January 5, 2009: Cowboys of the Hardwood
Extend the holidays. Some of this musict I found when Abbie (my home-from-college son) & I rebuilt our sound system and we sorted piles of CDs. Some I heard on XM Radio, flying back from Florida last week. A few were holiday gift CDs or flea market buys or hot tips from friends.
I'm particularly excited about my new four-CD box —“Progressions: 100 Years of Jazz Guitar” on Sony-Legacy—which begins with Vess Ossman doing “St. Louis Tickle” in 1906 and includes recent work from Bill Frissell and others, with much in between. The newest CD from Austin radio station KGSR includes live tunes from Carolyn Wonderland and others. I also got a neato BBKing box and lots more. And don’t forget our roundball set, with Garry Krinsky’s tribute to the Boston Celtics, Cheech & Chong’s “Basketball Jones” plus Brother Bones doing “Sweet Georgia Brown”
I’m on next week and I saved stuff from a nice Studio One reggae collection, my tribute to recently dead faves (Davy Graham, Nick Reynolds of Kingston Trio, Odetta), and esp.
