Favoriting August 24, 2011: WRONG WORDS live set!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

There's a certain midwest power pop sensibility to the Wrong Words, despite the fact that the band is actually from Oakland. Think the Shoes or 20/20 with Andy Partridge of XTC on vocals and you might start to get the idea. But why think when you can just tune in and hear them?! And look for their self-titled debut LP on Trouble In Mind.

efd:

mrrmacho, thanks! Glad you're enjoying it, and thanks for pledging!

Cheri, if those disco shows happen too frequently they'll wear out their welcome. Maybe next year.
  9:19pm
Danne D:

Hi Funk Fans :)
Hey EFD - awesome to hear Dukes of Stratosphear, especially Vanishing Girl which may be my very favorite of theirs.

Heading to TN (by way of NC) tomorrow so I'll be in packing mode but I might comment later :)
  9:25pm

Mike Sin:

The Collector's Choice (RIP) CD is a straight reissue of their 1973 Mercury LP.

Thanks Bloomie!
  9:59pm
Dave B:

I love the smell of asphalt in the evening

It smells like...

WINNING!
  10:00pm
efd:

At least they're using that extra-quiet nighttime paving equipment.

I'm assuming.
  10:00pm
Joe B:

great Move cover!
  10:01pm
efd:

Yeah! I agree, Joe!
  10:02pm

EFD! You are a man among men!
  10:16pm
Trouble In Mind:

or something.
  10:16pm
efd:

let the records show that the above comment was posted BEFORE I started playing the new Limiñanas single.
  10:17pm
Trouble In Mind:

or WAS IT??!?!?!
  10:18pm
Stanton Fraser:

Man, Trouble In Mind has been killing it lately with all these albums and 7"s. This Limiñanas is killer.
  10:19pm
Trouble In Mind:

Thanks! Just wait for the Mikal Cronin record next month!
  10:24pm
Fraser Stanton or Stanton Fraser?:

Oh man, and my favorite cut from the new Coathangers. You killin' it tonight EFD
  10:24pm
Stevel:

Holly: Obviously you need a new job with a more acceptable schedule!

Can't believe the Limiñanas hop-scotched over beautiful Fort Wayne last week.
  10:25pm
efd:

this new Coathangers is great!
  10:28pm
Stevel:

The Ettes may be my next, new, favorite band.
  10:28pm
Joan Crawford:

Those were some high grade wood coathangers right there!
  10:36pm
Kat:

Make that 498, I have one too :)
  10:37pm
Danne D:

Dave B, it must be paving season as they'll be doing my street here in Jersey either today or tomorrow.
  10:38pm
Danne D:

Hi Holly, not too much time in NC proper. Heading there to meet my bro-in-law and nephew and then we're driving to Bristol the next morning. Returning to NC Sunday with a Sunday night flight.
(Raleigh)
  10:39pm
Danne D:

(assuming of course that the hurricane will not have eliminated NJ by that night)
  10:41pm
Hurricane Irene:

When you see the storm surge coming, take a really deep breath.
  10:42pm
Hurricane Irene:

Ocracoke being evacuated. expect all of NC to be going glub glub glub by the weekend ;-)
  10:44pm
Mo Tuffy:

HURRICANE SET!!!!!
  10:44pm
G:

"Real Life Permanent Dream" is from the title of a Tomorrow song that Steve Howe played guitar on during the psychedelic era.
  10:45pm
John L.:

I've never heard the Rokes before. This is great!!!
  10:46pm
efd:

you know, I wasn't even thinking of that Mo Tuffy.
G, the version of "Real Life Permanent Dream" that's on that box set is by the Orange Machine, just fyi.
  10:48pm
mike east:

Checking in. Great show efd! Was that coathangers tune the one that said "life it must go on and on"? I was in the car when I heard it and missed the backannounce
  10:51pm
PB:

That track by Tamaryn was really interesting. I heard a little Mazzy Star, Black Tambourine and My Bloody Valentine but also a pretty original (and very cool) sound.
  10:51pm
efd:

Thanks Mike! I didn't really catch the lyrics, to tell you the truth... it had a female vocal, if that helps?
  10:53pm
G:

just for trivia lovers -- "Real Life Permanent Dream" by Orange Machine from the comp of that name is the same song as Tomorrow's song of the same title; I listed to the sample available online. The song is credited to Hopkins which is the real last name of Keith West, vocalist in Tomorrow and well known in the late 60s for his work on the Teenage Opera project that predated Tommy. On the Orange Machine sample I heard, the guitarist is redoing Howe's parts pretty closely.
  10:55pm
efd:

Thanks, G!

Mike East, the Coathangers CD has a lyric sheet, it turns out, and that prhase is not in the song I played.
  10:56pm
PB:

Quick question for the listeners or Evan. Are any of the solo albums by former members of Pavement any good?
  10:56pm
mike east:

Hmm...might been the one before it then.
  10:56pm
Mo Tuffy:

Almost all the Malkmus & the Jicks albums. Go for it!
  10:58pm
Julie:

Tamaryn is great! Dan Bodah turned me onto her (them?)
  10:58pm
PB:

@ Mo. Thanks. I figured the albums by Malkmus would be the best.
  10:58pm
Mo Tuffy:

I KNEW you were going to give "Visage" a little bit of "Le Poisson Rouge"
  11:00pm
G:

Yeah, cheapest copy I could find for that 4 CD set is $110!
  11:01pm
Mo Tuffy:

@PB if you like abject, completely wrong-in-the-right-way acid casualty weirdness, don't hesistate to check out Gary Young's Hospital also.

Just make sure you don't pay any money for it.
  11:02pm
Joe B:

@ PB I recommend Monsoon by Preston School of Industry. They also played at WFMU on March 30, 2004!
  11:02pm
cheri:

hiya julie & danne ,,,killer show evan!!!! evan you always deliver!!!
  11:03pm
Calgon:

We're on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11:06pm
cheri:

danne have a wonderful vacay!!!
  11:07pm
PB:

@ Mo and Joe B. thanks for the recommendations, I will check them out. Pavement was so great that I feel I need to get some of the former members solo stuff. "Wrong-in-the-right-way acid casualty weirdness" sounds good to me.
  11:09pm
Dave B:

I can never get enuff of the Pie....
  11:09pm
PB:

Didn't expect to hear Humble Pie on this show. Great track though.
  11:11pm
Danne D:

Thx cheri

Great show tonight, Evan.
  11:12pm
Pie:

But this one goes to eleven.
  11:12pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Good travel Danne D.
  11:13pm
Danne D:

Gracias, Richard :)
  11:15pm
cheri:

evan---you're the best in everything you do!!!
  11:16pm
blacktooth:

God bless whoever gets those Personal & the Pizza's tix. I wish I could make it.
  11:17pm
Dave B:

@Pie - November 11th this year = International Nigel Tufnel Day!

11/11/11
  11:17pm
Pie:

Elevenses, max kewl!
  11:18pm
Ike:

Two or three of those tracks between Guitars and Visage were nicely shoegaze-y and noisy but I lost track of which ones. I'll have to hit the archives later.
  11:21pm
Mo Tuffy:

I hope whoever got those tix opts for the special Maxwells' deal where you get a personal pizza w/ entry.

although I am slightly concerned the pizza is not normally on the Maxwell's menu
  11:22pm
efd:

Ike, the Tamaryn and Foreign Cinema tracks are probably the ones you're thinking of.

Hi Julie, thanks for commenting/listening! I think Tamaryn is mainly a "her," assisted by some of "them."

PB, blacktooth, and everyone else, thanks to you as well!

cheri, you're too kind.
  11:26pm
mike east:

Wasnt that the freakonomics theme song?
  11:28pm
efd:

Someone other than me will have to answer that question.
  11:29pm
molly:

i keep posting youtube links to all the songs you're playing here tonight on my facebook. while, of course, encouraging everyone to liven up their wednesday by tuning into WFMU!!
  11:31pm
cheri:

i have to head out now,, thnx for everything efd,, see you all real soon,, night!!!bye evan,,julie & danne
  11:31pm
Mo Tuffy:

the freakanomics podcast theme song is "Hitch Hikers" by Mt. Fortune, or possibly "Mt. Fortune" by Hitch Hikers

fun fact - the Conspiracy of Owls album is sold out and currently trading on discogs for 150 dollars. sigh.
  11:32pm
blacktooth:

  11:52pm
Holly in NC:

Yo internet connection! - If you don't stop sulking your face will freeze like that. And I'll have to drop you off at an ER in Nebraska.
  11:52pm

Nebraska's where (perhaps apocryphally) you can 'surrender' (ditch) kids up 'til the age of 18. A friend of mine uses that as a threat when his kids act up....
  11:58pm
Yankees Fan:

A J Burnett died too, his head just hasn't checked its email yet.
  11:58pm
Danne D:

(He won the award in 79 for the O's and was part of their 83 championship team). In that '79 series, the Orioles lost to the Pirates. Yes, the Pirates and Orioles really opposed each other in a World Series, though it seems impossible now.
  11:58pm
Danne D:

Anyhow, thanks for a great show EFD and have a great night everyone! Now kicking back to enjoy the "throw"
