Listener comments!

  3:02pm
Cheri:

First!!!
  3:02pm
Robert:

Isnt't that Ken's interval signal music?
  3:03pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Thanks for this broadcast WFMU. Greetings to all the crew and listeners.
  3:03pm
Ike:

Y'all sound hollow-ish or something?! Weird sound quality! Fewer drop-outs this yr, I hope!
  3:06pm
Laurie:

Whose dick to I have to suck to get PULP to agree to letting y'all broadcast their set
  3:06pm
Dominick:

Left & right channels are reverse polarity to each other
  3:06pm
Laurie:

I am very happy about Dean Wareham and the Monochrome Set, however.
  3:07pm
Cecile:

one of these years Ima gonna celebrate my birthday in Espana!
  3:07pm
Cheri Pi:

this is so exciting-I feel like I'm there!
  3:09pm
Cecile:

Yeah, sounds like in Europe it's like it's the early 80s - where hipsters still dance.
  3:09pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Agreed with cheri pi.
  3:10pm
Snortley:

Volume is way low on the stream. Needs to be potted up or normalized.
  3:10pm
Aaron in JCity:

WOOOOOOO
  3:11pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Algodón Egipcio is the only artist of Venezuela at Primavera Sound. Please, check it when you can:

http://algodonegipcio.bandcamp.com/album/la-lucha-constante
  3:11pm
Stanley:

Flash is working just fine...
  3:13pm
Ike:

Get out the sonic screwdriver -- we might need to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow!
  3:13pm
Adam in Portland:

Barcelona, Barcelona is killing its youth.
  3:16pm
Cecile:

this is great. Maybe Marc Almond will jump up on stage.

But seriously? I needed this.
  3:17pm
Adam in Portland:

@Aaron: Hahaha! Glad the Max's "WHOOO Guy" seems to have been held up by customs.
  3:18pm
Dominick:

mp3 128k & Flash stereo streams are "out of phase"
because of this, mp3 32k & Real mono streams playing the difference between left and right instead of the sum
  3:19pm
Swami:

Suiciiiiiiiiiiiiide! How I've missed thee!
  3:20pm
Sister Hairy Hymen:

HAIL is this supposed to be3 this distorted
  3:20pm
Liz B.:

We're working on the mono issue. If you are listening w/ real audio hang in there. Should sound better in a sec
  3:20pm
bee boo:

flip the phase on one of the channels...
  3:22pm
Adam in Portland:

23 minutes over Bayonne.
  3:23pm
Sister Hairy Hymen:

Im using the 128 stream
  3:24pm
Adam in Portland:

I love Suicide as audio terrorists, but the phase shifting IS OOOOF.
  3:25pm
Sister Hairy Hymen:

this is sum tripped out stuff
  3:26pm
Adam in Portland:

What would Ken and Andy had to say about THIS on this week's Seven Second Delay?
  3:26pm
Liz B.:

I would recommend listening to AAC+ stream if you have having issues listening in mono. We can't fix it just yet without totally interrupting the broadcast.
http://wfmu.org/wfmu_aacplus.pls
  3:26pm
Sister Hairy Hymen:

what time is Grinderman playing or did i miss them?
  3:27pm
Adam in Portland:

Thanks, Liz B!
  3:27pm
Laurie:

They're up next.

Liz B., is there a snowball's chance we'll get to hear PULP?
  3:27pm
Ike:

Yeah the AAC+ doesn't sound bad. (Doesn't work on every player though, but it works on every GOOD player.)
  3:28pm
Am I the only one...:

who is hearing everything in slow motion?
  3:29pm
Cheri Pi:

Grinderman is playing at approx. 3:50 EST.
  3:29pm
Dominick:

AAC+ stream also has inverted polarity between left and right channels
  3:29pm
Sister Hairy Hymen:

THANK YOU Liz, I think its how this supoosed to sound?
  3:30pm
other david:

you can flip the channels with vlc
  3:30pm
Sister Hairy Hymen:

Damn and WMFU is going to have them live?
  3:30pm
Cheri Pi:

This must be the phase shifting sound they're talking about.
  3:32pm
Adam in Portland:

The world's set to Streetcleaner.
  3:32pm
Sister Hairy Hymen:

Ill check back at that time this is getting spaced out
  3:33pm
still b/p:

At this tempo (elongato molasso) you only need 3 songs, and boom -- album!
  3:34pm
bee boo:

sample rate conversion issue
  3:34pm
raga:

if you think Frankie Teardrop is creepy at normal speed, just wait! Hi Liz! Hi Scott!
  3:34pm
bobw:

the remote crew is working on it. expect to be fixed in a few minutes.
  3:37pm
Ike:

True @Dominick, but it sounds waaaay better than the mono streams like Ogg which are REALLY messed up. Should I just put my left-hand speaker on the right side and vice versa, for now? That doesn't sound much different.
  3:39pm
bobw:

there you go! all fixed!
  3:39pm
Dominick:

Got it! Thanks
  3:39pm
Liz B.:

SOunding better now??? Lemme know, I think we fixed it!
  3:39pm
other david:

wooooo, great work :)
  3:40pm
Dominick:

Thanks!
  3:40pm
Adam in Portland:

Much, much better! Thanks, good people.
  3:41pm
andymorphic:

what a way to start
  3:41pm
Adam in Portland:

Alan's voice is giving me chills. Wonderful.
  3:42pm
Sean Daily:

Not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  3:42pm
Robert:

I'm trying to model in my head what the difference between left & right channels should sound like. If you had one sound source in the middle, it would come out silent.
  3:43pm
Snortley:

An occasional buzz+dropout, but otherwise sounding good.
  3:44pm
other david:

lol:
"A most auspicious beginning to WFMU's live coverage at Primavera: Einsturzende Neubauten member waits for Liz and Brian to go on mic, begins to pelt them inside the tent with debris. Payback for all those years of the band's mispronounciation on WFMU served!" -wfmu facebook page
  3:44pm
Robert:

Similarly, there'd be a virtual interference pattern of blank areas for any given freq. at intervals going across.
  3:44pm
Ike:

Was it meant to be all slowed-down like that before the fix? I liked it. That was what I assume it would sound like to take acid... at the bottom of the ocean. While being eaten by a large eyeless fish.
  3:44pm
Liz B.:

There is some sort of weird phase thing going on with our compressor. You'll get some buzzes/dropouts every once in a while. We've got one more idea...
  3:45pm
Cheri Pi:

the drum was at a normal pace so I didn't question the vocals-but it was pretty weird sounding even for Suicide.
  3:45pm
Robert:

Don't fix it! It'll be like Kamikaze Diane's slow 45s or the backwards albums I forgot who used to play.
  3:46pm
Cheri Pi:

Don't let Neubauten touch the knobs Liz!
  3:47pm
Paull:

I remember seeing Suicide live in London in the summer of 1978. Still the best concert I ever saw, but I am enjoying tonights show too!
  3:48pm
BT:

We got a definitive no from Pulp, Sorry to say.
  3:48pm
Adam in Portland:

Wow, Paul! Willing to share some anecdotes?
  3:49pm
Adam in Portland:

Sorry, Paull.
  3:49pm
other david:

Hmmph, Jarvis is getting a right frowning at next time he's in town...
  3:49pm
Dominick:

Hey Robert,
When left & right signals are "out of phase" (technically incorrect but most common description) a mono signal panned to the center sounds like it's coming from outside the space between the speakers
  3:49pm
BT:

we're sending Neubauten over to deal with Jarvis.
  3:51pm
other david:

hehehe, mr. bargeld is not a man i would wish to cross
  3:51pm
Laurie:

ha, I would like to see that, Brian
  3:54pm
Paull:

Sure Adam. I was 17 and it was my first holiday without my parents. We were supposed to ride bicycles in Englands South-East-coast, but we ended up in a campsite near London. According to a friend The Marquee Club was a legendary venue, so we went there to see a show. My friend hated the band, for me it was an enlightening moment. That Marquee-concert was released in 1983 or so on ROIR Cassettes and what I understand it was the only show of that Suicide tour they had any succes with the audience.
  3:56pm
Robert:

Thanks, Dominic. It's the equivalent of stereo pictures if you present the left image to the right eye & vice versa. Stuff looks sort of hollow.
  3:56pm
andymorphic:

and grinderman next.....wow
  3:57pm
Cheri Pi:

Seriously though-are you going to flip a coin for who has to announce Neubauten? That's a lot of pressure to be under, especially if they're secretly listening in to make sure you pronounce it correctly. They'll Know!
  3:57pm
Robert:

Left + right and left - right are the ways they're encoded, not a literal rendering of the sound.
  3:58pm
Richard from Venezuela:

and Glenn Branca Ensemble. Brutal!!
  3:59pm
andymorphic:

and branca...yes!
  3:59pm
other david:

Is the atmosphere at the fest ok - with all the stuff happening in Barcelona?
  4:00pm
Adam in Portland:

Thanks, Paull!
  4:02pm
andymorphic:

great song!!!!!
  4:03pm
Richard from Venezuela:

sounds good. really good. Nick Cave maestro.
  4:05pm
weasel walter:

oops. missed suicide. the WOOOO max's guy is long dead. he was some old taper guy that showed up to the shows and made all that noise to ruin the tapes!
  4:05pm
Paull:

Did you ever hear the recording of that concert, Adam? It is still amazing. I just found this link to the recording of that show:
http://totalwire.blogspot.com/2009/10/suicide-half-alive.html
It has a link to an mp3-file on Sharebee
  4:05pm
glenn:

i had the pleasure of meeting blixa bargeld many years ago when nick cave played in toronto, and he was a complete sweetheart.
  4:06pm
Richard from Venezuela:

weasel, nice to came here. A fan from Venezuela. Greetings man.
  4:08pm
weasel walter:

cheers. grinderman is actually kind of rocking. i'm surprised!
  4:10pm
andymorphic:

warren ellis !!!
  4:10pm
other david:

I only saw Grinderman once... and I don't remember a great deal due to whatever it was I took beforehand
  4:10pm
other david:

But Nick always puts on an epic performance, like a deranged preacher
  4:14pm
andymorphic:

never been a bad seeds fan but birthday and griderman...always get the adrenalin pumping
  4:16pm
Sister Hairy Hymen:

This is not grinderman
  4:16pm
Laurie:

¿¿¿¿Qué????
  4:16pm
glenn:

i tend to agree with andymorphic.
  4:16pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Russian red?
  4:17pm
joshua:

Indeed!
  4:17pm
other david:

aint that the tooth :/
  4:17pm
ambersand diego:

I suspect audio is being fixed.
  4:18pm
@:

this is getting old
  4:18pm
Adam in Portland:

Thanks for the info, WW, and no, Paul I have not yet, but will now. Thank you.
  4:18pm
Meghan:

I am assuming technical difficulty...... why in the middle of GRINDERMAN!!! I heart Mr. Cave..... If only Grinderman and Einsturzende Neubauten got together..... for a combo....
  4:19pm
joshua:

Grinderman: live on WFMU's coverage of Primavera Sound (3 song excerpt so listen N*O*W!) ...via WFMU's twitter
  4:20pm
Tom:

WTF? Two songs? More Grinderman, please, oh, well, I guess not.
  4:20pm
Joe Mulligan:

can't wait for 0PN (Oneohtrix Pt. Never!) have fun y'all!
  4:20pm
Richard from Venezuela:

DJ Meghan?. Hi Meghan :)
  4:22pm
Adam in Portland:

A great deal/all of the broadcast parameters are probably set by the artists. Hi Meghan!
  4:22pm
Meghan:

Yep! Hi Richard! Como esta?
  4:22pm
Meghan:

Hi Adam! hehe.....
  4:23pm
Liz B.:

We did one more quick fix and hopefully it's now sounding like stereo on the stereo streams and like normal-speed mono on the mono streams. Lemme know if anything gets fishy again. Hopefully we have overcome the dropout probz, too.
  4:23pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Bien. Enjoying el concierto.
  4:23pm
Carmichael:

Hi Spanish people and non-stereo processors. Just catching up with this shit now. My noise sounds kinda processed and smushed a little, but it's a stereo smushing. Oh, it's the 20k stream.
  4:23pm
Adam in Portland:

I feel like going to a Grinderman show AND watching Wings of Desire NOW! Haha b
  4:24pm
Meghan:

If you have never seen Grinderman live, it is very much like a Bad Seeds show. So basically it is win win!
  4:25pm
glenn:

meghan can help with the fishy problems. ha ha.
  4:25pm
Adam in Portland:

I have, and loved it! Let's all go!
;-)
  4:25pm
Cheri Pi:

Who does the sound for these bands?
  4:26pm
Adam in Portland:

Harold Camping.
  4:26pm
Meghan:

Glenn, I am not in Spain or at the station.... so sadly I suffer along with you all!
  4:26pm
hamburger / london:

hell of an engineer
  4:27pm
Adam in Portland:

He has his own polarity problems.
  4:28pm
Mike East:

whoa - hold it - Grinderman is Nick Cave? I thought it just sounded like him. Man, I am outta the loop. All this time I had no idea.
  4:29pm
Internet:

Mike East, hellllllllllllllllllooooooooooo.
  4:30pm
glenn:

the loop is overrated.
  4:30pm
Cheri Pi:

Yeah Mike East-even I know that-and I don't care for Mr. Cave's vocal stylings.
  4:32pm
Adam in Portland:

A shout to Billy Jam in the midst of all this mirth.
  4:33pm
other david:

and Andy n' Frangry, bless their cotton socks.
  4:34pm
Mike East:

@Internet - screw. There's a reason I don't have a computer at home and its you. @Cheri Pi - I honestly thought they were just "inspired" by him.
  4:34pm
Adam in Portland:

Indeed, and Johnny Muller (sp?) for that matter.
  4:36pm
other david:

Heh, I'll bet Spike is at Primavera, with his newly acquired child
  4:36pm
Adam in Portland:

...and John Wesley Shipp.
  4:37pm
Adam in Portland:

Catherine Baked Ziti? Hahaha, ugh.
  4:39pm
other david:

Nice stuff from Ducktails
  4:41pm
Internet:

I'm sorry. I'm used to just, you know, being there, man.
  4:43pm

Adam in Portland:

Jimi Hand-Trucks.
  4:45pm
glenn:

have you seen kathleen in the third season of californication? it's not pretty.
  4:45pm
Carmichael:

How much time do each of these bands get? Seems like we're flying through the groups. Hey Carm, I'll bet there's a website somewhere with the schedule.
  4:47pm
Webmeister General:

@Carm:

http://www.primaverasound.com/ps/?page=home&lang=en
  4:48pm
Carmichael:

List of bands, but the timetable page is empty.
  4:48pm
Adam in Portland:

Have you seen Cybil Shepard in Last American Picture Show? It's so pretty.
  4:49pm
Carmichael:

The Winona Riders.
  4:49pm
glenn:

yes it is. and a young jeff bridges, too.
  4:49pm
Webmeister General:

They're using the same schedule as Woodstock. Worked then.
  4:50pm
Adam in Portland:

And sun!
  4:51pm
jaycjay:

@Carmichael, on the timetable page you have to click through to the various venues.
  4:51pm
other david:

and maybe the protestors outside will knock down the barriers ala woodstock too
  4:51pm
glenn:

probably without the brown acid, though.
  4:52pm
Adam in Portland:

The barriers of the miiiiiiiiiiiind, maaaaaaaaaan.
  4:52pm
jaycjay:

But also just to be clear, WFMU isn't always carrying everythihg. That is, the two grinderman songs wasn't the whole set.
  4:53pm
other david:

woooooord

also, on topic, this is a great set
  4:53pm
Adam in Portland:

Just so we get the full Ke$ha.
  4:55pm
Paull:

Unfortunately it wasn't all love and music in Barcelona today: http://youtu.be/XFJbDdVBa2o
  4:56pm
other david:

aye Paull :(

news here in Ireland isnt even showing it... for good reason, we're more boned than Spain.. don't want crazy ideas like voicing discontent being put in our heads
  4:58pm
glenn:

same thing happened in toronto last year.
  4:58pm
Sybil:

Oh, sorry, you'll have to excuse them, they're from Barcelona.
  4:59pm
Robert:

Stick to the instruments, whoever you are. The vocal was...let's say non-musical.
  5:03pm
Yabby from Yablelin:

HI WFMU, we LOVE this concert, Liz Berg is sooo cool!
  5:03pm
Yabby from Yablelin:

We are here having ice cream.
  5:04pm
Laurie:

PULP :((((((((((((((((((((

  5:05pm
Yabby from Yablelin:

Pulp Orange Juice, Swans, Brian Grinderman
  5:05pm
other david:

Jarvis doesn't want to let the common people hear, the jerk.
  5:06pm
ben drinken:

very exciting and fun to have wfmu broadcast this. but like not being at the ball game and hearing it on the radio it is great to hear from the folks on the ground and reporting what's going on. because as you know it is hard to reproduce the sound at such live events. the part i love the most is the DJ's from wfmu who are there talking about the event.
  5:06pm
Yabby from Yablelin:

We are having fun with the music and food, and legos
  5:06pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Glenn Branca. Brutal!!
  5:06pm
glenn:

the shat's version is better, anyway.
  5:06pm
Yabby from Yablelin:

you are nice Benny
  5:07pm
jeff-m:

:) is all
  5:07pm
Yabby from Yablelin:

INROPOOL are a splendid group, their singer lived in new jersey.
  5:07pm
other david:

nicely said ben, best thing about WFMU is every dj is an enthusiast first
  5:08pm
Carmichael:

Damo Suzuki is listed!
  5:08pm
ben drinken:

what kind of food are people having at the event. must be some wonderful stuff. even the cheap food must be good at such an event.
  5:08pm
Adam in Portland:

I suspect if Clay Pigeon ever makes it over for this he would pull in some fascinating attendees cut from wholly unique cloth.
  5:10pm
Bork:

Ever hear PILP with Jarvis replaced by Lydon?
  5:10pm
Richard from Venezuela:

I hope the glenn's blessing to put this set on FMA.
  5:11pm
?:

Cheap? food-good?? not at festivals!
  5:11pm
other david:

this is sounding brilliant already
  5:11pm
glenn:

huh?
  5:12pm
glenn:

hillside festival in guelph has awesome, not expensive food.
  5:12pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Glenn Branca, hahahaha.
  5:13pm
john (FMG) London:

Branca is awesome.

The food when I went a few years ago was ok, nothing special.
  5:16pm
Paull:

Wow, Brance is playing with a real young band, if that is the band in that photo. Sounds pretty good
  5:17pm
ben drinken:

i have had some really good food at festivals in the U.S. made by folks who sneak in and make their own food street style to sell such as burritos and such. Other delicious food. I just imagine that in Spain people would be doing the same thing but with even more yummy food.
  5:18pm
bill:

hoo boy is this awesome
  5:18pm
Rodney:

This Glenn Branca set is fantastic.

Once again, these sets are always not in their entirety, some only approved for partial airing, but check on the Free Music Archive later, as a number of these may exist in their entirety down the line. We have so much much here at the fest that we're being selective in some of the full length ones (when we can bring 'em).
  5:27pm
other david:

BT - it's massively appreciated, thank you :)
  5:28pm
bill:

thx bt
  5:28pm

Gracias BT.
  5:28pm

Alternatively, we could just try using good judgment about what to write, if we have any.

Julie - yep, I've been at festivals where they've played and sort of ignored them due to the insane crowds being too distracting, but hearing them here... it's just excellent - the studio stuff sounds too clinical, it's good, but live their music has a whole other quality

As a Le Carre dork, I really hope Interpol are used on the sound track for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy... if a band encapsulates that dark cold war sound, it was them (and Joy Division, of course!)

Liz B.:

There are no protests at the festival, but in the greater city of Barcelona (and also in Madrid). Lots of political unrest as the youth are fed up with corruption and the high rate of unemployment.
  9:13pm
the fly on the wal:

its not beeping anymore
  9:15pm
other david:

@liz - any chance of the youth knocking down the barricades and turning this into woodstock? :P

It was funny, the news here in Ireland didn't show any of the protests in Spain - and by any measure, we're more boned than they are, but I don't think we have it in us to protest :(
  9:16pm
whatzeeheck:

what's going on with the stream? are we hearing a live set or some talk over music?
  9:17pm
panda bear:

it can happen, i remember new years in la rampbla, bottles being thrown
  9:18pm
Liz B.:

More on the Spanish protests here:
http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/05/18/spain.protests/index.html

I doubt anyone here will bust down barricades, folks here seem to follow the rules.
  9:18pm
Robert:

That tower on the beach should be draped with fireworks and turned into a castillo.
  9:19pm
Scott W:

@whatzeeheck, what are you hearing?? anyone else think they're hearing something that aint 1/2 japanese?
  9:19pm
Dominique Strauss-Kahn:

@other david: We'll get everyone to pay back their loans in the end. We don't want anyone getting away with anything, after all.
  9:20pm
PGB:

Technical difficulties, folks! Please bear with us. We're investigating.
  9:20pm
whatzeeheck:

THE BEEPS AND HALF JAPANESE ARE BACK!
  9:27pm
Ike:

Aaaaaand they're back! But is this going to happen a lot again this yr? Why not send (via FTP or whatever) pre-recorded sets to board ops and play them straight from JC? They're pre-recorded anyway so... doesn't that make sense? No?
  9:27pm
panda bear:

hehehehe
  9:27pm
cosmic matrix:

Julie:

  9:31pm
Liz B.:

Sorry guys, actually had some problem on our JC end. Hopefully these issues will be few and far between. Only had a few drops over the course of 6 hrs, and we are broadcasting from thousands of miles away.
  9:33pm
other david:

The crew over in Barca are doing an epic job, it's 3:30am, don't take joking about the beeps seriously - it's wonderful that you're bringing us this music and it's really appreciated :)

Julie and the folks back at home base, equally, great job... the music is brilliant - thank you for working to share it!
  9:34pm
whatzeeheck:

yeah we're not complaining, we're just complaining :P
  9:36pm
PGB:

Oh yes. And we banished the beeps and boops, too.
  9:39pm

IN HONOUR OF THIS TRIUMPH, WE BRING YOU, HALF JAPANESE
  9:40pm
Liz B.:

It's actually GOOD to know when things sound funny so we can trace the problem and fix it faster, so the reports of beeps, etc are very helpful! We want to make this an enjoyable listening experience for everyone. Plus, troubleshooting at 3:40am keeps us awake.
  9:42pm
other david:

Do you guys get a hotel room to sleep in or are you in a campsite?
  9:42pm
other david:

please tell me you all have rooms :P

  9:43pm

There are 6 of us crammed in a 2 bedroom apartment, thanks for asking! I guess it's like camping indoors. Plus there was a plumbing problem at 9am, just as we were all entering REM.
  9:44pm
whatzeeheck:

  9:46pm
cheri:

i'm sorry about this julie but i have know what do you think of jeanette jacobs??
  9:46pm
other david:

6 in 2 bedroom apartment, preferable to sleeping in a festival campsite - trust me! been there... had the drunks fall on top of me... and people on god knows how many pills climb into my tent asking for cigarettes!
  9:49pm
other david:

still, i know it's no luxury, but it's more than worth it - great festival :)
  9:50pm
whatzeeheck:

6 people, 1 room...to me that sounds like a lot of fun!

  10:58pm
A. in Essex Co. NJ:

@PGB so what was that music you played during the drop-out at around 10:10ish?
  10:58pm
PGB:

@A. in Essex Co. NJ Ack! I've been minding the signal and missed your query here. I filled in for the signal gap with some selections from Dan Melchior's "The Covert Stomp" on the Hate label. (Earlier, I played the entirely not-Primavera sound of music from Jacques Tati movies.) Hope that helps!
  10:59pm
A. in Essex Co. NJ:

Thx PGB!

  11:41pm

Liz B., even with the prominent disclaimers I liked the effect, giving the feel of a continuous event.
  11:43pm
Liz B.:

It's more of a presentation of what's been going on in the past 24-36 hrs, with some live chatter in between straight from our little tent here at the fest. Glad you guys dig it! This is our last set tonight, more tomorrow starting at 3pm ET.
  11:43pm
