Did "Soul Raga" sound like a TV Theme song or something to anyone else? Despite it being from 1976, it sure sounded familiar....

I'm a white guy who grew up in South Africa during apartheidt and I remember picaninny being used for little black kids, but almost in an affectionate way, not malicious. But I don't know if the origin of the word is racist.
  10:03pm
gregory:

ok, I looked it up and it's totally racist. whoops.
  10:04pm
George of Troy:

Italo! Nice.
  10:09pm
fred von helsing:

good stuff !
  10:10pm
G:

It's from Portuguese for "little ones" (meaning kids, specifically used of black kids). -- Pretty much any word for Africans in slavery diaspora became tinged with that era and was subsequently jettisoned as pejorative, even if "little ones" used for children was originally descriptive, rather than deliberately derogatory.
  10:11pm

Talk about pretentious
  11:34pm
Jason The Bogen:

More pretentious than a christian band from the UK covering a John Denver song?
  11:36pm
T-Zero:

I was thinking more regarding the lyrics
  11:39pm
Jason The Bogen:

TZero-

Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but are you confusing 'self-righteous' with 'pretentious'?
  11:40pm
T-Zero:

No, I don't think so. Seemed to be making claim to a sense of self-importance
  11:50pm
david:

embrace the hiss...
  11:52pm
Alger:

I'm down with that.
  11:56pm
12539:

Thanks for taking care of business tonight, Jason.
  11:58pm
T-Zero:

@Jason: Well, I'd agree with the sentiment of self-righteousness, in general, but in this instance I didn't get a sense of the lyrics being exceptionally judgemental or "preachy", as much as thinking herself of particular self-importance that some supreme being appointed her specifically to be the medium. Of course, there's nothing unusual about that either. As for the music itself, it was quite nice, aside from the lyrics irritating me, personally. Others probably took no exception to those at all. ;)
  11:59pm
Theo Loggins:

Harcore Christians believe God gives them everything good. To them it's not about their individuality being superior or something, just a statement of fact based on their definition of what they think "God" means.

But I guess we're entitled not to understand them. They don't understand us, either.
