  12:13pm
DJ KG:

You are listening to Jersey City!

Good afternoon, all.
  12:14pm
BodegaMan:

semi-present, barely accounted for.
  12:14pm
DJ KG:

julie - if you freeze some peanut butter inside an ice cube, you'll find your miniature minotaur will be occupied for hours playing with it. excellent rainy day diversion!
  12:14pm
minnesota jeff:

minnesota jeff:

This song was used in Koyanisqqatsi wasn't it? Or is it just a similar Glass composition?
  12:28pm
noomi:

Hi Kurt! Thanks for this, I had only previously listened to the album Philip Glass made with Ravi Shankar, seems like there's a lot more for me to discover.
  12:29pm
βrian:

Only similar, to judge by the date.
  12:31pm
Keith:

Hey Kurt!
  12:32pm
minnesota jeff:

Well its on a relase from 2011, but this must be the song from Koyanisqqatsi, just performed by Oasis Quartet.
  12:32pm
DJ KG:

Glass's String Quartet No. 3 is from 1985 (this saxophone arrangement is later), and Koyaanisquatsi is from 1993, so he was probably working with similar ideas. I just checked the Koyaanisquatsi soundtrack and it doesn't list this as a piece. But yeah, it does sound like it.
  12:34pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

I haven't heard much of Philip Glass's music until now. I'm really liking it. Another musical discovery I'm making because of your show, Kurt! Thank you. Now if only I had a New Yorker article on Philip Glass to print out for you -- haha
  12:38pm
DJ KG:

haha! thanks for listening, wendy, and thanks for the john cage article!
  12:38pm
Snortley:

I was a roadie for Koyaanisquatsi. Kurt (the producer or something) wouldn't even let us stand in the back and watch. We had to go get beers while the show ran and the union crew worked backstage.
  12:39pm
DJ KG:

snortley, that's so out of balance!
  12:42pm
pierre:

this is seriously moving
  12:59pm

i understand why this is interesting to ask us what we want to hear, right know i'd say whatever you decide as i listen to fmu to do not have to ask myself what i want to hear.
  1:05pm
Handsome Harry:

I'd like to hear more Bloodbath...of the Swedish Death Metal variety.
  1:06pm
marq:

just started watching the tv series Fishing with John and listening to John Lurie's Strange and Beautiful Music. Said to myself this has to have been played on wfmu. did a search and sure enough been played on Kurt's show.
  1:08pm
BodegaMan:

I'm ready for Kurt to put together Zappa - Varese mash-up based on some comment board chatter from a while back....
  1:08pm
MuttonChops:

Got any Zappa man? :)
  1:09pm
DJ KG:

wanna know a secret? i can't stand zappa.
  1:09pm
Zappa:

ZING!!!!!
  1:10pm
Jack:

Zappa the man, or Zappa's music?
and why?
  1:10pm
DJ KG:

but i guess i was thinking more general sorta response, like "i hate metal" or "don't play quiet stuff, it makes me go to sleep at work" or "why can't you play funny songs like ken and irwin do?"
  1:11pm
MuttonChops:

Maybe some Scofield. Well Zappa says nice things about you. ;P
  1:11pm
BodegaMan:

don't play funny songs like Ken and Irwin do.
  1:11pm
Funny Songs:

TM Ken&Irwin Inc.
  1:11pm
DJ KG:

oh, zappa tha man seemed like a good guy. i've sometimes liked his instrumental music. mostly it's just that i can't stand his smug-ass voice. and i don't really find him that funny.
  1:12pm
Zappa:

Zinged again, boohoo!
  1:12pm
DJ KG:

no disrespect for zappa the man, tho.even if he did try to squelch the velvet underground. totally respect the pmrc stand he took.
  1:13pm
Zappa:

I had to walk many things back, myself :-)
  1:13pm
MuttonChops:

Viva Zappata, Badges who needs stinkin' badges?!?
  1:14pm
humour:

does humor belong in music?
  1:14pm
DJ KG:

humor, humour? only when it's funny.
  1:15pm
MuttonChops:

Is my peanut butter in your chocolate?
  1:15pm
humour:

that was the title of one of Zappa's albums I think
  1:15pm
Metallic Merlin:

Metal, metal, and more metal.
  1:16pm
MuttonChops:

or are you a chocolate in my peanut butter kind of guy?
  1:16pm
Jack:

Zappa's not that funny, unless you like poo poo humor. And he's not a singer. But some of his music - and the musicians who played in his bands - is/are great.
Listen to "Ocean is the Ultimate Solution" from "Sleep Dirt" (1979)
  1:17pm
Bad Ronald:

I'd like to hear the Dickies, sir.
  1:17pm
Jack:

But if you want humor in the music, play anything by Beefheart.
  1:17pm
MuttonChops:

I vote for the Dickies. Is this a democracy or what?
  1:18pm
MuttonChops:

Play anything by Bono - now that is funny!
  1:19pm
MuttonChops:

Otomo Rocks!
  1:20pm
DJ KG:

i never said this was a democracy
  1:20pm
MuttonChops:

Nice, dictate me baby! :)
  1:21pm
ben drinken:

remember when Kenny G, Irwin, and Ken were on back to back on Wednesdays? Made the whole day weird. Nice to have a break in between Ken and Irwin though, I think.
  1:21pm
DJ KG:

mutton, you take dictation?
  1:21pm
MuttonChops:

My specialty!
  1:22pm
DJ KG:

ben, i loved the ken kenny irwin all day block! it's a crazy honor to be sitting here now!
  1:23pm
minnesota jeff:

Please, no Zappa. I dunno, I like to be surprised, I like variety. I prefer 3/4 song sets based on a theme rather than full 3 hours on one theme. But I also like when DJs talk about what they play to some length.
  1:25pm
hamburger:

@minnesota jeff: do you have some kind of OCD? :)
  1:27pm
minnesota jeff:

I don't believe so, no.
  1:29pm
MuttonChops:

On no not the Zappa! Spare me the Zappa. Anything but the Zappa! Ahhhhh!
  1:34pm
coelacanth:

I agree with everyone thus far.
  1:37pm
DJ KG:

  1:40pm
northguineahills:

I have always dug tetuzi!
  1:44pm
minnesota jeff:

Americas Beatles, but you know, not really.
  1:47pm
coelacanth:

...ac tually...i agree MOSTLY with Jack. i can think of bright instrumental moments on Imaginary Diseases,Uncle Meat, even Absolutely Freeeeee...but usually i find Zappa's music to be lost between boring and totally juvenile....nothing against HIM though.
  1:48pm
coelacanth:

(how's that for agreeable!)
  1:49pm
MuttonChops:

Jan Brady whines: "Zappa, Zappa, Zappa."
  1:51pm
coelacanth:

What was Marsha listening to?
  1:52pm
MuttonChops:

Janis Ian or The Carpenters or MC5?
  1:53pm
Jack:

Kurt, you are so funny. After playing all these Japanese artists, and the talk of Zappa, and then you play The BYRDS!
Too funny!
  1:54pm
minnesota jeff:

I love Lindsey Buckinghams weird solo albums!
  1:55pm
MuttonChops:

Man feels like I just took Ritilin
  1:57pm
jim black:

  1:58pm
DJ KG:

  1:59pm

  2:00pm
MuttonChops:

  2:00pm
Kurt Vincent:

  2:11pm
Neil and Rick:

Minah Birds!
  2:13pm
Yankovic:

Whatever happened to Polkacide?
  2:13pm
Jack:

Jimmy Sturr! He lives up here in Florida, NY. He's our local big time celebrity. ( he's also Irish )
  2:15pm
minnesota jeff:

Florida, NY sounds made up.
  2:16pm
DJ KG:

so does "up here in florida"
  2:18pm
Ike:

It's as real as California, MD, and Texas, WI.
  2:18pm
minnesota jeff:

Basically, it seems "Jack" is lying about his local celebrity Jimmy Sturr. Keep the Lies out of WFMU.
  2:19pm
DJ KG:

i don't believe in those places either, ike.
  2:19pm
DJ KG:

i just believe in me. yoko and me.
  2:24pm
TDK60:

Gracias for 'Rhymney'. Those fellows had something.
  2:31pm
Robert:

Catching up on comments...the only appropriate setting for Philip Glass's music was that commercial for Anacin or Excedrin or whatever; his music is a canned headache. Ever hear "Coy Hotsy-Totsy" by P.D.Q. Bach? Nailed it.
  2:33pm
Danilo:

Oh my, it's a slavic Cecil Taylor!
  2:40pm
BodegaMan:

I'm glad listener request hour is over.
  2:41pm
ben drinken:

I like the phrase canned headache, Robert. But then I soon after thought of Canned Heat. Remember them?
  2:41pm
DJ KG:

yeah, that listener feedback thing didn't really go like i expected.

but it's not like i was gonna pay attention anyway...
  2:42pm
?:

John Cage -- the music world's Great Uniter.
  2:46pm
Handsome Harry:

Ahhhhh. Here we go.
  2:51pm
Danilo:

  2:52pm
hamburger:
