Pernambuco, a coastal city in northeastern Brazil... I knew someone who'd been born there...
  11:04am

  11:08am
mrmucho:

another vote here for the 'music experts' show, was good fun
  11:08am
Peter:

I was just listening to Clark's "American Dreamer" CD, and looked at my watch, and turned it off to catch the show. LOL
  11:27am
Peter:

Hooray for "Deeper Shade of Soul". I picked up a couple of Barretto CDs last year. Thank you.

I first learned of this song from Urban Dance Squad's sampling of it
  11:30am
JMD:

Dang, nice! I've been humming this song all week long and kept swearing I was going to get around to putting it on. Thanks for taking it off my checklist for me!
  11:30am
Jay/ London U.K:

hey have the cars got a new L.P. out ?
  11:35am
Abed:

@mrmucho
what is this 'music experts' show you speak of?
  11:37am
Jay/ London U.K:

yes the new L.P is out :) http://www.rockandrolltshirts.com/RNR_Store/The_Cars_Music/Cars-Move-Like-This-CD
  11:39am
Abed:

Wasn't exactly frothing at the mouth for a Cars reunion.
  11:45am
paul:

Gil Scott-Heron has died. And Kylie Minogue is 43 today. Time marches on.
  11:47am
Abed:

Yeah, Gil is gone. "Lady Day and Jhn Coltrane" would be good to hear.
  11:48am
Jay/ London U.K:

@abed everyone to there own i guess
  11:50am
Abed:

@jay
Definitely, I just wish they had come back with something more compelling than their new one, which doesn't sound too great.
  11:50am
Peter:

This is a song about pig flatulence? I would rather have heard the un-censored version of "Good Girls Don't"
  11:50am
Bob:

Loved the music experts show, keep em coming. Too bad it wasn't this week, perhaps a group of people could explain the overwhelming outpouring of love for Gil Scott-Heron. Don't get him, never did.
  11:50am
paul:

Gu-loshes.
  11:53am
paul:

Saw GSH and Brian Jackson live back in the 70's. Pretty powerful.
  11:55am
Jay/ London U.K:

@abed yes think you are right .. but still good they are still out there
me thinks
  12:01pm
paul:

It's all pretty subjective. I don't get Radiohead or understand their immense popularity.
  12:01pm
geleni fontaine:

a huge part of that outpouring is heron's basic radical message of empowerment to african-american and social justice communities. his work uplifted many people and overrides the circumstances of his death. no surprise that people remember him with much love and grief *
  12:03pm
geleni fontaine:

ha! and i'm a huge radiohead fan, too :)
  12:04pm
paul:

lol :)
  12:05pm
Abed:

I don't think Gil was a great writer but he had a kind of jazz/soul/topical thing that is his own, plus he's plenty soulful and funky too.
  12:05pm
paul:

This has got to go on the next MS marathon premium disc.
  12:07pm
Bob:

I agree that it's sad, and the drug point is well-made. I've just been sort of scratching my head over the immense reaction on facebook, for example. I recognize he was an innovator of sorts, but a great artist? Maybe I'm missing something. He seemed to be kind of off-key much of the time for instance. I guess that wasn't really the important part of his work. ...whatever, play some Nick Lowe.
  12:09pm
Parq:

Bob, either you get it or you don't, and there's not much to say about it. I'm not a Radiohead fan, either (hi Paul), and the list of WFMUish bands I don't get would be exceeded only by the list of WFMU-incorrect cheesy pop efforts I totally dig. Whaddaya gonna do?
  12:09pm
seang:

Whitey on the moon by Gil is worth a listen
  12:13pm
Bob:

We can all agree that Radiohead are a sham
  12:15pm
Wipper:

We can ALL agree that Shirley Ellis is the bomb!
  12:15pm
drr:

"...and Whitey's on the moon" is such an appropriate response for so many things.
  12:15pm
Cheese:

We're what's for dinner.
  12:18pm
blsoo:

Robin sounded a little like Spazz
  12:19pm
Bob:

The Casuals song just saved the day. Perhaps my favorite Casuals song ever.
  12:20pm
Bad Ronald:

I second the request for some Basher. btw - I heard that EC killed it at the Beacon this week. RIP Gil, he's OK in my book.
  12:25pm
paul:

Almost went to see Nick last year. But he is oh so mellow these days. I realize he's not a crazy popster anymore, but the energy is just missing. Still a great songwriter. Among the best. BTW happy belated 70th to Bobby Zimmerman.
  12:34pm
paul:

Every live appearance I've seen of Nick in the last five years....on the tube, but the video don't lie....is nice and sweet, but fairly lifeless. True, I was not at the last show. I hope I am wrong. That would be a nice surprise. Glad we agree on Radiohead.
  12:35pm
Snake:

epic fail! all that work!
  12:41pm
Michael:

Hey Snake - you are an epic rude person
  12:44pm
Juke Joint Jonny:

Last Nick Lowe show: unbelievably great and changed my life.
uh… just like every other Nick Lowe show I've seen, come to think about it.
  12:44pm
Parq:

I'm sure Nick does a great show, but I never saw him back in the day, and I don't want the current Nick to be the only one I've ever seen. I still remember the shock of seeing the Who for the first time when they were already past their prime. No thanks.
  12:44pm
Snake:

Haha. I was only kidding. Enjoying the show!
  12:45pm
paul:

Everyone chill and have a great holiday weekend. Another great show.
  12:45pm
Bob:

I also don't get the people who think Nick suddenly turned into a maker of old man music. What he's been doing the last decade or so is pretty much what he's always done since the Brinsley Schwarz days. If anything, the trashy, low-budget singles from the late 70's were the aberration in his career. It all sounds like Nick Lowe music to me. I think he's aged better than just about any artist you can name. He's a class act.
  12:47pm
paul:

Nick, Edmunds, Parker, Costello, Zevon back in the day were unbeatable.
  12:47pm
Bad Ronald:

Some early footage -
Live Stiffs - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcie3yePbFk

Born fighters - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V7WubQ1uiY
  12:48pm
Bad Ronald:

... for after Michael's show...
  12:49pm
paul:

No doubt he's a class act. Way up there. But I love the trashy low-budget singles and early 80's albums that no one bought.
  12:49pm
Snake:

Haha!
  12:54pm
Parq:

Let's put it this way; if you had never seen the B52s, Devo or XTC before, would you go and see them for the first time now? I realize that, as to XTC, that's a hypothetical question.
  12:56pm
drr:

Gil Scott-Heron and Shirley Ellis: some similarities--
Both had two hits that could be called gimmicky (Shirley: Name Game, Nitty Gritty; Gil: Revolution, Whitey's on the Moon).
Both had a unique thing based on hip wordplay.
Both were really funny without playing it for laughs.
  1:01pm
Bob:

Did that guy really say half of Hank Williams' catalog was crappy?
