August 14, 2009: Willy Les Frank Uke Ike
It's a drag, since I am only on the air once in a while, that I have to do so many tributes to the recently deceased all at once. I played them while they were alive-- well, maybe not Cliff Edwards-- but had to do something for Willy Deville, Les Paul and Frank McCourt. Ukelele Ike/Cliff Edwards is another story: an icon from vaudeville and beyond, who still sounds good today. Hope you like it. Email me with comments: stevek@wfmu.org

Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros	Sandpaper Blues	Former Clash frontman from "Rock Art and the X-Ray Style" (Hellcat Records, 1999)
Mink DeVille	Teardrops Must Fall "Teardrops Must Fall" by "Mink DeVille"	Willy Deville died last week at the age of 58. Sad story but he left behind lotsa great music! Fall teardrops.
Mink DeVille	Cadillac Walk "Cadillac Walk" by "Mink DeVille"	Punk. Soul. Lower East Side Blues. Call it what you want. It's good.
Willy Deville	Voodoo Charm "Voodoo Charm" by "Willy Deville"	Willy left NYC in the 90s and went to New Orleans, where he seemed to pull it all together and . put out a few good albums. My fave is "Victory Mixture" (with Eddie Bo & Dr. John); this one is from "Backstreets of Desire" (FNAC Music, 1992)
Allen Toussaint	On Your Way Down "On Your Way Down" by "Allen Toussaint"	With the best New Orleans players, this 1972 session is rich with soul. On CD as "Life, Love & Faith" (Water Music, 2008)
Allen Toussaint	Louie "Louie" by "Allen Toussaint"	In 1970, Allen Toussaint put out his first CD, with a bunch of his best 60s hit singles plus this cool instrumental. The album was reissued on Kent as "What is Success: The Scepter & Bell Recordings"
Pinetop Perkins	3-Finger Boogie "3-Finger Boogie" by "Pinetop Perkins"	Recorded live at the old FMU studios in East Orange in 1993; it can be found on "Upsalapalooza"-- a bunch of tunes recorded live at the station
Art Tatum	How High the Moon "How High the Moon" by "Art Tatum"	Wow. This guy can play.
