Yeay!
  3:00am
fred:

Good morning Julie!
  3:01am
listener mark:

Happy morning to you, Julie !
  3:02am
fred:

Good morning too, fred and mark!
Fred, I'm going to see Nisennenmondai again tonight!
  3:04am
fred von helsing:

Sounds like a plan!
Cranes rewl
  3:04am
Julie:

Good morning Fred & FVH! Hi Mark!
  3:07am
Laurie:

Hey there Julie! I'm BAAACK!!! FINALLY remembered when you're on the air.
  3:07am
ausmanx:

evening Miss Julie and listeners... looks like you're working your way through the whole Author Author album track by track! and a good thing too... the book they took the album title from is cool. and they did a BBC session this year, apparently... god knows what that was like???
  3:09am
Julie:

I have their BBC sessions too, I think I played at least one. Not sure. I LOVE that album as you can tell.
  3:09am
Julie:

Hi Laurie thanks for stopping in!
  3:12am
Julie:

Hiya Aus!
  3:13am
Laurie:

Glad to be here. Just watched some stupid movie that got me all choked up. Not going to sleep after that. LOL I'll hang out with Julie and the Grim Reaper I see ...LOL..for a bit. (Grim Reaper makes me think of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Sorry.) :P
  3:14am
Marmalade kitty:

Hi Julie & everybody!
  3:14am
fred von helsing:

My fave Madonna song !
  3:16am
Julie:

@FVH I decided on a different song than I first thought of @MK hey girl!
  3:18am
Laurie:

I'm ashamed to admit that my first concert was Madonna. (Sorry Madonna lovers, but I'm a metalhead at heart.) My cousin took me to the concert. Our moms didn't know who we were going to see and were horrified when we got home. The Beastie Boys opened for Madonna and the crowd booed them the whole time they were performing. Since you're playing 80's music, do you have any metal over there? I don't have the hair any more but I still know how to head bang. :)
  3:21am
Laurie:

Julie, you are one wild chick---from Madonna to Inkubus Sukkubus. Only on Dark Night of the Soul. Love it! :)
  3:23am
fred:

Julie, do you keep the same slot in the new schedule?
  3:24am
Julie:

I'm all about the weird segue. @Fred no idea. We are supposed to find out today, emphasis on supposed to!
  3:24am
Julie:

I have at least one more week, and I've got Lydia for that show :)
  3:27am
Laurie:

Since we're in the 80's right now, got any INXS? Preferably early INXS. I adore Michael Hutchence. What a voice. Gosh, I miss that man! Beautiful creature.
  3:28am
Julie:

It's my birthday and I am being 100 percent self-indulgent. So not taking request this week, sorry!
  3:30am
Laurie:

Happy Birthday, girl! No problem not taking requests tonight. I'll go over to YouTube later and get to watch him too. Totally indulge yourself. Curious what music you consider indulgent. Have fun! Happy bday! xoxo
  3:34am
Laurie:

I love obscure music like Vanessa Paradis that you just played. Something more pure about it. Once a band goes mainstream they lost some credibility and purity IMHO.
  3:35am
Laurie:

Albums from movies are awesome! I love anything with Tangerine Dream on it. Used to listen to Legend back to back.
  3:35am
fred von helsing:

Who makes the schedules? Is that just Chairman Ken? Or is it Brian Turner? Or the both of them, in some sort of Star Chamber? BWAA-AA-AA !
  3:39am
Sam:

Happy Birthday Dear Julie!!
  3:39am
Who'sOn3rd?:

OhhLaLa. Julie, yours is a voice of velvet
  3:39am
Julie:

Thank you Sam! I think it is like when they choose the pope, smoke and such
  3:40am
Sam:

Ken and Brian Turner choose the Pope?? I knew it!
:)
  3:41am
fred von helsing:

So how come nobody ever uses that great term Panzer Pope any more ???
  3:42am
Julie:

why thank you Who's, and welcome
  3:44am
Laurie:

OMG Only had to hear the first few notes of Tuesday Afternoon and I knew what it was. Flood of Memories. Used to listen to The Days of Future Passed over and over with my college roomies. BEST album!
  3:44am
fred von helsing:

Birthday eh? You're allowed to play any version of "Happy Birthday" that you wish, or even the Beatles song! :) I have Marilyn Monroe singing it to Kennedy if you'd like to play it, it is (of course) a live version.
  3:46am
ausmanx:

Altered Images HAPPY BIRTHDAY, The Sugarcubes BIRTHDAY... there's quite a few Julie faves to choose from, I suspect!
  3:46am
Julie:

I'd feel way too silly doing that
  3:47am
bruce:

great song selection.happy birthday.i love the way your voice sounds.
  3:49am
Julie:

Thank you Bruce! Some new "faces" tonight
  3:49am
Sam:

This is good birthday music - nice and soothing and dreamy.
  3:51am
bruce:

i have not heard donovan in a very long time
  3:51am
Julie:

@bruce that means you're not a regular listener ;)
  3:52am
bruce:

im not but i may become one
  3:53am
Julie:

@Bruce I'm all over the place..I already played Madonna!
  3:53am
Julie:

Do you think that is a Rhodes piano?
  3:54am
Sam:

I don't know, I'm not a Rhodes scholar
  3:55am
Julie:

It's whatever Three Dog night played in Old Fashioned Love Song
  3:55am
Laurie:

Kate Bush! There's your girl! Knew we wouldn't get through this show without her. :)
  3:56am
Who'sOn3rd?:

@Sam, HahHah
  3:57am
fred von helsing:

Hey yeah here's one vote for the Altered Images t00n ! Dear listeners, what should Julie play for herself ?
  3:57am
Laurie:

Ya know this addition thing I have to do to post my message is for the birds. LOL I can't add during normal hours (ask my hubby when he does the checkbook :P) How am I supposed to add at 4am? Already screwed up a few. LOL
  3:58am
bruce:

the songs you are playing set a mellow mood.good 4 am music
  4:00am
bruce:

its nice insomonia music
  4:01am
Julie:

careful it will pick up
  4:03am
Laurie:

@Bruce That's why I'm here...insomnia. That..and the fact that I love Julie!
  4:03am
Julie:

I don't aim to put folks to sleep :)
  4:03am
Julie:

aww shucks
  4:04am
bruce:

sleep at night is overated.
  4:05am
ausmanx:

for some of us in the antipodes, it's 8 pm and party time
  4:05am
fred von helsing:

@bruce seconded
  4:05am
Julie:

I miss sleeping at night! 4 am bedtime has become normal, except tuesdays when it's 8
  4:06am
bruce:

im retired and got into an very late night habit
  4:06am
Laurie:

@Bruce-- Agreed. I find that being way overtired adds to my general delirium and hence, I'm more creative. As an artist, I get my best ideas somewhere between being half asleep and passing out. LOL
  4:07am
Julie:

I thought I was a nice person till I started doing this!
  4:08am
fred von helsing:

If the formal plural of octopus is octopodes (look it up) then what is the singular of antipodes, when referring to Oz or to one half of Kiwiland?
  4:09am
Laurie:

@Von Helsing --- my head is spinning. Another observation...why do we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?
  4:10am
Julie:

I do all my writing late at night..just can't seem to do it daytime
  4:12am
geo:

"antipode" is the singular form of the plural antipodes
  4:12am
ausmanx:

as an editor, fred, i would be inclined to favour octopi as the plural, but you can have a singular antipode. i guess you are actually my antipode if (as i assume) you are on the other side of the world
  4:13am
Laurie:

ADORE Loreena McKennitt!!! Excellent choice, my dear birthday girl!
  4:14am
bruce:

pretty involved conversation for 4:15 am.lol
  4:14am
Laurie:

@Julie --- Ever listen to Blackmore's NIght?
  4:14am
Julie:

that's the best time to have them! like in college!
  4:15am
Laurie:

I connect Loreena with Blackmore's Night for some reason.
  4:16am
geo:

Because you can't drive on a driveway nor park on a parkway
for very long that is .....Wot Sag on the cusp ....Many Happy returns....
  4:16am
fred von helsing:

I am more or less your antipode (sounds kinda fey :) but have you noticed that actually only a very small portion of Earth's land mass actually has land exactly on the opposite side?
  4:16am
Julie:

It is the Celtic influence
  4:17am
bruce:

its a nice song
  4:17am
fred:

OK, if we're going into words, could someone explain to me why we call it a radio "show"?
  4:19am
fred von helsing:

I didn't post today's show on Faceborg bcos I want to try to snap my internet addiction. WFMU is of course exempt. And why do we call it a "chat bored" ?
  4:20am
bruce:

i assume it goes back to the golden days of radio when they did what was like an audio version of what happened on a stage show
  4:21am
Dirty Elvis:

Hiya Julie ;-) Happy Birthday!
  4:22am
geo:

We could call it a radio program ..
as in it's time for the Dark Soul of the Night program
starring Jack Benny
  4:23am
fred von helsing:

... brought to you by Geritol
  4:23am
Julie:

Hi there Dirty Elvis! Thank you!
  4:24am
Julie:

I like program
  4:24am
ausmanx:

listener say, me like program too!
  4:25am
Julie:

programme
  4:25am
Laurie:

My delirium or do you sense a Rush influence in this song by All About Eve that you're playing? Just me?
  4:26am
fred:

There's a french band called "programme".
@Laurie: are you trying to summon Dave B?
  4:27am
Julie:

I swear all the double albums at WFMU have the records in the wrong side
  4:28am
ausmanx:

The former is American white the latter used to be the British (and Australian) spelling. However, the Macquarie Dictionary now considers program the correct spelling for all cases (not only computer programs), while the OED treats both equally. Facit: use program.
  4:28am
Julie:

But first I dropped it on my foot
  4:28am
Julie:

The radio board says program on it..so obviously it is correct
  4:28am
bruce:

in the last year or so i got into vinal records again .after buying a new phonograph.
  4:29am
ausmanx:

that should, of course, have been in quotes... all grammar and style guides are horrifically pompous!
  4:29am
fred von helsing:

The Dark Night of the Soul Radio Programme and Invigorating Refreshment for All Members of the Public Who May be Afflicted With Anaemia of the Spirit and Find No Succor in Coffee, Strong Spirits, or Cheez Doodles
  4:29am
Julie:

oh wow
  4:30am
Laurie:

Dave B? Julie, I think I'm WAY overtired. Not processing. I was thinking of Dave Mustaine from Megadeath when you said Dave B. Then, I thought, oh yeah --Mustaine starts with an M. I really need to go to bed. LOL
  4:30am
fred:

But Ken's playlist usually says "Today's programme"
  4:32am
Enid Coleslaw:

Julie, re: Cocteau Twins...it's hard to find the karaoke versions!
  4:35am
geo:

The word "program" May cause intermittent hiccups or giggles
  4:35am
Dirty Elvis:

"True prayer and true love are learned in the hour when prayer is impossible and the heart has turned to stone." (aka the dark night of the soul)
  4:38am
Laurie:

@ Elvis--that's beautiful! @ Julie---Cleaning up my paints. My contacts are starting to fog and I'm getting a wicked headache. Happy Birthday, beautiful lady, (This Stevie Nicks reminds me of the scene in School of Rock with Jack Black. I loved that movie LMAO!)

a half a key of benzedrine might do the trick
  5:09am
fred von helsing:

Happy Burfday !
  5:10am
ausmanx:

i think these guys name themselves "super" and then the media just parrots it. but yes, any talk of credit ratings at any time of day is usually enough to make... zzzzzzzzz

Oliva Neutron-Bomb, again dredged up from one listener's embarrassing history of early record purchases
  5:22am
Matt from Springfield:

@FVH: Though I admit, "God Only Knows" is well suited to Olivia's voice. I liked that one.
  5:23am
fred von helsing:

Hey Julie well heck if you know about it then help me out, put some content on the Faceborg group! Also a Camille Lan has been posting a ton of stuff to FB and Y00t00b and has been making the Gunilla Mixtapes, it's all good stuff
  5:25am
Julie:

@matt and she really matched the BB's backing vocals. I knew that version for years before I heard the original
  5:25am
Dirty Elvis:

thanks fred...looks good
  5:25am
Brick Van Dee:

Wow, who knew white soul could be this much fun?
  5:26am
Julie:

I had forgotten about this song until he played it Sunday night
  5:27am
fred von helsing:

Camille also has this project http://mwzine.tumblr.com/
  5:27am
Matt from Springfield:

Oh yeah, how was Ray?? Did you get an interview? :)
  5:28am
Julie:

No he wasn't doing interviews this trip! Darnit. There may be hope for a phone-in down the road though.
  5:28am
fred von helsing:

Yeah check out that RFFPR (and join my group for it on Faceborg :) , you can see that it was a real labor of love. One band that's missing tho is the Bush Tetras. Camille has been posting some amazing finds from the 70s and 80s.
  5:29am
Julie:

He was sick, but still amazing
  5:31am
Matt from Springfield:

A phone-in would still be quite a coup; I hope he would, tell him you once devoted 3 hours of airwaves to him!

@Julie 5:25: Funny, isn't it, getting used to a certain cover version years before hearing an original.
  5:32am
Dirty Elvis:

WHRB here in Cambridge used to do a Riot Girl Orgy...don't know if they still do it tho
  5:32am
Marmalade kitty:

a Ray phone in would be great! Uk time would most likely be convenient if it was live..?
  5:33am
Dirty Elvis:

those are some angry chicks lol
  5:34am

  5:34am

@MK live is doubtful I think
  5:34am
Matt from Springfield:

@Dirty Elvis: People always mention Riot Grrl, what are some good representative groups of that style?
  5:35am
Julie:

Bikini Kill was the baseline wasn't it
  5:35am
Matt from Springfield:

He Is The Octopus! Goo goo g'joob!!

@Matt I don't remember off hand I'd have to go back in my tapes and they're pretty dusty...
  5:36am
Marmalade kitty:

give Ray a ring!!!
  5:36am
Julie:

L7 now those are some tough chicks
  5:36am
fred von helsing:

BK and maybe also Bratmobile and Huggy Bear. I read that new book on Riot Grrl, it's pretty good.
  5:38am
Dirty Elvis:

Sandy Denny my hero ;-)
  5:38am
fred von helsing:

I love the L7 vid where they're on the Brit show and Donita drops trou. Her album w the Stellar Moments (includes Dee Plakas) is one of my favorites, there's some wonderful crankin' rock grooves

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/nov/22/occupy-movement-change?newsfeed=true change will come.
  5:39am
fred von helsing:

Another great FF/RG band is The Gits, there's a way good docu out about them
  5:40am
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks all, I found a string of names on Wiki, but it's a long, winding list so it's nice to get some focus here. Sleater-Kinney is mentioned too--I like them but I imagine they're more mainstream than the others.
  5:41am
Dave B:

Benjamin Zephaniah / Transglobal Underground do a good reinterpretation of Tam Lyn Retoldon The Imagined Village LP
  5:41am
Julie:

I am so glad there was no OWS drama like last week at this time!
  5:42am
fred von helsing:

Sleater-Kinney came later yeah? In the same vein (same people) are Wild Flag and Helium and several more. There's a great 8m version of SK doing "Let's call it love".
  5:45am
Marmalade kitty:

I couldn't believe it when I heard that protesters in London had occupied the disused USB Bank HQ perfect!? :)
  5:46am
Matt from Springfield:

Love those Payolas!
  5:48am
ausmanx:

i think it's time to start occupying the functioning bank buildings rather than the disused ones. somehow that action seemed like some kind of symbol of the marginalisation of the movement
  5:49am
fred von helsing:

Hah, I have this Herb on vinyl! With the whipped cream gal!
  5:49am
Dirty Elvis:

Julie: have you ever come across 'A Tree Full Of Secrets'? (18-disc Pink Floyd comp)
  5:49am
Julie:

@DE nope!
  5:50am
Julie:

My folks had that when I was little
  5:50am
Julie:

Thanks so much guys for listening!
  5:50am
Julie:

Getting to be Syd time
  5:51am
fred von helsing:

Marginalisation? No. It's both tactically and strategically savvy. Guardian says they've got workshops 'n stuff running full-bore. Empty buildings plus homelessness equals obscenity.
  5:52am
fred von helsing:

Yup same here, I inherited the Herb
  5:52am
Matt from Springfield:

It does sound like the old striptease music! Fantastic!
  5:54am
ausmanx:

they're not actually housing the homeless in the empty bank building, are they? and you can't really quote a Zionist rag like the Guardian on anything much these days, I fear. it just seems to me like Occupy are preaching more and more to the converted (like us)... there is no 99%: there may only be a 9%
  5:55am
Marmalade kitty:

FVH agreed! Julie great show..have a lovely day!!!
  5:56am
fred von helsing:

Yes point taken, the stated goal AFAIK is not sheltering the homeless in the USB, but I would expect it to happen along the way

Matt from Springfield:

Ausmanx, I would chide you for such cynicism, but you ARE a self-described gadfly. So I'll cut you some slack!
  5:57am
fred von helsing:

A double dose of Herb's music to strip by PLUS a ton of way fab FF stuff, thanks once again DJ Birthday Girl !
  5:57am
geo:

Goodnight all from the dating game of the soul programme
a big kiss to radio land Wot larks.....
  5:57am
Dirty Elvis:

Have a good one Julie!
  5:58am
Matt from Springfield:

That said, Occupy movements are being evicted even on ABANDONED property, so any highlighting of such obscenity is a good thing.
  5:58am
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for a good show Julie!
Have a great Tuesday everyone!
  6:01am
Julie:

thanks guys!
  6:01am
Marmalade kitty:

Occupy repossesses bank: perfect symbolism highlighting of the occupy movement
  6:03am
Matt from Springfield:

Agree, MK!
And with "Organ Blues" (into this other song), there has FINALLY been a seamless transition into Marty's show. Usually it just cuts in suddenly. Splendid!
  6:04am
Marmalade kitty:

repossesssessssssa!
  9:54am
Van in Dallas:

Happy Birthday Julie
  2:22pm
Van in Dallas:

Was nice to see the Herb Alpert since I had tweeted out the entire album of Whipped Cream just last week as my musical selection of the day. What a wonderful album.
