Favoriting January 27, 2009: the soothing sounds of the rain, with THOMAS FUNCTION live!!
Trying to describe Thomas Function's music is like trying to describe the colors of a kaleidoscope. Flummoxed music writers tend to use genre descriptors like "garage," "blues," "psych," "bluegrass," "glam" and "country." They throw around band names like the Buzzcocks, Television, Violent Femmes and the Modern Lovers. Well, they're all right. Listen to this live set and it will make perfect sense. Plus, you'll understand why I named their Celebration CD my Best Of 2008.

Listener comments!

  11:08pm
Laurie:

The comic book shoppe I used to visit every Wednesday played nothing but the Buzzcocks pretty much, so I got pretty tired of them eventually. This song? It's hot! I like it!

PS: Got any spoilers for The Love of Ray J??????
  11:08pm
Jan Coztás:

This is a great song. I need to dig out the buzzcocks records again.
  11:09pm
cheri:

hiya evan---wuzzzzup this week??? i bet you wil watch the superbowl,,,rite??
  11:09pm
brock:

holy shit great song to start!
  11:13pm
cheri:

i can't wait to hear the band efd,,
  11:13pm
dw:

anyone at the Thomas Function shows this week in NYC?
  11:17pm
gregory:

I was at the other music in store friday night and I'm excited for the set tonight
  11:18pm
efd:

hi everyone! going a little crazy in the studio at the moment... you'd think a 7-minute opening song would give me time to catch my breath, but apparently not.
  11:19pm
john:

Take your time; we'll hang.
  11:21pm
dw:

Yea, i was there and the Cakeshop show.. really good stuff. Was tempted to go to the Mercury Lounge show too.
  11:21pm
Laurie:

I guess you could say... I was conditioned to NEVERM(IND THE BUZZCOCKS. http://tinyurl.com/2d3gev

Simon Amstell is my favorite British Simon.

Also!! Grifters! I was just listening to Full Blown Possession and Crappin' You Negative a couple of weeks ago.

And I like this Reivers song! I haven't really listened to them before and have something new (or old, I guess) to look into!
  11:21pm
efd:

well I know Cheri gets antsy when I don't answer right away...
  11:22pm
Laurie:

Sorry, I don't know why I typed an open parentheses in "NEVERMIND."
  11:24pm
cheri:

evan i sometimes do get antsy,, but not always,,,,=)
  11:24pm
Joe:

Whoa, is Bill Kelly filling in tonight?
  11:24pm
Laurie:

Possibly because it should really be "NEVER MIND."

Okay, I'll stop commenting!!
  11:27pm
efd:

Laurie, I think it was because the I is near the 9/( key.
  11:31pm
cheri:

btw evan i bet you'll be watching the superbowl, i'm i rite??
  11:33pm
john:

Thomas Function reminds me of a southern-fried James. Which is a compliment. And the Buckinghams were super cool, much more than just "Kind Of A Drag."
  11:35pm
E.L.:

Oh! Just in time.
  11:38pm
efd:

hi, E.L., John, Joe, and everyone!
Cheri, you are right - I will be watching the Superbowl.
  11:42pm
cheri:

it's a great set,, efd you're THE BEST dee jay on fmu!!!!!!!! i swear.
  11:43pm
Laurie:

Evan, for shame. You should be watching the PUPPY BOWL. (I hope they continue with the kitty cat halftime show tradition!)
  11:43pm
efd:

Laurie, who says I can't watch both??
  11:48pm
cheri:

efd--i asure you that THIS will be my ultimate final comment for the nite,,,but i'll still be listenin,g'nite
  11:49pm
efd:

OK, Cheri! thanks for the kind words, as always.
  11:52pm
Jan Coztás:

I like this Thomas Function concoction. I never heard of them before. Many thanks for putting this on the air!
  11:54pm
efd:

cool, glad you're enjoying it Jan!
  11:55pm
Laurie:

I think I'm sending too many tweets today!
  11:57pm
E.L.:

I wish I could be blasting this but there are sleeping individuals in the next room. Thomas Function sound particularly victorious after a long day.
  11:57pm
Jessica:

Woooo!
[hooray for Twittereminding. oof. still: it worked. @JessicaD. (Laurie?)}
  11:58pm
efd:

note to self: close the Studio B door before interviewing the band next time.
  12:00am
Laurie:

@LaurieFromMiami

Matt Fraction just @replied to me, and I gained FIVE followers. Well, one of them was Matt himself, but he's a KINGMAKER.
  12:02am
Joe:

That set was tasty as hell.
  12:14am
efd:

glad you enjoyed it, Joe!
  12:20am
Shjip:

So, how would you say my name?
  12:23am
efd:

I would say it rhymes with "potjato chjip"
  12:26am
Laurie:

I like this Wolfgang Press song for the most part, but I really hate that Happy Mondays melisma-y back up singer thing. I think Primal Scream also did it for an album in the early or mid-nineties as well?
  12:27am
H20:

jrip...jrip
  12:28am
Joe:

The "J" is silent. It's spanish.

Laurie I was thinking the same thing but I don't know what album it is, either.
  12:31am
efd:

I don't know if the "j" is really silent in Spanish... what about Tijuana?
On the other hand, I had to look up "melisma," so what do I know...
  12:32am
Laurie:

Love Colossal Yes, love Mr. Newman. As usual, you're playing all of the hits. (I'm using Michael Shelley's loosely-defined interpretation of "hits.")
  12:34am
Laurie:

And I should have used melismatic instead of melisma-y apparently. Go fig.
  12:37am
efd:

here's another hit, Laurie.
  12:37am
Laurie:

YESSSSSSSSS. I love the Pains. I call them the Pains. Because, you know, their band name is kind of a mouthful.

I'm commenting too much, as usual! My apologies, I'll shut up now and lay off the Diet Coke w/ lime (no vodka!)!!
  12:43am
Joe:

You gonna send this one out to yourself, Mr. Davies?
  12:44am
profstevesteve:

Hey it keeps the rest of us going, Laurie! BTW during B. Jam's show a couple back it really was a bright purple sky over Syracuse. The beauties of the wonderfully tainted Onondaga Lake we call our shores..!
  12:44am
The Log Lady:

Wow, I didn't know the Popguns covered 10,000 Maniacs--interesting!
  1:06am
efd:

ZOMG itz SNOWING!!!!1!! everybody run for your lives!!!
  1:09am
john:

Wolfgang Press, Thomas Function, El Goodo...it's a night for bands that sound like relatively improbable names of people. No snow yet in the Nutmeg State (TM).
  1:09am
poof:

gone.
  1:11am
Joe:

keeping my fingers crossed for an 8:30 class cancellation...

I might have to nickname someone "El Goodo" in the coming week... its too good not to use.
  1:12am
efd:

"mr. groovy" wouldn't be bad either.
I'll be rooting for that cancellation for you!
  1:13am
Laurie:

I'm assuming El Goodo got their name from "The Ballad of El Goodo," no?
  1:13am
efd:

poof: Goodnight, Mr. Chjips.
  1:19am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Laurie--is there any other El Goodo?
  1:20am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Sutherland Bros and Quiver are British I believe
I believe Pete Thomas of the Attractions was their drummer
  1:22am
john:

El Goodo are/is Welsh. Agreed on the name; original ideas a little thin on the ground there. Sutherland Bros etc were Brits but had at least one Canadian in the band.
  1:23am
Joe:

This is great because
A; It's really fun and
B. It probably pisses Mike Patton the hell off.
  1:24am
efd:

thanks Michael and John for the info. Mike Baird is the drummer credited on the LP I have, but I believe they had a couple of others at least.
  1:27am
john:

98% of what I know about them comes from, of all reasons, the fact that Tim Renwick played guitar on a bunch of Al Stewart records in the 70s.
  1:29am
efd:

this "Ganesh is Fresh" might be the best song ever (right at this moment, at least).
  1:29am
Joe:

Wow.
  1:29am
Joe:

Of the decade, maybe. It's 2009, after all.
  1:29am
Laurie:

Okay, I'm off to bed before I send any more tweets pouting about how two fellows I liked stopped following me. It's like I feel compelled to confirm their reasons for dropping me from their twitter feed!
  1:35am
efd:

aww.. goodnight, Laurie! you'll never be dropped from the playlist comments.
  1:36am
john:

Wow, i'd forgotten how unutterably brilliant this Jah Wobble record was, despite the whole Sinead O'Connor thing.
  1:40am
efd:

honestly I don't recall the rest of the CD at this point, but I had to bust it out when I heard the similar bassline in "Ganesh is Fresh" (!)
  1:40am
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--Mike Baird was the last drummer in Journey (when it was still Steve Perry fronting the band) when Randy Jackson was the bass player. Baird is/was a big session guy
  1:44am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Good Yogi reference there!
  1:45am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Ba da Cymbal crash!
  1:46am
efd:

two for the price of one!
  1:46am
john:

MC Yogi would like to thank you for making this day necessary. Hard to believe it's nearly two, it gets late early here.
  1:48am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Do you know where the FMU show will be at SXSW (do you have the venue name?)?
Will you be there?
  1:48am
Joe:

I just hope he's rocks with Dj BooBoo
  1:52am
efd:

nicely played, John and Joe.

Michael, the name's not handy - there was a note on that Obits single, but didn't mention the venue. I will not be in attendance, unfortunately.
  2:00am
john:

Thanks, couldn't let the week pass without a single baseball reference, so when I came to a fork in the road, I took it.
  2:12am
Joe:

Hilltop Nissan! FUCK! Too late...

Oh well, only the Jersey folks would've gotten it anyway...
  12:21pm
greg:

hey man, thanks for playing our single!
