Listener comments!

  7:07pm
marq:

Hi Mr. Fine Wine. Is it true that you play the original 45s on the air and never an mp3 or a digital copy/cd of what you find?
  7:07pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

"Justs You and I" is my new fave!
  7:08pm
Fine Wine:

99.99 percent of the time, yes, marq.
  7:09pm
Canyon Cowboy:

Marq,

Unless he leaves the original 45s on the subway.
  7:10pm
45s:

We're 15 times better than mp3s.
  7:12pm
DL:

Speaking of mp3s, do you transfer these 45s to mp3 for your own personal backup copies?
  7:13pm
marq:

wonderful. as a feat of dj skills that has got to be a challenge to fill a one hour radio show. but you usually don't talk much during the show so that must make it easier. sometimes I wish I heard you talk more. but you must feel the need to cram the good music into the hour.
  7:14pm
Fine Wine:

I feel the need to cram the good music into the hour. DL: Only things like acetates and test pressings and fragile/damaged ones...
  7:15pm
Union Planters Bank:

It is about 30 + - 45s for a one hour program.
  7:17pm
DL:

Gotcha. Thanks.
  7:20pm
Fine Wine:

UPB: Actually it averages out to around 24.
  7:20pm
Sonny Rickles:

good show! would love to hear some of these background instrumentals all the way through for a change.
  7:21pm
marq:

I really love the music Mr. Fine Wine plays and so good at his selections. But of all of the wfmu dj's i know the least about because he is the only one I think that doesn't talk...even about himself or what he did this week or anything. kind of cool in a way. but still leaves me wondering.
  7:22pm
WFMUMING!:

Never leave originals anywhere! Ever!

Wrap them in cotton wool care for them :)
  7:22pm
Fine Wine:

You really don't want to know what I did this week, Marq.
  7:23pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

Marq, can't you hear the superior bass response only 45s reproduce?
  7:26pm
marq:

listener jumpy: of course. original 45s you can only hear the real sound. vinyl is the only way I have found that really lets you hear the sound the way it was meant to be when produced. so good.
  7:27pm
Elwyn:

I always enjoy your show but usually listen via podcast.
  7:27pm
Bossy Boots:

Mr. Finewine is the music, and the music is Mr. Finewine, think of it that way. If you know one, you'll know the other. Lively discussion 'bout this! Do I sense a Mardi Gras feel going on tonight?? Loving it! Thanks Mr. Finewine!
  7:28pm
marq:

i can hear Mr. Fine Wine talk through the music he plays. yes.
  7:28pm
Fine Wine:

The show is about the music, not about me, Marq. Believe me, Huey Piano Smith and the Clowns have a lot more interesting information to impart in 2 minutes 15 seconds than I do in whatever amount of inconsequential blather you might think you want to hear me spout.
  7:28pm
Bossy Boots:

Now I'm very HAPPY! Tab! LOVE LOVE LOVE. >swoon<
  7:29pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

@ Marq: plus, you can pump the volume on 45s without too much distrotions.
  7:29pm
33 1/3:

Sonny Rickles,
You can get all the instros on a dj premium CD during the WFMU marathon.
  7:31pm
WFMUMING!:

Are mp3's poor cousin :()? ..but where would we be without mp3, revolutionasry accessibility, good music anytime anywhere aint so bad!
  7:37pm
WFMUMING!:

certain vinyl is great frisbee! but watch out, I decapitated a garden gnome once :(
  7:37pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

I'm sure he had it coming...
  7:38pm
MP321BOOM!:

MP3, is a patented digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression.
Lossy data compression compresses data by discarding some of it. Chops the top and bottom off and steamrolls the center.
Where would we be WFMUMING! ?

In a record store, at a record fair, slipping quarters into a juke at the bar, sipping suds to 45 speed blues.
  7:40pm
marq:

you may be right Mr, Fine Wine. but I doubt you are not as interesting yourself. thanks for being a great wfmu dj and icon for so long.
  7:43pm
WFMUMING!:

MP321BOOM!! Of course you are right.. There is no known substitute for live music !
  7:44pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

There's only so much music on MP3. But anyone who's dug through crates knows there a kajillion 45s out there.
  7:45pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

Yes there is. They call it "karoke."
  7:45pm
TJ:

The patent status on mp3 is ambiguous. The lame project has done a good job at leveraging the legal technicalities to make the format effectively open source, while commercializing and distributing requires licensing in the countries that pay attention to that sort of thing.
  7:47pm
MP321BOOM!:

TJ,
That is true.

Open source makes open sores.
  7:48pm
TJ:

But yeah, the format is far from perfect, but being a highly compressed and progressive format has made it the primary transmission format for audio over the internet.
  7:48pm
Montana Slim:

Speaking of mp3s, the stream tonight seems to have alot of volume fluctuations and distortion.
  7:49pm
MP321BOOM!:

Montana Slim,
Blame rapid intern turnover.
  7:50pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

Really? For once this thing is loud and clear for me.
  7:50pm
Fine Wine:

Blame me and my records.
  7:52pm
WFMUMING!:

despite the obvious inequalities, Mp3's are a wonderful source for all kind s of music access. Unless you are a Bat, like myself, It is a reasonable substitute for the true sound of vinyl which, unfortunately, is often unavailable for all kinds of reasons.
  7:54pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

Which reminds me, if DJs had to rely on MP3s, we'd all have the same few sngs. While some of who DJ have some 45s in common, none of us have the exact same ones.
  7:56pm
fleep:

And a laptop emitting surface noise is so wonderfully lo-fi.
  7:57pm
TJ:

LP crackles are way more awesome than bleeps and blips.
  7:58pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

I cannot understand laptop DJing. One nut spills a drink on your set up and it's all over.
  7:58pm
WFMUMING!:

music is infinite. Records of which ever format, are limited. There are always lot's of songs.. I enjoy hearing as much as WFMUing possible!
  7:58pm
marq:

thanks Mr. Fine Wine. another great show.
  7:58pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

Love that "Summer in the City"!
  7:59pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

Yes, great show!
  10:20pm
Uncle Ash:

new ... deliverance!
  5:37am
Squeaky:

Mr. Fine Wine's show is amazing, and his raps between sets - the ratio of words to music, the stuff he says and the way he says it - are pretty much perfect. Listener Marq in time will understand this.
  10:00am
Clinto:

Re: Sweet Baby, do you know "Ooh it hurts me" by the Cavaliers? exact same arrangement, but different words and sounds a lot fatter.
  10:03am
Clinto:

I listen to Finewine's show on vynil!
  11:55pm
charliedontsurf:

Tab Thomas, Mary Jane-- WOW!-- That knocked me OUT!!
