As far as I know, Huw, there is no Welsh corner of Canada. I started self-teaching myself Welsh a few years back. Lovely language! (It's all due to my dedication to the great music of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci!)

  3:00am
Toronto Jim:

What's most charming about the Welsh language -- I learned subsequently -- is that they have no possessive verb akin to our "to have." Rather, they say that the possessed item is "with them." As in: "Mae'n nghar gyda fi" meaning "There is a car with me" -- i.e. "I have a car"!

huw From Wales:

Well I'm sure you're no more than 6ft away from a Welshman in Canada, we are like rats. Canada is THE place that the Welsh emigrate to.
  3:10am
Toronto Jim:

No offence to JimSally (whose acquaintance I made two weeks back via this forum, and who claimed -- tongue in cheek, mind you -- to be sleeping with my wife (of which there is none)), but all this time I had thought of him as an intellect. Turns out (on the radio, at least) that he sounds too too much like a mouth-breather.

Sarje:

Jim: Fair enough (hey, I am a feminist), but the way you said it was just really...surprising. So yeah, a married person who "was" one surname is not necessarily dead. :)

huw From Wales:

Sadly there aren't any mines left in Wales, I am down in Swansea. Another synchronicity is there is another Swansea in Canada

Toronto Jim:

Manny: Don't ever ask me WHY I retain this shit, but I can remember that the Hudson Brothers were named Mark, Marty and Brett, I think... My siblings and I watched their silly Crofft show, plus we had their LP (for the younger set, that was a 12-inch vinyl disk played via a "record player").

The answer to my last math problem was 666.
  3:36am
Toronto Jim:

Actually, Huw, there is a Swansea neighbourhood right here in Toronto! The political constituency there is still called "High Park-Swansea."

Alas, if you're from Swansea, you are a Jack c*nt, and I, as a dyed-in-the-wool Bluebirds fan, must smash you in the face with this pint-glass here!
  3:36am

Jim, I have the same long term memory, but i loose my keys as soon as I put them down
  3:38am
Toronto Jim:

Peace, actually, Huw... I was venting there (at Cardiff's SAD, SAD finish to last year's campaign!). No offence meant at all. (In fact, I'd rather drink with a Jack c*nt like you thatn a Wurzel from 'cross the Severn!)

(Honestly, though, both the Cardiff and Jack posters on the BBC 606 message board are gentlemanly and thoughtful -- a pleasure to read most days [unlike those tossers from Leeds!])

peetyL:

I know "it's" means "it is," but I've wanted to know: what's the possessive for "it"? Like "it's punctuation" or "it's hat"?
  4:23am
Brian Jude:

"Its" - no apostrophe
  4:23am
Toronto Jim:

The possessive of "it" is "its" -- no apostrophe! (It breaks the rule of other possessives, to avoid confusion with the "it is" contraction.)
  4:23am
spooky:

ok, guys, sleep time! Hugs all around.

Brian Jude:

Night, Spooks!
  4:25am
Sarje:

Night spooky! ((I'm back!))
  4:26am
peetyL:

Possessives are hard...hardly anyone in America knows how to use the apostrophe correctly (signs that have plurals written as possessives with the useless apostrophe drive me NUTS).
  4:26am
Rampler:

OK I did my sweeping.
  4:27am
Toronto Jim:

G'night now, Spooky.
---
WAIT! the "its" pronominal possessive actually DOES follow the rules for possessive PRONOUNS. [My, Your, His, Her, Its, Our, Your, Their].

peetyL, nice to see someone else is a grammar Nazi too. :)

Welcome back, Frank!

dale:

greetings from a wet uk! the only thing lacking on ustream is the guys from mystery science thearter sat in the corner.
  4:29am
Toronto Jim:

Further to PeetyL's comment above:

Right on, brother. The other, concomitant, thing that bugs me is the use of "straight up-and-down" quotation marks -- i.e. minute marks!) They are not apostrophes nor quote marks. Sheesh!
  4:30am
Rampler:

That's a good idea Dale!!! Get some robot silhouttes on the video
  4:32am
Sarje:

Bye Val! Thanks for the visit! Hey dale! Good one! I miss MST3K

peetyL - "Who's shirt is this?"
  4:32am
peetyL:

I'm not a grammar Nazi on most things, but the plurals-as-possessives thing is just unacceptable to me. Yeah, Toronto Jim, it's nice when the quotation marks have a little curve to them, huh?
  4:33am
peetyL:

Ugh, Sarje, NOOOOOOOOOOO! "Whose"! I know you know.
  4:35am
Joshua K:

I used to work at the harborside financial center.
  4:35am
Sarje:

peetyL: yes, meant as a joke. I also always cringe at the mistakes on "to, two, too," "their, there, they're," and "your, you're," et al.
  4:35am
Toronto Jim:

No one who learnt French as their first language would ever misplace an apostrophe, methinks. They are important for clear written communication, after all. Like they are meant to be in English as well. I may be wrong...
  4:36am
Brian Jude:

http://www.apostropheabuse.com/
  4:36am
Sarje:

Hey Joshua K!
  4:38am
Toronto Jim:

"There / their / they're" is the worst transgression of all. It makes clarity a haphazard thing. But it must be the most widespread (and growing) faux pas in written English today.
  4:38am
Sarje:

Toronto Jim: I think you're right, but I also think that we just don't emphasize a proper level of grammatical education early on in the U.S.
  4:39am
Brian Jude:

Sarje - We did when we had The Electric Company on TV!
  4:40am
Sarje:

TJ: I agree...it's absolutely awful. I see "your" instead of "you're" a lot too...and from smart people who KNOW BETTER....which means we really just have an epidemic of laziness.
  4:40am
Joshua K:

Whoah franks got a pepsi kona shirt. I used to drink that every morning my senior year of high school. That was a good drink I wish they still made.

  4:43am
peetyL:

"OOP'S! SALE" LOL
  4:44am
Sarje:

Brian: it's an easy excuse for that. We can and do often communicate clearly and completely on the internet, it's all a matter of choice.
  4:44am
dale:

hi sarje and fellow......what do we call ourselves? rampies?
  4:45am
Sarje:

dale: Not sure, I'm just me! I'm a friend of the Rampler, and that's the best I can say about it.

Hey everyone, CLEAN YOUR BOATS!
  4:46am
Joshua K:

rampwhores?
  4:46am
Toronto Jim:

It does make it worse, Brian, true. Any major language changes considerably through time and place, especially English, which is both welcoming of foreign terms, and enjoying an unprecedented hegemony over language on Earth.

We all have to bear with the fact that English is the "de rigueur" "lingua franca" that we all share in our collective "Weltanshauung."
  4:48am
Sarje:

Yeah! Muppets reference!
  4:49am
Brian Jude:

Ramplerites, Rampheads, Ramplermaniacs?
  4:49am

  4:51am

Toronto Jim:

Brian: U R NutZ. No xtra ltrs 4ever! LOL OMG LMFAOOTF KQBRUCFFXPWQYU!
  4:54am
Sarje:

Yeah Brian, I think it's meant to express excitement or interest, but not really sure.

Another thing that annoys me is the spelling "definAtely" instead of "definitely." No idea where that one came from.
  4:56am
Brian Jude:

Copied from an actual FB post: "OMGGG BRITTANY! i missssss uuuuu and hahahahahha woow i totaly forgott about that, omgg i miss those fun ass times we had. i misss u sooo muchhh we have to get together like asap! love youu girllllyyy"

Personal urns are a new and exciting way to memorialize your loved one.
Now we can create a custom urn in the image of your loved one or favorite Celebrity.
New advances in facial reconstruction and 3D printing have made it possible to have an urn made in the image of anyone from just a photograph.
  4:58am
Toronto Jim:

There's a rule (whose name I can't recall) that says: Anytime (as in a graffito, say) there is a spelling or grammar error, someone will add a correction, and the correction will ALWAYS have an error of its own!

(Like when guys on the internet accuse others of being illiterate, and they say things like "at least I can RITE a SENTANCE"... blah blah blah

  4:59am
Sarje:

Brian: actually, I think that's just laziness and...nope, that's it.

Sarje:

peetyL: I do love me some Sonic Youth...
  5:02am
peetyL:

Sorry old fogeys: I will continue to use "yr". Yet I hate when people use "ur" for "your" because it's just WRONG
  5:03am
peetyL:

"Yr" a Sonic Youth fan, too, Sarje? Ha ha, just kidding...
  5:04am
tramshed:

I tried to call, it didnt work, but thats cool, your show sounds delicious. Im baked,
  5:04am
Toronto Jim:

Truth is, Peety, that "yr" BOTH wrong.
  5:04am
Brian Jude:

"yr" is usually an abbreviation for "year."
  5:04am
Sarje:

LOL @ Brian's link...leave it to Wisconsonites....I'm in MN, so I have an allowance to make fun of their stupidity.
  5:05am
Toronto Jim:

Hey, someone else is baked here! I thought I was alone in that state, and that everybody else was just drunk.
  5:05am
peetyL:

No, Brian Jude, that's "yr." with a "."
  5:06am
Sarje:

peetyL: Yep, I am not a HUGE fan, but I like their sound a lot.
  5:07am
Sarje:

I've found that it's often impossible to interpret the words to songs (even in English) if the singer is really GOOD...just a weird thing about how I hear or the nature of singing I guess.
  5:21am
peetyL:

Sarje: I have that problem too. Always have. I'm glad when albums have liner notes with all the lyrics, and also how one can find lyrics to any song on the Internet: life savers!

Sorry Frank, I gotta get to sleep! Hope the show ends well. (Loved the song.)

Alan Hale Jr. (who played the Skipper) died in 1990, so it was probably dialogue from the show...

Toronto Jim:

I love the Gilligan episode where the Mosquitoes are stranded there. Bingo, Bango, Bongo, and Irving! They sang a couple great songs -- "He's a Loser" was superb! Plus, the "girls" of the island sang "You Need Me!" (Later covered by the Nip Drivers!)

There's a huge garden of tulips (not lilies) in Ottawa at parliament Hill. The bulbs are a yearly gift from the Netherlands, in honour of the Canadian Army's liberation of Holland in WW2, and for our sheltering of the Dutch Royal Family in exile then. Queen Beatrix's sister Margaret (or some such) was born in Ottawa while they were exiled -- the operating room was declared Dutch territory for a few hours so she could be fully "legitimate."
  5:44am
peetyL:

Do Music Man pinball next! "There's trouble...right here in River City...with a capital 'T,' that rhymes with 'P,' and that stands for pool."

Hey FEN, I noticed you mentioned Tolley-Brown during the first hour. I was in Holloway circa 1993 but I had friends in Tolley-Brown... did you have a show at the radio station in Tolley-Brown's basement? Was it WMNJ-FM ("10 watts of throbbing music power") or was it still WERD back then? WFMU's Stork was there around '79-'80ish (?) when it was WERD (carrier current AM).
  1:29pm
Rampler:

Yeah I had a show on WMNJ FM in the Tolley basement from 1986 to 1988.
