Listener Schned:

Living in the Alphabet/East Village makes one accustomed to the A-list A-holes (and their dorm-dwellin' acolytes) attempting to represent. However, 2 personal faves: Debby Harry herself running from East 6th Street to East 5th Street to cop "On the Wiz" heroin (a looong time ago); more recently (but still dating my sorry ready-to-retire ass) Parker Posey chillin' on a stoop just doors down from flame Thomas Beller's loft on East 2nd Street, fairly early one morning (bidin' her time with a Marlboro, probably waiting for TB to get the underager out of bed first before letting PP in :) Luv yr show!!!
  7:55pm
listener gary:

When I moved to nyc in 1959 I lived on east 47 street and I was neighbors with and saw often in the streets Katherine Hepburn, Greta Garbo, and Lena Horne.
While working in the film industry for 30 years I met a lot of folks ...I shared a car ride upstate to film location with John Belushi. I never watched tv so i had no idea who he was.
I was introduced to Vivian Leigh backstage at an off broadway show that her boyfriend was in ...I was the crew.
Tony perkins cruised me one day in the west village. I was so taken aback I laughed and he said "well. excuse me" and rode off on his bicycle.
I got in an elevator at my therapist's office one day and saw woody allen standing in the back. as I faced front someone said Hi Gary and I slowly turned around the other way and it was danny aiello, with whom i had just worked with on a feature film.
Well, I guess i could go on...but, like, you know....it was a lot of years. oh, and...
  7:55pm
Annie:

My scrabble partner here says he accidentally locked jackie onassis out of a building. And he drank with norman mailer. Dig that

saw ed harris getting harrassed by airport security in LA, to the point where he dropped his pants right in the terminal. saw mariah carey in a restaurant that same trip, ignoring her entourage while she texted the whole time. also saw loretta swit, who looked embalmed.
  8:04pm
Mitten John:

Biff Henderson at a Detroit Grand Prix some years ago--real nice guy. Oh yeah, Paul Newman, too--same.
  8:04pm
Steve L:

Literally ran into Madonna and child coming down those big stairs inside the Prince Building on B'way and Houston, ca 2001. She was leaving her yoga class, my friend and I were stepping outside to walk his dog. "Oh look, Lola. Look at the nice doggie. Isn't that a nice doggie?" over and over down three flights of stairs. Outside they stepped into a small mirror-windowed SUV, and she turned to wave to us. I don't care one way or another about Madonna's music, but she seemed nice enough.
  8:08pm
G:

flew on a plane with kids i knew from Brasil to the US while in college, circa 1977. one of us thought we saw cat stevens in first class, and we were right, as confirmed by one his crew back in coach with us. the crew guy asked us to be cool and not bug him, so we just checked him out, carrying a guitar, as we all changed planes in miami.
  8:17pm
Don (trip dub):

James Brown's guitarist Jimmy scratch Nolen, alright. Wanna hear some more from your travels.

walking through soho a few years back, my walking-through-soho companion realized we were just steps behind a freshly bald michael stipe.

aforementioned companion said to me: "how much will you give me to run up to him and say, 'oh Moby! I love you so much!'?"

said companion is much cleverer than me.
  8:19pm

  8:23pm
bruceleh:

51st & 6th, hanging out on a bench out side of Rochester Big & Tall. I see someone crossing 6th, wearing golf clothes, the hat, checkered flourescent slacks. As he comes closer, I say to my friend, "Hey, that guy's wearing really long pants" They actually looked like the pants a stilt walker wears. Before he even gets to me, the salutes start, "Kareem!"
He turned and walked into Rochester Big & Tall.
  8:26pm
three-fingered joe:

i love that connie smith
  8:27pm
cb1:

Mo,

I left the stage door of the Sadler Wells Theater right behinjd Rudy Nureyev. Got crushed in his fans. Knew I didn't want to that again.

Great show.
  8:28pm

Tony Bennett on 57th Street, Jacqueline Onassis rowing a boat on the lake in Central Park with her granddaughter (I think), Dustin Hoffman on Third Avenue, Robert MacNeil, Jimmy Carter. I once rode in an elevator with Katherine Hepburn.
  8:30pm
zbs:

I once rode in an elevator with a Project Runway contestant. She was much smaller and much prettier than I thought. Also got and made use of phone service in the elevator.
  8:30pm
bruceleh:

Many musicians are members of the Park Slope Food Coop. Often ran into the gorgeous face of the late Leroy Jenkins. Other frequent run-ins include Sylvie Courvoisier and Ned Rothenberg
  8:32pm

  8:41pm
CB2:

Don't know the question.
But I remember inviting Ertha Kitt for champagne after her performance at the Carlilse offering her a movie role (don't ask). Her new record "Back in Business" was just out and I said in ernest, "My Boyfriend loves your new albumn. It is perfect for cleaning house!"
She laughed, said "You are trouble.", and accepted the role.
Alas, movie never made.

BTW, good evening.
  8:51pm
gdon:

oh no i missed it! how long till the pop-up player is available?
  8:52pm
Ken in Denver:

In '88 I saw Adrian Sherwood at an in-store in S.F. No big deal, but a week or two later my brother and I stopped so he could buy cigs on the way to a Tackhead show. In the liquor store were Sherwood and band. We foolishly declined their dinner invitation. Also, my wife swears she saw Justine Bateman having dinner with friends at an Indian restaurant in London but was too cool to point her out to me at the time.
  8:52pm
listener gary:

for many years in the 60's when i lived on bleecker and thompson street a lot of wide eyed young men would run up to me all brathless and say: excuse me are you jerry garcia? No. I would say, I'm sorry I am not. Finally, after years of this I said to the guy, by the way, who is jerry garcia. He looked at me in wide eyed horror and walked across the street backward. In 1986 a friend told me who jerry garcia was...over ice cream, natch! Never cared much for rock or surfer music.

Charlie Watts in the Toronto airport the morning after I had seen him and his jazz band play at Massey Hall the night before. My wife saw Courtney Love in Manhattan and got a very hastily scrawled autograph (she appeared to be pretty wasted). I also once bumped into Bobby Riggs in Manhattan.

  5:58am
Roy Boy:

Late to the party, I know, but had to weigh in on "celeb encounters." Met a lot of them due to working for a very popular video store (remember them?)

1) The B-52s renting "Hillbillies from Outer Space"
2) Tom Waits and Jim Jarmusch hanging out , making selection together
3) Kathleen Turner somewhat tipsy, with her husband tobe
4) Tony Randall, who only rented operas and ballets, with the exception of "Barry Lyndon," which he declared a masterpiece
5) Saw Jackie O at MOMA and Yoko Ono in Central Park after opening day for "Blue Velvet;" both were visibly wary when they saw me staring at them, no doubt due to what happened to their husbands
  3:15pm
Parq:

Miss Monica: I’m listening on the archives (sorry I have to do that so often nowadays). Wanted to share, belatedly, two of my celeb sightings. (1) Happened to look up when leaving my building one afternoon ca. 1995, to see Howard Stern on his way in. I don’t know what his business was, but he looked sheepish when he realized I recognized him. (2) Via my dad, had a per diem job as a stagehand for a Bill Moyers interview in spring 1979 - the interviewee, whom all of the crew met, was His Highness Prince Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia, a year after Viet Nam had ousted the Khmer Rouge.
  2:18pm
Duane:

Great show Monica! Had to share from my OM days: 1) Benicio Del Toro purchasing Waylon Jennings-"Honky Tonk Heroes" and the Groupies" doc on dvd 2) Ric Ocasek purchasing an obscure 80's digital reggae cd by White Mice 3) Robin Williams buying a Cody Chestnutt cd 4) Jamie Morgan purchasing "The Mac" OST cd 5) Gael Garcia Bernal buying the Serge Gainsbourg box set:)
