January 1, 2010: Afrobeat for the New Year
On Wednesday, we saw "Fela” on Broadway. A classy tribute to the great Nigerian afrobeat master and political activist. Antibalas did the music and it was hot; Batia (my 13 year old daughter) was embarrassed when I whooped during a killer sax solo.
As well-known as Fela is, Mulatu Astatke is not. According to liner notes on Ethiopiques #24, his tracks "foreshadow his 1966 New York recordings...decidedly Latin and hardly a monument to Abyssian groove-- although a few tracks do sound vaguely Ethiopian and the group was named the Ethiopian Quartet. They none the less constitute the very first pages in the annals of afrobeat-- a full six years befroe the Cameroonian Manu Dibango's 'Soul Makossa' and long still before the flamboyant entrance of the Nigerian Fela Anikulapo Kuti."
