[10:00 AM] Paul Boutin: "The Age of Music Piracy Is Officially Over"

Will 2010 go down as the year people quit downloading music illegally? Guest Paul Boutin writes about social networks and digital media for the New York Times, reviews books for the Wall Street Journal, and his latest Wired Magazine essay declared that "The age of stealing music via the Internet is officially over". Boutin describes how technological innovations have made the prospect of paying for digital music way more appealing than it was in Napster's heyday. But even as the hand of law came down this year against popular filesharing websites like Limewire and the Pirate Bay, Pirate Party leader Rick Falkvinge made quite the opposite declaration: "File sharing is increasing every day and the only thing this means is that more and more people will try to hide what they are doing on the internet." We'll discuss where things stand with music piracy as 2010 comes to a close.

I was always partial to NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES (aka Hell of the Living Dead) - not just because it lifts the Dawn soundtrack by Goblin, but it's the first & only instance (that i can think of) of a film dealing with the issue of animal zombies (if it's radiation killing people & re-animating 'em, why not that rat you're picking up?

Yes, but there is some nuance to that.
People used to tape or copy to "try before they buy" without outlaying a lot of money.

There used to be the argument in the 80s that "home taping is killing music", when the truth was somewhat different - home tapers bought more music than non home tapers.

i used napster back a decade ago, but i recently did some torrenting and it is insane how fast it is with modern bandwidth, some 1G box set in like 10 minutes...i can't imagine that the ability to download things (apps, movies, sons) is going anywhere at this bit rate.

I think your interviewee had good points, but it's pretty oversimplified. I support artists, and record companies if they are square with their artists. But what it boils down to is that a self-released album selling 50,000 still makes more money for the artist than a platinum-selling I know artists are naive about how fast and when the money will come in, but the record business has been cynically exploiting that for years. I know for a fact that if they pulled this crap in the movie or book business, people would be up in arms ( and there are plenty of greedy manager/agent stories out there). But music, everyone seems to think that musicians should be happy with scraps.

good question glenn, people ask the same thing about downloads since there is no production cost there really. and as paul pointed out in the interview, the artist doesn't typically see a very large percentage of the royalties from digital music sales (unless they are independent...even so much of that dollar goes to Apple/Amazong etc). But artists might receive more if that Eminem case Paul was telling about comes thru

Soundcloud is like that for dance and other artists. You can stream or pay.

freemusicarchive.org is 100% free music that artists want to share, but there are also usually easy ways to tip the artist and/or purchase their music/mersh
