Listener comments!

  9:09am Lawrence:

what is the bed music for SoS?
  9:11am crazed beggar:

hey Ken!
Have you thought about offering an Ogg Vorbis or AAC+ stream? You could save bandwidth (and money) since those audio codecs need less than 128kbit/s per listener while retaining the same "objective" audio quality.
  9:13am Martin in Sweden:

What's the latest on the archives? How's the format conversion going (out with Real Audio etc)? And will the outcome of the marathon affect this project?
  9:17am Freder:

Why did you start the JM in the AM drive early?
  9:18am ALF:

When you guys move across the street sometime this year, can people volunteer to make the move smooth as possible?
  9:21am robert1014:

In order to boost the pledge total, should I call in a pledge to the station even though I received a pre-marathon pledge mailing, or is it sufficient simply to mail in my contribution with the mailing document?
  9:24am ALF:

Do you guys have any samples online of what's on the Locked Groove LP that you get when making a pledge of $365 or more?
  9:34am Nicky andrews:

SHOUT OUT FOR TONY COULTER
  9:35am ?:

Is there anyway you can tell us the size of your broadcast and online audience? should you be going more in the webcasting direction ?
  9:38am Aaron:

So why do you keep pushing back the launch date of the free music archive?
  9:44am Ike:

Hey Crazed Beggar, the AAC+ stream (actually now 32k not 24k) sounds great, almost as good as 128k MP3. And Ken didn't mention the 40k OGG stream. Unfortunately WFMU removed the links from their front page at wfmu.org (IMHO this is a bad idea since they can help save $$$ on bandwidth if promoted and marked as "the Winamp/VLC streams" or something) but they are still available. Links are still at the top of every playlist, and elsewhere.

I love the State of the Station too.
  9:48am ronzer:

Hey Ken,
There is a Law of the Commons seminar in Seattle- 3/13/09- with info on current state of copyright law. Just google "Law of the Commons, Seattle University".

  9:48am Michael:

Although you don't get financial supporrt from "The Man", will WFMU accept corporate matching gifts from pledgers whose employers offer such programs?
  9:48am dale:

I AM lucky to live up by Mt. Hope Ken, 90.1 is consistently strong and clear (unless there's an ice storm).
  9:49am dale:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
  9:51am Mark from Moscow:

Am I right in thinking that if I listen to your 32k AAC stream instead of the 128k mp3 stream, that I'm saving bandwidth, and that therefore if you encouraged people to make that choice, it could free up a lot of bandwidth and save money (sounds pretty much as good to me, as pointed out by Ike above). What is the difference in quality, and the load on bandwidth?
  9:52am ume:

Ken,
If listening on the web is more expensive than FM, should I always put the program to sleep when I'm not listening? unlike leaving the radio on? because I've left the program streaming over the weekend at work before. Thanks.
  9:53am Ken From Hyde Park:

90.1 comes in pretty well here. That's what got me listening. I'd hate to see it go. (Pledge will be forthcoming.....promise. When credit card goes to the next month's billing cycle.)
  10:00am Jay:

lAm out of money this month as got robbed but as soon as next pay check comes in will send you money. Ican not let you go off air ever!!!!
Jay from London uk
  10:02am Ike:

Ume, I'm guessing that you should NOT leave the webstream going when you're not at work! Eats bandwidth!

Jay, you can choose the "bill me later" option.
  10:04am jay:

thanks ike good ideal
  10:08am Ike:

Oh and Jay I'm sorry to hear you got robbed -- that sucks and I know how it feels.

Mark, I don't know if FMU pays a flat fee in bandwidth or what. I am guessing they'd save money on bandwidth if they promoted the AAC+ more, but it's difficult given that most people use EVIL EVIL iTunes (I HATE MAC) which can't play it. Or Windows Media Player which can't play it without a plug-in.

THANKS KEN!
  1:30pm ZachInPhilly:

SECOND SHOUT OUT FOR TONY COULTER (MAN I WISH THERE WERE SOMETHING LOUDER THAN CAPS!)
  7:16pm Dan:
