  3:31am

  3:31am
Julie:

  3:51am
Julie:

Jane is here too :)
  3:52am
helsingfred:

Did anyone else notice how every time Genesis lost a member, their music got worse but the band got more popular?
  3:52am
Julie:

Yeah they got very poppy in the 80s. I do like the early Phil stuff though. He sounds very Gabriel on some of it.
  3:53am
Marmalade Kitty:

Genesis get a lot of stick
  3:57am
Kostas:

Hey you, Lovely Voice! It's been some time I haven't listened to the show, but now I'm Back! Keep talking!!!!!
  3:59am
demo:

And poor Richi Heavens
  4:02am
helsingfred:

Wing it !
  4:07am
Elwyn:

I don't even know if we participate in Record Store Day in Australia. If we do, I couldn't be bothered going out in torrential rain while recovering from bronchitis.
  4:10am
Julie:

Elwyn, I think it's an US thing. Uh no! No rain with the bronchitis. I hope you're all better now!
  4:11am
helsingfred:

RSD is a Faceborg thing :) it was here in Finland too I think
  4:18am
Julie:

Is Faceborg a place or a funny name for Facebook?
  4:19am
Elwyn:

Most of the bronchitis is gone.

Mmm... according to the RSD website, Sydney was participating in it. I'm a little surprised because I went to my local record store a few days before RSD and didn't remember any advertising for RSD.
  4:19am
Matt from Springfield:

Morning Julie!
Back In Black! Heavy opening set! If I had my computer and FMU on all night....suffice to say I would have woken up long ago!
  4:21am
Julie:

Hiya Matt! Yeah doing all LP's means I couldn't find any symphonic metal, so I went with AC/DC!
  4:22am
Elwyn:

Julie, do yo like Mastadon? I hear they had a RSD split vinyl with ZZ Top.
  4:22am
helsingfred:

Faceborg? Resistance is FUBAR. You will be agglomerated.
  4:24am
Julie:

@Elwyn I don't know them.
@Matt Sorry no PSB for you tonight :( Couldn't find
  4:24am
Matt from Springfield:

There's a website to go with Record Store Day:
http://www.recordstoreday.com/Venues

Nuts! There were a few stores around me that were participating! I thought it was a NYC-area thing, this year was the first I ever heard of it. WFMU clues me in to so much...but it IS an annual thing, so everyone check with your local stores next April :)
  4:25am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: It's a great song for any time--do consider it for another show.
  4:26am
Julie:

And i was doing so well! Usually those 7" with two songs on one side are 33 rpm phooey
  4:26am
Matt from Springfield:

WOW--Kate's one live tour! And in Japan! And Beatles! Hells yeah!
  4:26am
helsingfred:

I invite everyone to join a Faceborg group I set up and post some noisy stuff, "A Reference of Female Fronted Punk 1977-1989" http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=389879717243
  4:26am
pierre:

hahaha… Kate Bush slowed sounded interesting
  4:28am
Elwyn:

I have to confess something. It's been years since I put a record or CD on, sat back on the couch and did nothing else but listen to it.
  4:29am
Matt from Springfield:

@pierre: I myself was wondering if that was the record, or just one of her low voices, imitating Paul's original deep vocal :)
@helsingfred: I know Terre T would love that--send the link to her.
  4:29am
Julie:

Yeah it's weird the music on that was so high-pitched it sounded right when I cued it!
  4:30am
Matt from Springfield:

Kate followed by Liz--lovely!
I never heard of "High Monkey Monk"--they have a bunch of rare promo items and EPs, most of which have been reissued but some still might not be.
  4:32am
helsingfred:

Siouxsie! pit-a-pat pit-a-pat :) You don't have any Creatures do you? That was some cool stuff. They did a "Godzilla" video that was great but I've only seen it once, can't find it anywhere.
  4:33am
Julie:

@Matt Yeah that was unreleased at least at the time that promo came out.
  4:33am
Julie:

@Hels I'm sure there's Creatures here, but I wouldn't want to play it after play Ms Sioux. I'll keep them in mind though!
  4:36am
helsingfred:

Budgie has played now & then with Jessie Evans, that's some good stuff too
  4:41am
ausmanx:

hey, everyone. RSD did indeed happen here in Australia, but it was pretty lame. trouble is, record shops (like bookshops) are in big trouble here cos the US dollar is so terrible. everyone's just ordering from Amazon etc and the shops are dropping like flies. very sad, and probably irreversible.
  4:41am
Julie:

Hmm..I don't know Jessie Evans
  4:41am
Julie:

@Ausmanx Shops dropping here too!
  4:44am
ausmanx:

yeah, shocking, it cuts both ways... we can't compete with US online stores, but US stores can't bring in imports cos the dollar's so bad. thanks a lot Dubya and your mates on Wall St. not that Obama's much better...
  4:45am
Elwyn:

Yeah, most of the time I just order online. Things like eBay can offer a really good range and ease of finding stuff and new.
On the other hand, the local record store I go to has their stock and prices listed on their web site so I went in and bought some Galaxie 500 for cheaper than eBay.

I'm happy about the strong Australian dollar at the moment because I have been buying Star Wars costume bits from the USA.
  4:47am
helsingfred:

JE sings and plays sax, pretty cool rhythms. Here's a nifty video with a sort of Mexico-goes-outer-space theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePZHYHSCRBE
  4:48am
Julie:

@Elwyn I do too, for new releases. But whenever I travel, record stores are my first stop!
  4:51am
Matt from Springfield:

Hetch Hetchy? That name stands out, first time I heard of them! Is this late 80s/early 90s?
  4:51am
helsingfred:

defnitly a siouxsie influenced set :)
  4:51am
Elwyn:

There's a romanticism of record stores that I love.

Personally, it's not very literal but I remember reading a story about how Alan and Mimi from Low would spend time together looking at the latest releases from SST.
  4:51am
Julie:

There's no date. My guess is 80s.
  4:53am
Julie:

1990!
  4:54am
Matt from Springfield:

There ya go! I'll believe it!
  4:54am
Julie:

Yeah 1990 is kinda like the 80s anyhow
  4:56am
Matt from Springfield:

@helsingfred: This set has very good "flow" in general--from Kate to Cocteau Twins to Siouxsie and all the other alt rock and shoegaze of the same vein after. Love it Julie!
  4:57am
Julie:

@Matt Thank you!
  5:01am
(-_-):

love to see bands are still producing 7'' singles. got to admit haven't bought vinyl since 2000. scary. what happened to the 'save the vinyl' campaign?
  5:01am
helsingfred:

Shoegaze? Without Lush? HERESY! :-D
  5:02am
Julie:

haha..I didn't think to look for a Lush record, sorry!
  5:03am
Julie:

We still get lots of vinyl at the station, and even some cassettes.
  5:04am
Matt from Springfield:

Lush would be great as well! Julie's played them before!

Brian Turner has occasionally announced "Direct-to-cassette" releases--evidently to "hipsters" cassettes are the new vinyl.
  5:05am
Elwyn:

Yes, some Lush please.
  5:06am
Eric L:

Your show is the only thing keeping me from going completely insane right now
ps. I am not crazy, on drugs, or anything like that
  5:08am
helsingfred:

Your B/G music is cool. I remember some other WFMU DJ saying that when you do a voiceover it is absolutely ESSENTIAL to have B/G music...
  5:09am
Sam:

If you listen to FMU you are obviously on drugs. All of us are.
  5:10am
Matt from Springfield:

@Eric: It's okay, it's okay. All regular FMU listeners can relate :)
  5:11am
helsingfred:

I'm high on shared music
  5:13am
Matt from Springfield:

Smooooooth track! Liking Jeanne and her band!
You should rec this to Joe McG--it would work on his show, and even better...it has SURFACE NOISE!
  5:14am
Matt from Springfield:

Same with this (Norwegian?) Lill Lindfors!
  5:15am
ausmanx:

cassettes have to be cool because we've used them. there are none left. no one's making them now, and all we can do is use up what's left and then say goodbye to them. though I suppose someone might start making them again since vinyl is actually on the rise again! that was actually one of the promos for RSD in Australia, a record label made up samplers and recorded them on recycled cassettes as giveaways on Saturday...
  5:17am
Sam:

Yes, but the quality of most casettes is so bad.
  5:18am
Sam:

Françoise Hardy is so wonderful and sexy. If I had been around in the 60's I would have been nuts over her.
  5:21am
Matt from Springfield:

Now this WAS on Surface Noise! That's how I learned this song--originally Jackie DeShannon. I prefer Jackie's, though I'm a fan of hers.
  5:22am
Julie:

I think Lill was Swedish maybe? Not sure. Sorry no time to grab Lush from the library. I'm running behind with the playlist now haha
  5:24am
Matt from Springfield:

Although besides being the Queen of the Bonus Track, Julie is great at playing songs recorded by actors: Twiggy, Francoise Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Evan Rachel Wood, JANE BIRKIN! So many others..you need to only search her Archives for more!

Btw if I remember, Twiggy was from '76, though the LP wasn't necessarily from that year.
  5:26am
Matt from Springfield:

My parents are huge fans of Joe--I know this one well!
  5:28am
helsingfred:

Not to worry, Lush is always there for us... somewhere out in lushberspace :)
  5:29am
Julie:

I actually tried to grab Lush for you, but it required climbing a laadder and didn't have time!
  5:30am
Julie:

Francoise wasn't an actor, but Jane was actress/model
  5:31am
ausmanx:

aren't there lots of WFMU minions running around there who could climb the ladder for you?
  5:33am
helsingfred:

Yeah really, where's the Designated Ladder Intern?
  5:35am
Sam:

The interns are supposed to be there at 5:30 sharp! I hope they're not sleeping in.
  5:36am
maestroso in HK:

Good morning Julie
Normally I would be waking up to your show but now I am able to comment as I am on the other side of the world. Love your show!
  5:36am
Julie:

No minions at this time! I didn't feel right asking Marty McSorley!
  5:36am
Julie:

Thanks Maestro! Hello Hong Kong! Ni Hao!
  5:38am
Matt from Springfield:

@maestroso: Hello to you in HK! Glad you're able to comment from across the world like you had envisioned!

I commented here when I was in Thailand! I was in the HK airport on the way over, but only for a short layover.
  5:40am
Julie:

How are the record stores in Hong Kong?
  5:44am
helsingfred:

ears are bleeding :)
  5:44am
Matt from Springfield:

Is this the "One night in Bangkok" people?! I was THINKING of that!
  5:45am
ausmanx:

Robey is a pure artist compared to the Russ Abbot that Marty McS has been playing the last few weeks...
  5:45am
Matt from Springfield:

Still, WFMU playing undifferentiated 80s crap just for the sake of it? Who knew.
  5:46am
maestroso in HK:

There were two huge stores when I lived here 1994 - KPS and HMV, I think... both are buried by new malls and shopping centers. Every time I come here it's different. I shall look for the latest, though!
  5:49am
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, "Dominatrix Julie" is a friend!
And with Andy Breckman and JOE FRANKLIN!
And they never said they WEREN'T still doing pot brownies for this 4/20 show! Oh boy...
  5:50am
maestroso in HK:

When KPS opened in 1994 they had somehow acquired a huge inventory. Including, oddly enough, every Good Rats albums (on CD) ever recorded. I picked up a couple of Vaartina CDs and a Happy the Man record that I had been looking for for years.
  5:50am
helsingfred:

oh noes is tmrw 420 theme day at fmu
  5:51am
hamburger / london:

(I used to live in HK too, KPS! :) )
  5:52am
maestroso in HK:

Yeah, they had a great selection of LDs too! Tsim Sha Tsui store.
  5:54am
Sam:

Andy Breckman and Joe Franklin stoned together would be the height of perfection
  5:55am
hamburger / london:

there was this store down the road from HMV in TST now closed but for a small shop it had a crazy amount of obscure bootlegs.. I think they were all self-made repackaged CD-Rs or something,..
  5:55am
helsingfred:

Sam, there would be a great disturbance in the Force!
  5:55am
Matt from Springfield:

@maestroso: The new HK airport is an easy landing, but if you were there in '94, I'm sure this will be familiar to ya:
http://www.youtube.com/watchv=OtnL4KYVtDE

This is actually how planes had to land at the old Kai Tak airport, the only major one in HK. Since coalhard's not here tonight, I'll post the vids!
  5:56am
Julie:

Thanks for Listening, guys!! XO
  5:56am
maestroso in HK:

Yes, I think I know what store your are tallking about - found some obscure jazz records there.
  5:56am
cz-kluk:

David Bowie loves the fanny?
  5:57am
Matt from Springfield:

@Sam: I hear ya!
@hamburger: When I was in London I liked the record stores in Notting Hill Gate. Especially the rare record depts. in some of them.
  5:58am
maestroso in HK:

@Matt: Yes, I remember that airport well! I think I passed over my friend's flat in Kowloon city. Could look right into the windows
  5:58am
Matt from Springfield:

I like the anime DJ drawing! Could you type out who is the artist? "V. Walker"?
  5:59am
maestroso in HK:

Take care Julie!
  6:04am
Matt from Springfield:

Have a great day Julie!
  6:14am
Julie:

the artist is Veshae Walker
  6:21am
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks!
