June 20, 2009: On the Corner
Kenny Wessel couldn't make it today but he is playing--along with "On the Corner" alumni Badal Roy & Michael Henderson-- at the River to River fest on Wednesday, July 8, at Rockefeller Park. A free outdoor concert, commemorating the amazing 1972 Miles Davis sessions.

Artist | Track | Album | Label | Comments | Approx. start time |
---|---|---|---|---|---|

Miles Davis | Thinkin' One Thing And Doin' Another | On the Corner | Legacy | The music just flows together; this tune and the one before are actually part of a longer "suite" of 20 minutes or so-- broken up to make the album more marketable. It's all one piece on the 6-CD box of the "On the Corner" sessions released on Legacy two years ago. | 0:10:30 (Pop-up) |
Miles Davis | Black Satin | On the Corner | Legacy | Some say this is the only "melodic" piece from the session; listen to Badal on tabla, opening and closing the song! | 0:12:51 (Pop-up) |

World Saxophone Quartet | Dou Dou N'Daiye Rose | Four Now | Justin Time | Four American sax players plus three African drummers collaborate on "Four Now" (Justin Time, 1996) | 0:46:50 (Pop-up) |
Victor Olaiya's All Stars Soul International | Let Yourself Go/There Was a Time | Highlife | Vampisoul | Listed as separate tracks, they are obviously a blend. Recorded in 1970, this amazing Highlife album was just issued on CD by Vampisoul | 0:55:30 (Pop-up) |
Fred Fisher Atalobhor and his Ogiza Dance Band | Kisiana | African Carnival | Vampisoul | Another Vampisoul CD of Nigerian music from the 70s: "African Carnival" | 1:02:43 (Pop-up) |

Ocote Soul Sounds & Adrian Quesada | Tres Ratas | Coconut Rock | ESL | When I was in Austin last summer, the buzz was strong for Grupo Fantasma; this CD is a collaboration between members of Grupo F and Antibalas: "Coconut Rock" (ESL, 2009) | 1:50:12 (Pop-up) |
Prez Prado | St. James Infirmary | Six All Time Greats (vinyl)/ Voodoo Suite (CD) | Bear Family | The scratchy vinyl album is called "Six All Time Greats" but the CD is more marketably called "Voodoo Suite" (Bear Family, 1990).
