At some later date, I urge you all to go have a listen to a "in his own words" radio documentary on Yusef over on the Website of Boston's WGBH. The only voice you hear is Yusef's, talking about his life and music. An absolute MUST listen! Go here: http://tinyurl.com/yfobgwd

BTW, Lateef is in one of those sets - from October 1961.

My guess is that in Pre-Bird, Mingus is referring to a tradition in jazz preceding Charlie Parker. Mingus always paid the highest debt to the influence of Duke Ellington, so I am guessing that he is paying hommage to jazz's earlier history. Of course you know this, but I would do anything to have a listen to that 1961 session w/Yusef at Birdland.

YUSEF LATEEF ROSCOE MITCHELL DOUGLAS EWART ADAM RUDOLPH Walker Art Center McGuire Theater Minneapolis, MN 12/6/08 I suppose it's the one mentioned here: http://www.citypages.com/2008-12-03/music/yusef-lateef-the-gentle-giant/ I haven't listened to it yet, but I'll push it to the top of the pile ... Doug, your explanation sounds very reasonable ...

I surely did/does sound like the Comedian H's. I'll have to poke around and see if they did In a Little Spanish Town. Thanks for the notion.

I can't believe you only met him once!!!

But you have to meet him again, Doug! I'd love to hear the two of you riffing off each other.

It is sort of ridiculous that I haven't endeavored to have more contact with Yusef. From everything I've heard, he is a kind and welcoming soul. The depths of my idolatry have hampered my ability to make mortal contact. Sigh. There is progress though. At 2am this morning when I finished working on today's show, I sent Dr. Lateef an email. Maybe it will lead somewhere...
