy a band called Värttinä. Their music is rooted in Carelian women's "poem singing". Very cool stuff. I personally prefer the early records (until "Kokko" in 1996), but the later, more experimental stuff is interesting too.

Funnily enough, Värttinä also co-wrote (with A.R. Rahman) the music for the "Lord of the Rings" musical that was staged in Toronto in the mid-2000s. Have no clue what that music is like, but considering the Finnish roots of much of Tolkien's work, it seemed appropriate.

Yeah, but sometimes the prefix can be helpful. For instance, the Finnish band Rasmus went without the prefix when they sang in Finnish, but used the prefix when singing in English. So it's easy to tell by just looking at the band's name on the record sleeve or concert poster, which language they're gonna be singing in.
