Two books: The Weeping Goldsmith, by John Kress, which is about botany and Myanmar, and Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader: North Korea and the Kim Dynasty, by Bradley K. Martin, the title of which is self-explanatory.

oh also Flatland... its written from the perspective of someone in a 2 dimensional reality, and culminates with a sphere passing through. written by a teacher in i believe the late 1800's. weirdly cute and heartwarming for a math/science nerd.

yes, up to 1907 - Vol. 1. Read the book. I'm amazed someone hasn't made this into a movie; the development of film, magic lanterns, projectors, formats, content, audiences. A thick tome with lots of pictures. Surprisingly good book.

lately I've been reading a bunch of rock autobiographies ( there are a LOT of them ) some are not so good, but I liked Andy Summers' and Joe Jacksons' ( from which I learned of grilled cheese and onion sandwiches mmmm...) Sorry, can't remember the titles.

the roxy music bio (not autobio) "remake remodel" is fantastic. i was thinking of it earlier when jack mentioned the pre-history (sorta) of cinema book. it follows roxy from when they were adolescents and didn't know each other up to the first record and then stops. ballsy move, and a great book. in a way, you know all you need to by that point.

The Joe Jackson book does the same thing; his upbringing and career until the release of his first album. The Andy Summers book is about his life until the Police play Shea Stadium. Likewise Ray Davies' book. Oh, and the Ron Wood book sucked, but Clapton's autobio I liked and thought was good.
