  7:34pm
CB2:

Mama always said, "Damn it to Hell and back again!"

I thought she said "Heck the Bells" which was my first cuss phrase.
  7:35pm
listener james from westwood:

parental/grandparental invective: my mother's mom would invite people to say (1) "Go piss up a rope!" or (2) "Go shit in your hat and punch it!"
  7:36pm
texas scott:

Uncle Earl never swore. You knew he was REALLY mad when he would say "HELLS BELLS,GENEVA!"
  7:37pm
CB2:

TS, was that Geneva, Alabama?
  7:37pm
sugarwolf:

My mother never yells or swears. We're WASPs!
  7:38pm
Tir Chonaill Abu:

Uncle Earl sounds like a very patient stoic man.
  7:38pm
G:

My mom's dad had mom's mom (who died last month at 103) on a $25/week budget (ok, it was the 1940s), and he would then badger her at the dinner table about what she bought. "Where the hell did you get this meat?"
  7:38pm
texas scott:

Tyler,Texas circa 1973,CB2
  7:39pm
Don (trip dub):

You're bumpin it tonite girl. "sumbitchbastard" was picked up at a friends Bar Mitzvah in Washington Heights. Keepin' both genders equal
  7:41pm
Jeff M:

My mama was mostly prone to saying "Fudge!" or "Fiddlesticks!"

Really.

If she was completely overcome, red-faced-angry-frustrated overcome, the s-word might escape her lips.

But the words which really put the fear in me were, "Cut me a switch."

Did I mention she was from the South?
  7:42pm
Tir Chonaill Abu:

Whenever my dad was stumped by something he was prone to uttering the phrase- "Well fuck me pink"
  7:43pm
CB2:

Jeff M and did you have to go out and cut that switch and if you cut too small/short you were really sorry for that mistake?
Did I mention we are from the South?
  7:48pm
patrick:

Monica, where is this J-Jems tracj from! i love it!
  7:51pm
Jeff M:

Oh, sure. It had to be the right length, thinnish and whippy. From the willow tree, I think. Unsuitable switches Were Not Accepted.

That special kind of mindfuck - forcing you to go get your own instrument of torture - seems like it was completely mainstream in certain times and places. To someone born in the 1920s in the Southeast US, or someone in charge of an English school in the 19th or earlier 20th century (from what I've read), that was just the way it was.

I think we've made some progress since then, at least in that area. Possibly overshot a little, even.
  7:54pm
CB2:

Mo,

Wicca evenin' of solstice celebration!
  7:54pm
ListenerMarty:

Awesome set .... deepdeepdeep ... TY!
  7:57pm

Tir Chonaill Abu, that sounds DADT....Hi Patrick, it's from a comp called Muzikal Youth, ez to find online....Thanks so much, Listener Marty!!
  7:57pm
bennett4senate:

hey, we're cooking and sewing over here... everything is going smoothly so far, but if the going gets rough I'll bust out "you shit-heel!" which is my father's go-to for uncooperative inanimate objects
  7:59pm
Pahz:

Back in my day, we didn't even have switches. We had to go out back and carve our own switch from a LOG! And we liked it! Yes we did! My brother would stand by and fend off the dinosaurs while I did the switch-carvin', being that I was the more artistic of the two of us. Then we had to take that switch back inside for our father to approve. Took us all day. And it was uphill... in the snow... and don't forget the dinosaurs.

We were well-behaved children.
  8:01pm
monica:

B4S, my fave new ginger on WFMu staff!....Pahz, holy hell! I thought my mother and her prediliction for hairbrushes was bad!
  8:02pm
G:

my family's always been a bunch of critics. hence my sweet dispositin.
  8:03pm
Jeff M:

Here y'all go. Great fluffy eggnog. Definitely thoroughly liquored-up (such that cocktail drinkers who enjoy, say, Manhattans and Martinis take it in stride, but lightweight tipplers of fruity drinks might be taken aback). Monica, what I served at that party had the liquors proportionally reduced to about 3/4 of what's called for here, just so as not to reduce the drink's comfortable audience.

Not for those who fear raw eggs.

Traditional eggnog, properly made out o' scratch:

- 6 eggs, separated, at room temperature

- About 1/3 cup sugar, or to taste

- 1 c. brandy

- 1 c. rye whiskey

- 1/2 c. dry sherry

- 1/2 c. white rum

- 2 c. milk

- 2 c. heavy cream

- Freshly grated nutmeg

Beat the egg yolks until very light and doubled in volume. Slowly add the sugar, and continue to beat very hard while carefully adding the liquors. Stir in the milk and the cream. Beat the egg whites until stiff and fold in.

Set aside or refrigerate several hours before serving. Garnish the cups with fresh nutmeg. 20 servings.
  8:04pm
cb1:

bennett4senate - "Shit-heels" was my nickname growing up with two older brothers.
  8:04pm
texas scott:

dang Pahz.
you need some eggnog.
  8:05pm
Pahz:

I do, TS, I do.

It might mix with my Vicodin. I'm not drivin', someone pass me the nog.
  8:06pm
Anonymous:

And here I though a "great house-cleaner" was a big ol' pile of coke.
  8:09pm
trs:

Applause for the upcoming solstice change in direction. And the before bed vitamin D that offsets the lack o' light!
  8:10pm
trs:

and the Jeff M recipe. Good one.
  8:15pm
Jeff M:

As far as I've been able to trace that eggnog recipe back (because I like to attribute, when possible) is a North Carolina chef named Bill Neal.
  8:15pm
Fiona DeWitt:

Go Girl!

Happy Holi-daze!
  8:16pm
texas scott:

  8:21pm
aido:

we had a weeping willow tree in our back yard. ma used to say "if you bring back a dry, weak one, i'll whup you with that and send you back for a good one. one trip did it and she'd hold one arm and whip you around on a circle. i grew up to be a respectible citizen.
  8:24pm
Tir Chonaill Abu:

Did Aunt Geneva take her false teeh out before dolling out those kisses texas scott?

Anyways goodnight I have to catch a few hours kip as I am on the road for work in a few hours and the snow has fallen quite heavily here. Hate to drag myself away as there is a great vibe going on. Well defo catch up with the rest of the show tomorrow if only to get a few more drink recipes, thanks again Jeff M
  8:25pm
Pahz:

You will indeed love texas scott's radio show. Its all kinds of awesome. And I'm not just saying that because of the eggnog.

My Aunt Geneva always took out her false teeth.
  8:25pm
CB2:

Universal the "switch stories" as are Mo's selections.

Tir Chonaill Abu - did you have to ask that?
  8:26pm
texas scott:

she had all her teeth,Tir Chonaill Abu
she would sometimes trick us an give us wet willies in the ear
we all were grossed out
  8:26pm
CB2:

CB1 - Aunt Edith?

It's the holidays.
  8:28pm
cb1:

Yes, Aunt Edith liked to pop her teeth out at the Xmas table while eating turkey. The odd part is, we thought it was hysterical.
  8:30pm
Pahz:

True story- my grandpa used to pop his false teeth out and turn them upside down when we weren't looking. Then he'd smile at us as if everything was normal.

He was awesome.
  8:30pm
cb1:

Speaking of Aunt Edith - I think I told about her "box camera" last xmas on this show. Suffice to say it had a "flash"
  8:30pm
texas scott:

thanks,Pahz.
Monica's show inspired me to do a show of my own.

Which had a SOUNDTRACK ALBUM?

Just sayin'
  8:37pm
CB2:

Well, down in Fl a certain bulldog was known for eating my grandpa's wooden leg - actually he only ate the foot, but my grandpa's was proud and so replaced with fiberglass after that.

The pup name? Tippy.
  8:39pm
cb1:

CB2 - was he wearing it at the time?
  8:42pm
Pahz:

cb1, how could the dog be wearing his grandpa's wooden leg? That's ridiculous.
  8:42pm
CB2:

CB1 don't go there!

You know he liked his bourbon with a King Leo Peppermint Stick as a stirrer every night.
  8:42pm
aido:

monica:

Thank you all for tuning in tonight! See you next week. By all means over do it this week!!!
  8:59pm
Jeff M:

'Tis the Season for "Baby, It's Cold Outside". Hearing a whole bunch of different versions recently, I've been noticing it's remarkable how vastly people's interpretations can differ in tone - from a an urbane dance between equals to something really leering and kind of date-rapey.
  9:01pm
dave:

it sounded like fred flintstone was one of the singers in that a capella choir, actually.

and i just can't fget over the date-rapey undertones in "baby it's cold outside", though that pearl bailey version helped.
  9:01pm
cb1:

That's a joyful noise!
  9:01pm
Jeff M:

The Pearl Bailey/Hot Lips Page version is remarkable for how thoroughly she's the one in charge...
  9:03pm
dave:

indeed.
  1:05pm
seang:

Hey Monica, did you see that Paolo Conte has a new album out? love that dude! and your show!
