Treeve, Wilfrido Vargas was the biggest star out of the Dominican Republic from the mid-'70s to the mid-'80s. There was a time, in Washington Heights in upper Manhattan (a big Dominican neighborhood), where you'd hear Vargas blasting on radios out of every—I mean every—window.

incredible interview re: bill evans. a must read. a friend told me about seeing him at the vanguard with the bloated fingers. also, strangely, i believe another friend's father represented him as his attorney! very sad, what incredible music came from that tortured soul. btw -- somewhere on the internet are a series of videos he made with an amateur pianist in the south in the early 60's. incredible.

Swampsucker Don: I am a HUGE baseball fan. It is poetry to me. My favorite teams have always been the Orioles and the Mets, so I know suffering. This is a whole other scale though (Pittsburgh Pirate baseball). Kind of epic and beautiful.
