i like bakelite. it's a good plastic to me, and as it's no longuer produced it obliged to recycle by bying them on flea market and other garage sale http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakélite + it is in a Gainsbourg song (sea sex and sun)!

I feel like good intentions turn into capitalist fads too often. I buy into this crap all the time. I'm looking at an expensive aluminum water bottle that I never use and right next to it is my beat up old plastic bike bottle. NOW, that's not to say that the production of plastic isn't more harmful than production of aluminum--and I understand that aluminum is a lot less resource demanding to recycle than plastic.

so...like everything else it's complicated... Ultimately I think you're right, the goal is to consume less.

going home on my bike along Rosebury Avenue, Sadlers Wells Thertre I passed Robert and Alfie , turned round and cheesily said, I love you both. Robert and Alfie smiled, Robert with his hands clasped together at his chest. It made my day.

@ trouble : …and it breaks easily, that's why it stopped i guess, we people tend to break thing now, and buy replacements… make things last longer is a goal to me too.

@ Cheri Pi : if i find something, i'll let you know, i bought a bakelite ashtray, and it does the trick. It is quite easy to find around here (france), sometime it's expensive, sometimes not at all.

Speaking of fiberglass, on my way to work this morning I jumped out of my car to pick up (from the side of the road) a fantastic double decker fiberglass lampshade. It has a small crack but otherwise is in perfect condition. Some products last forever.
