Listener comments!

  8:50am listener james from westwood:

you know, as music beds go for laughter, i like this one a lot better than those old "i'm drunk and playing a trumpet" laugh albums from the early 60s.
  8:51am listener james from westwood:

not to insult the sliver of the fmu listenership who jumps out of their chair whenever an "i'm drunk and playing a trumpet" album airs on the station, now. :)
  8:52am Doug Schulkind:

The cackling trumpet on some of the freakier moments during the Rosemary's Baby soundtrack make me think of that. Maybe that's a trumpet on ludes and not booze.
  8:56am listener james from westwood:

Yes, I can hear that in my head. Touches on the same auditory centers.
No reason it couldn't have been 'ludes and booze both! (Followed by 28 hours of uninterrupted sleep.)
  8:57am annie:

up and at 'em!!
  8:58am listener james from westwood:

happy friday to you, annie!
  8:59am Doug Schulkind:

G'morning Annie. Big, beautiful moon last night. Didja see?
  9:00am Ken:

OK Doug, you are on the air!
  9:01am annie:

yep, it's friday!! thanks! even my extra strong coffeee has yet to kick in.. but at least the song in my overnight head is gone..
i saw the moon the day before doug, She's been absolutely gorgeous, huh??
  9:01am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks Ken
  9:02am Jessibird:

I'm awake, though not witty, or even out of bed. Surprisingly ungrating laughter there.
  9:02am annie:

no stream yet....?
  9:02am listener james from westwood:

hope tonight's clear; it's stunning in northern nj right now, so maybe i'll catch a glimpse of the moon tonight.
  9:03am listener james from westwood:

morning, jessibird!
aaaand there's the theme on the stream we know and love!
  9:04am annie:

i've had the joy of lately visiting a mountaintop cabin in the early evenings.. wow, combined with the trees and woods and remoteness, the moon is all the more beautiful.. maybe my writer's block is waning...
  9:05am Doug Schulkind:

Hello there Jessibird. Glad to have you on the wing.
  9:05am Marmalade Kitty:

long time no hear! WAH wah WAH wah WAH wah WAH wah WAH wah WAH wah...
  9:06am Doug Schulkind:

Here Kitty, Kitty!
  9:06am listener james from westwood:

mornin' marmalade!
  9:07am Jessibird:

Morning to you all from this California tourist town (Santa Cruz). Typical cloudy summer morning here. Can't complain about the non-life-threatening weather here. Any of you coping with extremes?
  9:08am Michael:

Perseid meterors tonight so you don't want the moon!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-14503284
  9:10am NC Joel:

Top o the morning, Mr. DJ. Thanks for the lovely sounds this a.m.
  9:11am Jessibird:

Annie, my best wishes for a flowing pen, or tippetty tapping keyboard. Ah Doug you know how to make me happy! Love this Cuban track.
  9:12am Doug Schulkind:

Hullo there, NC Joel.
  9:12am Marmalade Kitty:

Here Dougie! :) Morning all
  9:12am annie:

....and a huge word of thanks to the WinRar app!! wow, am i having fun or what!? i'm finally able to download the motherlode, and my itouch isn't even two thirds full yet! sweet sweet tunes. i found the three-album collection of hoagy charmichael tribute performers i used to own. life is nice.. i have music.
  9:13am listener james from westwood:

mornin' michael and joel! thanks for the reminder about the perseids. i always seem to learn about the regular showers a bit too late to see them.
  9:13am Doug Schulkind:

So lovely to be back—when I never left!
  9:16am Brian in UK:

Morning friends. I'm torn twixt listening to the cricket where England are whipping India and the Drummer. Then I saw that Kooba was playing. now Arsenio the master.
Not whipping the Drummer to end any possible confusion.
  9:16am still b/p:

A TV show! ...Welcome Back, Drummer! And we (on regular Fridays) would be the streamhogs.

Caught one shooting star last night at the edge of a lake after a short dip.
  9:17am Brian in UK:

This is what I mean by whipping
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/hi/english/static/cricket/statistics/scorecards/2011/08/86085/html/scorecard.stm
  9:17am listener james from westwood:

mornin' brian and b/p!
  9:18am listener james from westwood:

i've seen 3 shooting stars in my life, which is probably unnaturally small of a number. comes from living near nyc all my life.
  9:21am hamburger:

howdy / there was one night I thought I saw 10-20 shooting stars .. only to realise it was the reflection of car headlights shining off a chimney antennae...
  9:21am Doug Schulkind:

One night, about 20 years ago, my girlfriend at the time and I saw a shooting star go all the way across the sky. It lasted about 30 seconds. Crazy. (In fact, we were sitting at Station Manager Ken's lake house at a WFMU outing in the woods.) Well I knew right then that I would marry that girlfriend. (Which I did.)
  9:22am Doug Schulkind:

By the way, this song is about abuse of prison inmates. Good times!
  9:22am listener james from westwood:

no disrespect to coffee, but this opening set kicks coffee's ass as a get-moving motivator!
  9:23am listener james from westwood:

and no disrespect to the inmates for being memorialized with such a jumpin' tune!
  9:23am annie:

nice, doug,.. nice
  9:24am Doug Schulkind:

I don't think you want to say "jumping" in this context, Listener James.
  9:25am Brian in UK:

Are you running the whole show with this set, PLEASE?
  9:27am Doug Schulkind:

Only 7:54 of this set, Brian. Sadly.
  9:27am still b/p:

Good mornin' to all. First set's a fine start.
Never saw shooting stars when I was a kid, but many since, including great sparky numbers that broke up in the sky, and the INTENSE Leonid storm of '01, viewed from a ledge in the mountains. The shooting star of romance is a nice note.
  9:30am ?:

" When in doubt, head for the Cuban records shelf ... "
  9:30am Brian in UK:

There used to be a theatrical company overhere called 7:84. It was based on a statistic that 7% of the population own 84% of the wealth. Useless fact No. 25.
  9:30am Jessibird:

Brian, I am of your mind. I'm bamboleandome here all the way.
  9:30am Doug Schulkind:

With a name like "?" I guess you have plenty of doubt!
  9:32am Jessibird:

And Brian, that fact ain't useless at all. If the 84% of us could get it together, what couldn't we do!
  9:33am ? = Paul Sherratt:

( I have gas men filling holes around the house, that's my excuse ! )
  9:33am Jessibird:

Though I just realized you meant UK stats. It's similar here of course, if not worse.
  9:36am listener james from westwood:

Morning, Paul! Watch out for that gas!
  9:37am Brian in UK:

Sad but true Jessibird.
Paul, to quote Paul Carrack. How long has this been going on?
  9:38am still b/p:

Don't remember who I heard telling about two fellows in a discussion about money and having and having not. One guy says all the world's wealth needs to be redistributed with a perfectly equal share for everyone. The other guy says that's no good, because pretty soon the customary severe imbalance would be reestablished. First guy says, "I'm talkin' about every Friday..!"
  9:38am Listener Rey:

Morning Doug and the Drummer Some community.
Nice set there. Galera Tres is one of my favorite prison songs. Ismael Rivera's Las Tumbas is another though that one is more about being released. Oscar Hernandez was on piano in that Libre track. What a great lineup in that band.
  9:40am ? = Paul Sherratt:

lj from westwood.
I will - the coffee just brewed on the stove in what seemed like seconds.

Brian,
Seems like a short life-time.
  9:41am Doug Schulkind:

Listener Rey, so great to hear from you! Yes, Oscar was burning it up.
  9:42am Marmalade Kitty:

hey, I just noticed, the alternate stream is 30 seconds ahead of the regular 128k stream! and is lot's louder! not sure if the audio quality is any better/worse..?

Boo Boo is such a great name!
  9:44am Jessibird:

still b/p, there are other things I'd like to average out. Body fat. Head hair. I have tooo much, would be glad to share. Who's that bird cawing in back of Boo Boo?
  9:44am Doug Schulkind:

The stream is being patched into WFMU, so it is getting compressed additionally in a way the stream alone isn't.
  9:44am Paul Sherratt:

Sometimes you just have to put a face to that voice, Boo.
http://www.youlicense.com/Images/UserImages/pujvxw553wyx4cu3bo4vju55_128772601072640000_blackandtan.jpg
  9:46am Paul Sherratt:

Doug,
I thought I heard a Bongo echoing in that Boo Boo..
  9:47am Marmalade Kitty:

the alternate stream is compressed, or the wfmu stream compressed? sorry..
  9:48am Jessibird:

I just read that George is playing oil drums. Love it!
  9:48am listener james from westwood:

hadn't actually heard the ad that's been using "i'm so tired," so this 1st hearing of it was rather pleasant.
  9:49am miketp:

doug you crack me up. bongo joe been a while since i defected to the rally. intend to have dual listernership. great selections
  9:49am Doug Schulkind:

The alternate stream is getting compressed when it goes through WFMU's broadcast apparatus. If you listen to the Give the Drummer Radio stream, you are hearing it before it undergoes that compression, thus the sound quality is a bit better. Or so I've been told.
  9:50am listener james from westwood:

i stopped listening to the 2 essentially cloned local news stations better than a year ago. no regrets and i hear a lot less of the y----- games & their associated glurge.
  9:50am Brian in UK:

Doug, voice from the back of the class. Is Bongo Joe on Arhoolie?
  9:51am Doug Schulkind:

miketp,
You can listen to anything you durn well please. I'd listen to Scott if I could. SOmetimes, I lurk on his playlist in the middle of my show...
  9:52am Paul Sherratt:

Brian,
Just like that

  9:53am Wellington nz dirty blues:

Mean playlist, its late at night here, the music is perfect and so wholesome. just a think belly of sound and a stomach full of wine! epic and savage playlist...
  9:53am Doug Schulkind:

Typo fixed. Thanks Brian.
  9:54am Marmalade Kitty:

duh! yes of course.. Thanks!
  9:54am Cecile:

Drummer! And welcome WNZDB! They put up that "Wellywood" sign yet? :D
  9:54am Doug Schulkind:

Hey, pass the jug, Wellington NZ!
  9:55am Cecile:

this is true, miketp - he popped in to say hi just last week!
  9:55am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, greetings Cecile!
  9:56am annie:

cecile!!!!!!!!!!
  9:57am Cecile:

morning, Doug. Are you familiar with a book called "The Fabulous Sylvester"?

annnieeeeee!
  9:58am listener james from westwood:

well met, wellington! and good morning miketp and cecile!
  9:59am Brian in UK:

Cecile, been waiting for you to arrive. Did you get Doug's post earlier in the week. I saw it and thought of you.
http://www.thirteen.org/soul/2009/04/14/december-13-1972/
  9:59am Doug Schulkind:

No, Cecile. Tell me about it.
  10:00am Brian in UK:

Fuck digital.
  10:02am Cecile:

It's about the gender-f*ck disco singer Sylvester, who was far more than his disco hits. He was a really serious student of the blues, and would dig up songs from 1920 Biograph musicals to bring to a new hippie audience via his role in SF's drag troupe the Cockettes. For all his glitz, he was seriously interested in how folk, gospel and pop songs became the blues. And the writing is amazing. I would like to transcribe page 38 for you, but i'll just type up the most salient bit in a moment.
  10:03am Cecile:

no, i'll have to take a look at it, Brian.
  10:04am Doug Schulkind:

Ah, THAT Sylvester! I remember seeing the great drummer Jack DeJohnette perform one time wearing a "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real" t-shirt. It was pink with silver glitter. What a baddass.
  10:06am Cecile:

page 38:
As a state of mine [fabulousness] may be best understood by reference to a physical stance: you are fabulous if at any moment you can stop, rest your weight on one leg, and plant the other foot slightly ahead, raise your hands in a a here-I-am-vee with palms flat toward the sky, tilt your head back slightly, look upward into the middle distance , and know that appluase is forthcoming. You are even more fabulous if you do not eve actually take this pose, but simply walk through like with the attitude it implies. Sequins don't hurt. The sea parts for the fabulous.
  10:07am Cecile:

whoops like= life. and applause is mis-spelled
  10:10am Listener Rey:

That is one awesome quote.
  10:11am Hugo:

Sylvester? That rings a bell.

Last track on this one:

http://tinyurl.com/3uxpbau
  10:11am Cecile:

The life is amazing, and the commentary is just as good. Huge props to author Joshua Gamson.
  10:12am Cecile:

that sylvester, for sure!
  10:15am Marmalade Kitty:

de hecho es el momento de bongo y la pandereta!
Bongolingi! :)
  10:16am Cecile:

hugo, DJ Duane likes to play the live version of mighty real, which pretty much ends up in gospel testifying. 10 great minutes.
  10:18am Doug Schulkind:

Oh what I'd pay to have a decent-quality copy of this Roswell Rudd record.
  10:23am Cecile:

It looks like it's been out there on the web. the last one I saw went for 20 euros...
  10:23am miketp:

hey doug a local working drummer lou grassi has played with roswell. nyc folks look up lou he gigs all the time in nyc doing someething all the time good drummer great roswell piece cookin hot

  10:25am Marmalade Kitty:

the drumming is like a train ride chugging along :)
  10:25am Cecile:

Exactly.
  10:26am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for the cold splash of reality, Cecile.

The drummer/train on this date is Martin van Duynhoven.
  10:26am Cecile:

and both the Weather Girls (working as 2 Tons of Fun) and the Pointer Sisters were his backup singers at various times.
  10:28am Cecile:

Doug, I paid the US equivalent of that for Dogon A.D. by Julius Hemphill. Never regretted it, especially since Tim Berne says he'll never be able to get the rights to reissue it.
  10:28am Cecile:

of course, if I were not stupid, I would have picked it up as a 1.99 cutout in the 80s. Ah, record buyers remorse.
  10:30am Doug Schulkind:

I love Dogon A.D. so much, I've bought it three times (including once as a cutout)!
  10:31am Cecile:

It's so deep and funky and yet super rigorous. Dry as a bone sonically. Nothing sounds exactly like it.
  10:32am Amanda:

Good morning, Drummer and everyone! I have arisen late in the morning to this wonderful surprise. Listening on the radio now.
  10:35am ndbob:

Heya Doug and everyone!
  10:35am Doug Schulkind:

Morning Manda!

This track, courtesy of Listener Cecile...
  10:35am Cecile:

YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!
  10:36am listener james from westwood:

morning amanda and ndbob!
  10:37am monica:

jumped on this party bus in cuba and am enjoying the boogie ride. thanks, doug!
  10:38am Doug Schulkind:

One of the advantages of broadcasting from home is I have my CD collection within arm's reach. (The vinyl, is, unfortunately, in the basement.)

Pass me a plantain, Monica!
  10:41am listener james from westwood:

gonna need a pineapple down this side of the bus, monica, if you've got one!
  10:41am Doug Schulkind:

Some Marjoe Gortner coming up in the next set. I refuse to play the 4-year-old Marjoe because it feels like child endangerment. I'll stick with the 8-year-old Marjoe...
  10:41am Cecile:

I could use a cup of that Cuban java, if you've got some, Monica.
10:42am yair yona (tel aviv, earth):

Hi Doug, long time!
  10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Hello Yair! Great to read you.
  10:44am ndbob:

I'm trying to remember who made. this great record I used to have... a child preaching that comes close to white noise.
  10:44am don:

marjoe! one of the most fascinating stories around
  10:46am Doug Schulkind:

ndbob, would that be Steve Reich? You may be conflating two Steve Rich pieces: "It's Gonna Rain" and "Come Out to Show Them." Or maybe you're not!
  10:50am listener james from westwood:

heh, was playing that "it's gonna rain" cut just last night. i know it was an fmu dj who turned me on to that; wish i could recall which.
  10:52am ndbob:

Thinking Doug... I know some of it ended up online - maybe on the 365 Days Project... my brother and sister-in-law went to Wesleyan in the mid 70s.

WHat it this?! I love it!!
Where can I get more?!
  11:00am Ken:

Doug, we just had a glitch here.. internet seems to have gone out for a moment.
  11:00am Cecile:

Flash stream might be down.
  11:00am listener james from westwood:

whoops--we might have reverted to the drummer stream.
  11:01am still b/p:

Marjoe made a map jump here.
  11:01am Doug Schulkind:

Weird blip. The stream got knocked off. Should be back on...
  11:01am listener james from westwood:

iirc, rebooting the router was the cure the last time it was acting fishy...?
  11:01am Cecile:

working now.
  11:02am Ken:

I cant tell what's going on, but we lost all internet here in the building.. your stream seems to be back on, but it's very schizzy
  11:02am Paul Sherratt:

>>The stream got knocked off.

God's Blockade ? Surely not !!
  11:03am Doug Schulkind:

Multiple streams at WFMU are down/up/down. Like the stock market...
  11:04am Listener Rey:

He was not amused by 'If God is Dead'
  11:05am listener james from westwood:

I blame Mitt Romney. Streams are people!
  11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks Listener James. This time it was a WFMU-based problem knocking multiple streams down. But don't think I wasn't ready to reboot. You are a prince for remembering.
  11:07am Liz B.:

Sorry about the internet blips, we're working on it!
  11:08am listener james from westwood:

Sounds solid right now; thanks, Liz and Ken! And Doug, I am nothing if not a lint-trap for minutiae.
  11:10am hubba:

This whole set right now is mending me... real nice, thank you!
  11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Liz, my hero.
  11:11am still b/p:

Glitches happen. Ask the folks that launched the hypersonic glider yesterday.
  11:14am listener james from westwood:

oy veh, and it was the 2nd one to malfunction. can i get my money back on that one?
  11:19am ndbob:

excellent show as always Doug - I'll catch the rest on the archive.
  11:20am Cecile:

mocked? how? that was a great song.
  11:21am Doug Schulkind:

People make fun of the record with the silly white lady singing gospel from her hospital bed.
  11:22am Internet:

I'm one colicky baby.
  11:24am Cecile:

Mean fun? I mean, if I had the record I'd say something like, "the cover is insane, and she's singing from a bed, but it's great."
  11:24am listener james from westwood:

until i can adequately defend my first-ever album purchase being "pac-man fever" by buckner & garcia, i have no right to mock.
  11:25am listener james from westwood:

(you see what i mean about being a lint-trap for minutiae? why can't i forget that?! come, sweet senility!)
  11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Most references I found online to Esther Lee's record referred sole to the conceit of a woman singing from bed, not about her heart-swelling and plaintive delivery.
  11:26am Cecile:

that's pretty awesome, James. I think mine was "The songs of Dr. Doolittle sung by the Happy Time Singers."
  11:27am Cecile:

that's dumb, Doug. I mean, what if we had recordings of Joey Ramone or Dio or John Coltrane from their hospital beds?
  11:28am listener james from westwood:

my 2nd was weird al yankovic's 1st record. my collection grew slowly b/c my mom had a cabinet full of classical & original b'way and movie soundtracks thru which i dug when old enough to be trusted with a tone arm.
  11:29am Doug Schulkind:

Dumb indeed. It's just another example of hipster chic, "dig us digging the lameness" (as comic artists Jim Ryan so aptly put it years ago).
  11:29am Cecile:

You know, those are still the best songs for kids. Easy to sing, and they grow in meaning as they get older.

Happy talk, keep talking happy talk! Talk about things you like to do...
  11:30am Cecile:

I said to someone that he and I could never be hipsters because we actually laughed instead of saying "that's hilarious" and we actually liked things.
  11:31am Cecile:

that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate and even participate in archness and snideness. But when it comes down to it, I'm a big mush-head.
  11:32am Doug Schulkind:

Hipsters hold their actual emotional connections to things at arm's length. Fear as mask.
  11:33am Doug Schulkind:

I have difficulty warming up to the whole embrace of the "outsider" artists thang—in the musical realm especially. Freak show no go.
  11:34am Cecile:

I remember writing about the wonderful Michael Yonkers years ago and flat out refusing to cast him as an outsider. He's one of the most normal people I know. He just has an eccentric way of living. It makes complete sense.
  11:35am listener james from westwood:

masterfully put, doug. life is too goddamn short not to unabashedly love the things that get you from dawn to dusk. f the sneer of irony.
  11:36am Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Doug and all the listeners.
  11:36am Cecile:

even fabio talking with the Neubaten folks about the art parties they used to throw in Berlin yesterday. It was avant-garde, but they had a real glee about it. Refreshing.
  11:36am Doug Schulkind:

Hello Richard!
  11:38am Paul Sherratt:

" Vbenosawenmwighaye "
Brian in Watford, UK, just checking that IS correct ??!...
  11:39am Doug Schulkind:

If that WERE a typo, what might the original have been?!
  11:40am J J:

  11:41am Paul Sherratt:

  11:44am holland oats:

  11:44am Doug Schulkind:
