Give the Drummer Some Knoll Essence.
  9:52am Doug Schulkind:

The dollar amount assigned to this show by the poobahs at WFMU is $2000. So it is easy to figure out how much a pledge will mean in terms of the percentage of the goal. Every twenty bucks is another percent. If everyone listening now dropped $20, well you can guess what would happen. (Obviously, many of you listening have already given. But you get the idea.)

For others, the chap Chris, Brian and I are discussing is seen here ( easy to spot - he's wearing shorts )
http://77.68.47.12/bbchumanplanet/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/music-planet-1-lores.jpg
It would be three tonnes I'm sure. I know because I once helped to move the bloody stuff when he changed homes in London. It's a wonder I lived to tell the small tale.
Is 'The Creek' that pub by the harbour in Peel ?
  10:23am Pedro:

Another fantastic show. And hearing a real live d.j. is so much better than just tunes without full context.
  10:25am BodegaMan:

This Efe Pygmies is wonderful. Kind of sounds like there's electronic aspects to it. but I'm guessing it's not.
  10:27am Hugo:

Paul, I thought that pic fitted nicely with the music right now. Seven tonnes, was it, all in all?
  10:27am Doug Schulkind:

I'm so glad you feel that way, Pedro. When WFMU offered to let me start up this 24-hour web stream, I said I do it ONLY if I could deliver my radio show live on it. It means the world to me.

Morning BodegaMan!
10:28am Chris - Isle Of Man:

That's the one, he had a fish for coffee deal worked out with them, trip out on the boat - coffee at the Creek, I met a few people down there with him.
  10:29am Brian in UK:

Listening to these field recordings reminds me of this programme that was on the radio last week.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b015ck9b
  10:31am Doug Schulkind:

Efe Pygmies were completely acoustic (with maybe some hallucinogenics assistance).
  10:32am Paul Sherratt:

Hugo,
Sixteen tonnes for all I know ! He did want me to buy it off him a while back but I'm in a de-cluttering stage of life !

For others - ' The Boy Wonder with Buster '

Chris what does Buster enjoy having for his tea ...?
  10:33am Randy:

Good morning Doug et al. Sorry I've been MIA lately.
10:34am Chris - Isle Of Man:

Well it used to be my cats food, I'm not sure what he ate at home, crab possibly?
  10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Randy! How're the fishes?
  10:34am Brian in UK:

It seems like there is a theme with people (mainly men) who travel abroad and collect native sounds from Cecil Sharp to the Lomax's! The accusation of personal gain and stealing from the natives. Not for altruistic motives.
  10:35am still b/p:

New movie featuring Bayaka pygmy culture probably has great music...but otherwise I'm apprehensive. It's a comedy -- "Oka!"
  10:35am Randy:

Wet!
  10:36am ndbob:

agreed Pedro.. and having a live message board makes live shows even better.. I do wish that there was a full chat however.
10:36am Chris - Isle Of Man:

Followed by a Marlboro Light?
  10:38am Brian in UK:

Hey Doug can we have some Sufi. It could be called Circular Music from Turkey.

Chris Did Buster smoke too?
  10:39am Hugo:

Paul - "decluttering stage of life" - yes, I can appreciate that. Most of the stuff goes on external hard drives, except for the odd cd and lp coming in ...
  10:39am Doug Schulkind:

No Sufi today, but not for the lack of love for it.
10:39am Chris - Isle Of Man:

Definitely giving the drummer some here - great show.

Brian - like a chimney!
  10:40am ndbob:

  10:40am Doug Schulkind:

Thank you from the bottom of my record collection, Chris.
  10:42am Carmichael:

Hiya Doug, hello everyone. Shimmying away to MoMo.

Doug, can you estimate how many tonnes your collection weighs?
  10:43am 90% dc pat:

Here, here: HAIL EX!
  10:44am Paul Sherratt:

Chris,
Marlborough Light and coffee .. no NEVER give Buster coffee.
AK stayed here with us ( N Staffs ) for a few days when he was ' on the run ' Our dog, Jim, amused himself no end by stealing both his fags* and lighter. He can run much faster than any DJ ..
* US friends - ' fags ' is UK slang for cigarettes ...
  10:45am ndbob:

same*
  10:46am annie:

the visual for that last comment was delicious..
  10:46am Paul Sherratt:

ndbob, thanks.
  10:46am Hugo:

I saw the Ex Guitars with Ken Vandermark and Paal Nilssen Love a couple of weeks back. These chaps know how to bounce around the stage!
10:51am Chris - Isle Of Man:

Paul,
Incredibly, when AK was 'on the run' is when I first met Buster wandering Peel on his own, having escaped his foster parent, so I took him home and fed him. When AK returned I told him about it and the three of us bonded over a John Martyn discussion, and a fag or two at the Creek.
  10:53am Paul Sherratt:

annie,
I have a permanently fixed picture of dog Jim running in circles around the garden with a broken cigarette hanging from the corner of his mouth.
  10:55am Doug Schulkind:

Paul, had wonderful beagle named Lubi when I was a kid. She got real sick one time and we took her to the vet who, after a number of tests, diagnosed emphysema. No kidding! And she didn't even smoke that much. (It turned out to be epilepsy.)
  10:57am annie:

it's wonderful, all those video shorts which are stored in our brains.. morphing gradually to things which never could have happened.. but yes.. the idea of doug rubbing musical accessories all over himself is quite the image.. the image that most burns in my brain is the one of our 20-year old female cat cissy, giving birth to her millionth litter under the dining room table at dinnertime. classic!
  10:58am Paul Sherratt:

And yet Doug, Beagles are traditionally, very heavy smokers ..
  10:58am Doug Schulkind:

BING BING BING BING! Just thought I'd mention that today, first the first time in the history of my show on Give the Drummer Radio, there are more people listeing to the stream to the WFMU mothership online. Tony Coulter accomplished this two weeks ago, but this is a first for GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME. It simply blows me away.
10:59am Chris - Isle Of Man:

Paul,
Relive the moment @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAH-YAhkU9M
11:00am Chris - Isle Of Man:

Congrats drummer!
  11:01am jmr3:

I just switched from the main stream (fmu mainstream?) because Scott was talking about Give the Drummer
  11:02am Doug Schulkind:

@jmr3
Yes, Scott right now has Jeff Golick on his show who will be hosting a new program here on Give the Drummer Radio! Welcome jmr3!
  11:02am Paul Sherratt:

Chris,
Didn't Buster get some Member Of Parliament, whose name I forget ( a Liberal ) in to some bother with the local council after she ended up fostering him for a few weeks ?
  11:07am listener james from westwood:

ahhhhh ... gtds makes any meeting more palatable.
kudos on the heavy online listenership, doug and tony!
11:08am Chris - Isle Of Man:

I've no real knowledge of that Paul, but I'd hazard a guess and say, definitely, where Buster goes, trouble follows. Here's the real thing...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5q4-_TmkAzE
  11:08am Van in Dallas:

After 27 yrs of heavy smoking I quit cold turkey just over a yr ago. Just shy of emphysema. COPD sucks. Wish I could go back in time and slap myself silly for even thinking of starting. Sure miss it though.
  11:11am Doug Schulkind:

We've been stuck on 53% for a sec. Anyone care to kick us upstairs a bit? We really need to keep the stream a-gurgling.
11:12am Chris - Isle Of Man:

Love the title of this tune, reminds me of another favourite title, 'Ya Hound Ya Lie'
  11:19am trsh:

Van, you miss having health problems? Nicotine withdrawal is nasty.
  11:20am Paul Sherratt:

Chris,
Thanks for the tubes. Buster, if I remember correctly, was purchased through the sale of a hundredweight of surplus cds ...
11:22am Chris - Isle Of Man:

Haha, I don't doubt it!
  11:25am Doug Schulkind:

I would love to introduce these monks to Thelonious. (They would envy his hats.)
  11:29am Doug Schulkind:

We've raised 10% of the goal during today's show. I would LOVE TO get that number up 75% by show's end and IMPLORE all to give something—any amount—to help out WFMU. Pledge using the widget atop the playlist and your contribution is recorded as supporting this here radio show. Thanks!
