Listener comments!

  9:09pm
Alex:

Good evening Mr. Blumin,
It just may interest you to hear that I bought my first record today. Because of WFMU I decided that it really would be worth my while to get into listening to vinyl, so at a yard sale today, I picked up a copy of the Easy Rider soundtrack.
  9:15pm
D. Blumin:

And so it begins, Alex! Bless ya!
  9:22pm
Charly:

Wow Alex, I still sometimes forget there are people around young enough to have never had a vinyl collection.
A very good choice, hope you enjoy it.
Charly (still living in the 80s).
  9:24pm
Charly:

Nice expansive sounds Daniel!
  9:25pm
D. Blumin:

Charly, what was your first record bought?
  9:27pm
Charly:

My first album was "Zinc alloy and the hidden riders of tomorrow" by T-Rex back in 1974
Still love that sound.
  9:28pm
QSP:

Alex, don't forget - you can play the top of a vinyl record and then flip it OVER and play the bottom side too.
  9:28pm
Charly:

Do you remember yours DB?
  9:29pm
Charly:

Lol- classic comment QSP. ;-)
  9:30pm
QSP:

And make sure you play it at every possible speed!
  9:31pm
D. Blumin:

Mine was a cassette, Sir. I believe it was Heartbeat City by the Cars! But I think it was part of the cassette club where you bought 6 cassettes fer a penny!
  9:32pm
D. Blumin:

Which means there musta been 5 other firsts!
  9:32pm
Charly:

Let's face it Daniel. You're a cassette kinda guy aren't you?
  9:33pm
Alex:

Well if we're counting cassettes, my first was Chipmunks Rock the House, yes I was 4 years old actually.
  9:35pm
texas scott:

my 1st vinyl was Boston's "Don't Look Back"?
and I don't.
  9:36pm
Charly:

@ Alex and QSP. When I was a kid we had all these talking records that worked at 16 rpm. Unfortunately I no longer have them, but I do have a healthy collection of my dads 78s.
  9:37pm
Looms:

First 7" was Culture Club's Do You Really Want To Hurt Me, first LP Nena's 1st. What a loser!
  9:37pm
D. Blumin:

Yes! I am Charly - and you know what, the cassettes still sound ok!
  9:38pm
D. Blumin:

Loser, Looms? That sounds great! Whachootalkinabout?
  9:38pm
Charly:

Good. I have a large collection also
  9:39pm
Looms:

Culture Club is okay, but Nena...
  9:39pm
Charly:

Looms. That stuff will be in fashion again in a year or two - but only on the underground!
  9:40pm
Looms:

I think the Nena was the first LP i sold too.
  9:41pm
Charly:

Wha? that was a very clever cold war critique.
  9:42pm
D. Blumin:

Neun und Neunzig Luftballons, Looms...
  9:44pm
Charly:

You'd have thought bulk baloons came in round hundreds?
  9:44pm
Looms:

Well, maybe i'm a bit nasty on this but who cares?
The oldest LP i have in my collection (i mean, i bought at the time) is The Sound's From The Lion's Mouth. I still enjoy this band, they had such a peculiar alchemy.
  9:46pm
D. Blumin:

Hey Texas! I think I had .38 Special in that 6 tapes fer a penny!
  9:47pm
D. Blumin:

QSP's first rekkid?
  9:48pm
Charly:

Don't make us guess
  9:49pm
QSP:

Guessing would be fun, but if I remember correctly, it was a 7" of Queen's Killer Queen.
  9:50pm
Charly:

That was a good record
  9:50pm
QSP:

...with headphones!
  9:52pm
Charly:

Yippeee T- rex
  9:52pm
Charly:

Thanks Daniel!
  9:53pm
Looms:

Sounds better than Nena
  9:54pm
Charly:

Lol.....
  9:56pm
Charly:

Looms. Yours is on next.
  9:57pm
Looms:

DON'T DO THAT DANIEL!!!!!! It would be a rock'n'roll suicide!
  9:59pm
D. Blumin:

Keep your hat on, Looms! We'll have to see...
  10:00pm
Charly:

DB. Someone may never darken your door again. Careful now.

Hiya Mantratrain - whereabouts in Ireland?
  10:30pm
Rick:

My first record I bought was a 7" single as a kid in U.K., "One More Night", by Yellow Dog in the mid 70's. Then Donna Summer "I feel Love".

  10:41pm
Looms:

Just wondering, what's FMU's first record ever?
  10:42pm
D. Blumin:

Good question - I'll have to get it to the proper authorities!
  10:57pm
Charly:

Scott- I'm a big Atlas fan.
Good call
:-)
  11:07pm
Looms:

  11:12pm
D. Blumin:

Bye Bye, Looms! Thanks fer listening!!! See ya in 2 weeks!
  11:17pm
QSP:

:)
  11:18pm
Charly:

I remember watching The Monkees tv show Late sixties or early seventies every saturday afternoon. Hope it was a good purchase for you CSS
  11:18pm
heathroi:

I wish i could say my first was something really cool but i dont suppose jannet jackson's control really counts. On cassette too.
  11:19pm
Charly:

Cassettes get an extra point round here :-)
  11:21pm
Charly:

I'd be interested to hear if anyones first purchase was an 8 track cartridge.?
They never really took off this side of the pond.
  11:24pm
Noel in DC:

1st record I owned (my mom bought it for me): Star Wars. I think it had the song from the movie and a disco version of the song as well
1st record I bought: The Clash by the Clash. Still remember hearing the opening chords of "Clash City Rockers."
With regard to the Monkees, I, too, used to watch that show everyday. Their movie "Head" was quite swellegant as well.
As for 8-track: I knew a guy who had the Sex Pistols "Never Mind the Bollocks" on 8-track. Or at least he claimed to have had it.
  11:25pm
heathroi:

Or on the far side of the western pond. All i remember is cassette players
  11:26pm
D. Blumin:

Janet's Control definitely counts!
  11:27pm
Charly:

Sex pistols on 8 track cartridge?
Now that really has blown my mind ;-p
  11:28pm
D. Blumin:

Hiya Noel! Played something off Head recently; otherwise it'd be comin up! And Clash City Rockers? Damn! Beats my purchase of Animalize!
  11:28pm
QSP:

Does FMU have a working 8-track player?
  11:29pm
Charly:

They have a working wax cylinder player!
  11:31pm
Charly:

I'm kinda hoping that statement turns out to be true.
  11:32pm
QSP:

I'd like to hear that distinctive 8-track ka-chunk from between tracks, or even within a track...
  11:34pm
D. Blumin:

To my great regret, we do not as far as I can see, QSP! Antique Phonograph must! A wax cylinder I mean... No way would there be 8-track played on AP!
Too bad we got rid of the old cart machines!
  11:34pm
Charly:

I kinda like that gut wrenching crackle as my cassette drive shreds another prized cassette
  11:35pm
Noel in DC:

Hi Daniel. Loving your show as always.
I remember the only reason I got that Clash record was the cover. My mom was in a record store getting something (I forget what), and I saw the Clash LP in the front of a bin. I dug the cover, bought it, and thank god I did.
As for the Sex Pistols 8-track. The guy who had it owned a record store I went to. Apparently, he and a friend were driving through Arizona, and he popped in the Pistols 8-track. His friend hated it so much that he jerked it out of the player and threw it out the window. My friend grabbed the guy's Bruce Springsteen 8-track and threw it out the window.
  11:36pm
Charly:

Ha ha Bye bye Bruce!
  11:36pm
D. Blumin:

Then they made up and made love on the open road! Please tell me so!
  11:37pm
heathroi:

The sex pistols on a wax cylinder?
  11:38pm
Noel in DC:

Well, they were both guys. And straight. The way my friend told the story, it sounded like a pretty tense drive.
Wish I could say it had a happy ending...
  11:39pm
Noel in DC:

I wonder how much that Pistols 8-track would get on Ebay?
  11:39pm
Charly:

heathroi
The wax cylinder would melt!
  11:40pm
Charly:

Noel- What, after it was run over?
  11:42pm
Noel in DC:

Well, no. I get that particular 8-track fried in the Arizona desert years ago. I was wondering how much a functioning Sex Pistols 8-track would get these days.
  11:42pm
dan in Falls Church VA:

...really good shoe...
  11:43pm
Noel in DC:

Sorry, meant to say that "I GUESS that particular 8-track fried in the AZ desert years ago."
  11:44pm
Charly:

I got you :-)
  11:45pm
QSP:

http://www.8trackheaven.com/sex.html
  11:46pm
Ike:

Hey folks! I just got home. Sounds good, Daniel. My first record was Weird Al Yankovic: "Even Worse." I was 12 -- that's my excuse. I was ultimately more of a cassette kind of guy though. Still have a lot of them. Not sure what my first cassette was.
  11:47pm
heathroi:

Going right back to the start of the comments easy rider was the only vinyl ive ever owned found it in an abandoned farmhouse on a neighbours farm
  11:49pm
Charly:

@ heathroi
You didn't put it into a yard sale did you? ;-)
  11:50pm
Noel in DC:

QSP: nice find! I seem to remember that 8-track were to the 70s was the CD was to the 1980s: sort of hi-fidelity and fancy.
  11:54pm
heathroi:

Was an 8 track much better than a cassette?
  11:54pm
Charly:

They were doomed over here
  11:54pm
Rick:

premiere necessite is very strange and wonderful. Thanks Daniel, great show!
  11:57pm
Noel in DC:

Heathroi: I could be wrong, but I think the 8-track was considered to be better than a cassette. Also, seem to remember that reel-to-reel tapes were the prized format of choice for stereo afficiandos.
  11:57pm
George of Troy:

Amazing show, Daniel! This last set has been especially good.
  11:58pm
Charly:

Thanks from me too Daniel
til 2 weeks.
  12:00am
Alex:

Another evening well spent, thanks.
  12:37am
D. Blumin:

Many thanks to all! Got 8-tracked away...
See yous in October, everyone!
