I'm just gonna call the manufacturer's helpline and ask what I should do, since I suspect it's an easy home fix. I'm just worried that the fix will involve a reboot that will wipe the couple of full seasons of good series off the hard drive.

can you not remove the hard drive first then back everything on it to your computer hard drive then put it back in the DVR for the reboot ?

@fxo: No, luckily I get my Boosh via DVD box sets. It's mostly drama series there (but a couple of comedy specials, like the new AbFab and Royle Family).
@Jay: The whole problem with the DVR is that while the hard disc status shows that it's 90 % full, the list of recorded programs is empty. So I have over 300 hours of stuff there I can't access despite various attempts to copy or transfer the hard drive contents.

I managed to get 4 programs off the hard drive this morning via a hookup, but the rest remains strangely trapped.
